Abstract:
Compares the approach to German history in Israeli textbooks in the 1990s with the approach that prevailed earlier. The latter stressed Germany's "special path" and, in the wake of the Holocaust, portrayed German history as a linear, negative process that culminated in the Nazi rise to power. The new approach views German history in the context of pan-European developments. Nazism is not treated as a unique phenomenon but as an example of totalitarianism. Critics of the new textbooks charge that they are post-Zionist and undermine Zionist education. Concludes that the new textbooks tend toward universalization of historical processes, but still take moral stands. While positive aspects of German history are included, Nazi policy is unambiguously condemned, as in earlier textbooks. However, nationalist extremism and hatred of foreigners are depicted as universal dangers that threaten any country under similar crisis conditions.
