Abstract: Buber's concept of the »line of demarcation« has been criticized by a number of thinkers from the perspectives of philosophy and Kantian ethics. Ernst Simon, who wrote an extended essay on the topic, called it a »non-categorical« principle, while Hugo Bergman and Steven Schwarzschild explained it through Buber's dialogical philosophy, highlighting its failure to articulate clear ethical imperatives. Today Buber's line of demarcation is hardly noticeable in the scholarly literature, mainly because it seems to offer little practical value and concrete guidelines. Yet, as this essay argues, Buber's situational ethics and his line of demarcation were shaped by profound theological doctrines. It shows that the line of demarcation was inspired by the doctrine of the descent of the tzaddik in Hasidism and the doctrine of »descent for the sake of ascent« (yeridah letzorech aliyah). These doctrines allow us to view Buber's ethical vision again as a »non-categorical imperative,« which aligned with his political-theopolitical approach and his life-long engagement with hasidic thought.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to explore the potential tension that according to Walter Benjamin is at stake in the opposition between the bourgeois conception of language and an inquiry into the essence of language, taking into account important texts written in 1916, in order to shed light on language that moves in the direction of a dialogical situation premised on a tragic approach. More specifically, beginning with an outline of Benjamin’s notion of the relationship between language and action, with particular attention to his 1916 letter to Martin Buber and the role of language, it then goes on to discuss the structure of language in the 1916 essay on language, at the end of which Benjamin asserts that there is a “tragic relationship between the languages of human speakers”. Drawing on a posthumously published essay from 1916, entitled The Role of Language in Tragedy and Trauerspiel, it finally seeks to show how this tragic relationship is essential to a dialogical situation.

Abstract: Martin Buber (1878–1965) and Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy (1888–1973) were influential theologians and intellectuals known for their heterodox theologies and for their visions of a society based on dialogue. Both experienced migration. Buber emigrated during his teens from Vienna to Galicia, then, after his marriage, from Vienna to Germany, and finally from Germany to Palestine in 1938. Rosenstock-Huessy, a Christian theologian of Jewish origin, fled Germany in the wake of the Nazi rise to power in 1933. Independently and in different contexts, these thinkers employed their theologies in the 1930s and 1940s, advocating for immigration against the prevailing ideas of nativism and developing an (embryonic) theory and praxis of dialogic integration. Both sought to replace the popular totalistic and intolerant melting-pot ideology. This essay explores Buber’s and Rosenstock-Huessy’s approaches to immigration and its reception, the influence of their immigration experiences, and the relation to their approaches to other aspects of their thought. It explores the nativist theological approaches they opposed and the anti-nativism that might have inspired them. Finally, this essay examines the novelty of their approaches; while their theological advocacy of immigration was unique only in their times, their dialogical approach to integration stands out, even with regard to the contemporary multicultural approach, due to its theological edge.

Abstract: According to the traditional perspective, the early Christians refused to continue with the temple sacrifice. Christ on the cross had already atoned for all sins. Recently, other scholars, especially those belonging to the Radical New Perspective on Paul (or “Paul within Judaism” research), have argued instead that Paul carried on with temple worship, considered it efficacious, and expected Christ-following Jews to continue with the sacrifice. In this research we will investigate the positions of the different perspectives on Paul’s attitude toward Jewish sacrifices and evaluate the arguments at stake. Our research leads us to the conclusion that Paul did not consider the temple sacrifices a problem, but neither did he give them any salvific relevance for the recipients of his letters.

Abstract: In Christian tradition, Paul is the apostle to the nations. However, his portrayal in the Book of Acts is more nuanced. For a longer period, Paul's ministry is limited to Jews. Only from Acts 13 onwards does Paul slowly emerge as ministering to non-Jews. Yet even then, Paul remains foremost an emissary to diaspora Judaism. In its apology for Paul and his disputed way of including non-Jews into the people of God, Acts emphasises that Paul did so without diminishing the priority of Israel, as a staunch proponent of Jewish monotheism and in a way that took full account of the precarious situation of diaspora Judaism.

Abstract: Scholars generally agree that Moses and Elijah appear at the Transfiguration because they are connected to each other in some way, and that this connection informs the significance of the story as a whole. However, there is no consensus regarding how Moses and Elijah are related, and consequently there is significant disagreement about how their presence contributes to the Transfiguration. The present study, which focuses on Mark's account (Mark 9.2–8), argues that Moses and Elijah appear together because they received similar theophanies at Mount Sinai and, as a result, the Transfiguration should be read as a mountaintop theophany in which Jesus constitutes the personal presence of Israel's God.

Abstract: Interpreters unanimously read ἐνευλογηθήσονται in Gen 12:3b LXX as a passive. Good evidence, however, exists to challenge and problematize this conclusion. Recent linguistic studies on the ancient Greek middle voice reveal that aorist and future -θη- forms express a semantically middle domain. When we reexamine the word ἐνευλογέομαι within this light, a better option emerges for seeing its -θη- forms as manifestations of speech actions within this middle domain. In their own unique ways, the LXX as well as Philo, Paul, and Acts further corroborate this alternative. As a result, we may read ἐνευλογηθήσονται in Gen 12:3b LXX as a speech action middle: “to pronounce blessings.” The proposed reading promotes a better understanding of Abraham within Genesis LXX. Rather than a means to an end, Abraham remains at the center of God’s blessing as the earth’s families cry out: “God make me like Abraham!”

Abstract: This essay explores the fraught relationship between Martin Buber and Christian thought by critically analyzing and historically contextualizing his Two Types of Faith (1950). In this work Buber applies the distinction he puts forth between faith as relational trust (“faith in”) and faith as intellectual ascent to propositional truth (“faith that”) onto the early Israelite and Christian communities of faith. He also uses this distinction to criticize contemporary Protestant theology for continuing the Pauline notion of “faith that” rather than Jesus’s Jewish “faith in.” By examining the notion of faith developed by three central German Protestant theologians, Albrecht Ritschl, Wilhelm Herrmann, and Emil Brunner, this essay demonstrates that Buber’s claim cannot be squared with the main line of Protestant theology from 1870 onward to Buber’s own time and that the entire discussion in Two Types of Faith can be understood as situated within the Protestant discourse he was admonishing.

Abstract: What Paul has to say in Rom 8:19–22 about the subjection of ἡ κτίσις to futility, its bondage to corruption, and its groaning in pain is usually read as a statement about the general condition of creation, ruined by the sin of Adam as indicated in Rom 5:12, which, along with believers in Jesus, yearns for final restoration. The argument put forward here will be that the conceptual frame for the passage is furnished not by the story of the fall but by the more focused and characteristically Hellenistic-Jewish polemic against “Greek” idolatry developed in Rom 1:19–23. What troubles Paul as a pious Jew in the Mediterranean world is the subjection of the material of creation—wood, stone, gold, silver—to futile religious practices that result in the corruption of life. The whole of creation groans in solidarity with the abused “creature,” but in the “present time” there is also a groaning community that bears confident witness to the approaching end of the impious pagan order.

Abstract: This article examines the adult education program operated by the Hebrew University since 1940. The article depicts Abraham Halevi Fraenkel at its center. Fraenkel’s name as the founder of adult education at the Hebrew University has been almost completely forgotten. I want to return Fraenkel to center stage, and to attempt to connect his activities in Palestine/The Land of Israel to the ideas he brought with him from Germany in the field of adult education. These ideas can be seen as part of his religious and political convictions. Alongside Fraenkel in the leadership of adult education was Martin Buber, who worked from the 1940s to promote adult education at the Hebrew University. Buber’s endeavors in Germany in the field of adult education have been more extensively described in the literature than his role in this field in Israel. New archival material has made it possible to shed additional light both on Fraenkel’s character and on Buber’s undertakings in the 1940s on behalf of adult education in the Yishuv. A comparison between the two personalities reveals some insight into the establishment of adult education from an overall perspective.

Abstract: In this article, I will examine how liturgical poets creatively reworked biblical quotations and allusions in service of their own poetic and liturgical ambitions through analysis of a late antique composition attributed to Eleazar Haqallir (Qallir) (late sixth/early seventh century), “What Man Lives and Does not See Death?” This poem, which takes its opening line from Psalm 89:49, was composed for an occasion when the Torah reading began with Deuteronomy 33:1, Moses’s poetic blessing of the Israelites before his death. Qallir’s composition transforms the biblical episode into a miniature, multivoiced drama, one that draws on an extensive body of postbiblical exegetical tradition. First, it depicts Moses’s vigorous arguments with God and various heavenly intercessors as he seeks to avert his fate; upon conceding that he cannot escape mortality, it describes how Moses is mourned by not only the Israelites but all creation. The final portion of the piyyut transitions from a depiction of funerary ritual (in the biblical past) to the recitation of the Qedushah (in the liturgical present). With its complex, multivocal narrative, this composition illustrates how liturgical poets reworked biblical poetry—in this case, Deuteronomy 32–33 and Psalm 90—by reading it through the lens of postbiblical narrative traditions while also leveraging the performative-ritual context in which the poems were experienced. This poem’s reuse of traditional material reflects the aesthetic conventions of the poetic craft and performative practices of dramatic delivery in late antiquity.

Abstract: In a polemic against Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig of 1926, Siegfried Kracauer (1889–1966) insisted that truth had come to reside in the spheres of the profane. The following article explains the theology of history underlying Kracauer’s postulate and traces its literary, political and philosophical variants in his texts and his correspondences. Prima facie, his single-minded focus on the profane seems to point to a form of negative theology. Relying on vague references to the Jewish prohibition of the image, Kracauer implies that the absolute may be identified only by critiquing profane reality. This claim notwithstanding, Kracauer repeatedly points to positive motifs too. His notion of Jewishness as the particularist embodiment of a universal form of reason and his references to hedonistic and aesthetic experiences that embody the Messianic are cases in point. While the latter tended ultimately to reflect Buber’s concept of Hasidism, Kracauer explicated this approach in his treatment of (actually or supposedly) Jewish artists such as Franz Kafka, Jacques Offenbach and Charlie Chaplin. Kracauer’s canonization of these figures as nonconformists bears a notable resemblance to Isaac Deutscher’s concept of the “non-Jewish Jew” and Hannah Arendt’s notion of the “Jew as pariah”.

Abstract: This paper investigates Buber’s understanding of the relationship between the Jewish people and the Promised Land as it emerges from his biblical commentaries of the 1940s. It argues that Buber’s exegetical writings from the period should be read as an extension of his political pronouncements on Zionism, complementing his binational vision of Arab-Jewish coexistence in Palestine. Focusing on Buber’s 1944 lectures published under the title Bein Am Le’Artzo, I show how Buber questions the indigenous identification between the people and Land of Israel. Drawing on Amnon Raz-Krakotzkin’s theoretical concept of “exile within sovereignty,” I read Buber’s commentaries on the commandments of shmita and bikurim as an attempt to integrate the memory of exile within his vision of Zionism. The biblical resonance he attributes to the Jews’ resettlement in Palestine thus forms a pointed polemic against the ideal of Jewish nativism. In contrast to those who used the Bible in order to mythologize the Jews’ autochthonous relationship to the land of origins, Buber’s commentaries stress the diasporic consciousness preserved in the scriptures themselves.

Abstract: In a brief passage from the third part of Ich und Du, Buber expounds his conception of idolatry as an objectifying disposition that contradicts the relational nature of an authentic religious act. I will show that the main categories of Buber's thought – that is, the Grundworte ‘ich-du’ and ‘ich-es’ – provide the theoretical coordinates through which Buber understands the antithesis between authentic religion and idolatry as one between relationality and its opposite.

Abstract: The texts of the Talmud exposed in this study show a complex thinking where Israel is a people that has literally elected itself. It is no longer the biblical God who elects as He pleases but the chosen people who elect their God. Paul recognizes the election of the Jewish people, however the believing pagans also enter the covenant. The idea of substituting one people for another is attested by Justin who, while relying on Paul (notably Ga 4:21-31), extrapolates the concept of election by radicalizing it. The approach chosen is not only historical, in the sense that its purpose is not so much the search for the fact as for the meaning of the ideas and contradictions present within the religious traditions.

Abstract: This essay explores the relationship between Buber's philosophy of history and his political theory, known also as theopolitics. Buber's first book on theopolitics, Kingship of God (1932), implemented the principle of dialogue as a critique of leadership. Dialogue reconciles the paradox of authoritarian theocracy and absolute freedom of anarchy: it unites the interhuman relationship (religious anarchy) and the divine-human relationship (direct theocracy). Without dialogue, anarchy would become chaotic and theocracy would actually mean the tyranny of the priests (hierocracy). But Buber's theopolitics also revealed a particular understanding of history. As this essay demonstrates, Buber held a notion of dialogical history (contrary to Hegelian dialectic history), which ultimately functioned as a critique of the history of victory and power. Dialogical history criticizes not only secular but also any kind of religious or sacred history claiming to authorize human power by divine justification. Dialogical history, therefore, should be seen as "counter-history," not only because it is based on a rehabilitation of myth (Hasidic tales and biblical myths) but also because it is engaged in an alternate philosophy of history, whose fulfillment is vouchsafed neither by the necessary unfolding of a spirit, nor by "great" historical deeds, but by everyday human agency and responsibility alone.

Abstract: To affirm that Paul was a Jew did not emerge with the Paul within Judaism perspective, but only in recent decades have scholars begun not to evaluate this negatively over against Christianity. When the label »Paul within Judaism« appeared on the scene of scholarly research, it assembled under its umbrella a number of scholars who had argued over a significant period of time and from diverse angles that not only Paul himself but also his message should be seen as fully part of the range of Jewish traditions of the time. This has implications for all aspects of Pauline theologizing, including the key aspects of the assessment of time as messianic time, the role of scripture for ethnē in Christ, and God's faithfulness to his people Israel.

Abstract: In the section of On the Life of Moses that deals with Moses as lawgiver, Philo praises the Torah as the most excellent legislation ever written and emphasizes its universal popularity among Greeks and barbarians alike. This article contends that these two claims are to a great extent novel compared to previous Jewish discourses about the Law. Earlier Jewish authors writing in Greek celebrated the Torah's superior wisdom but did not compare it to other legal systems. Moreover, previous Jewish reflections on the Law's universality emphasized its accordance with the law of nature, while Mos. 2.12–24 introduces a new notion: the universal adoption of some of the Mosaic precepts by non-Jews. This paper argues that Philo's innovative statements in On the Life of Moses, which have parallels in Josephus' Against Apion, are to be understood in the framework of contemporary perceptions of and discourses on Roman law and jurisdiction.

Abstract: Philo focused on human characters in his writings as a means of illustrating the cultivation of virtue. The greatest figure for Philo was Moses. In his De vita Moysis, he signalled the structure with prefaces, summaries and transitional statements to highlight the unique character of Moses. A careful reading of these statements suggests that there was a gap of time between the composition of Mos. 1 and 2. Philo appears to have changed his plan as he neared the completion of book 1 and eventually decided to present Moses under multiple titles, a plan that he did not work out until he began book 2. His final decision to present him as a king, legislator, high priest and prophet is unparalleled in Jewish sources and makes Moses a human sui generis.

Abstract: The Munâjât Mûsâ or ‘the Intimate Conversations of God with Moses on Mount Sinai’ is a Moses apokryphon, probably originally written in Arabic, that describes how God gave Moses a series of moral injunctions and rituals and how Moses questioned God about His being and His power. The exchange between the two also features cosmogonic and soteriological themes and culminates in God’s promise of a fuller and final revelation in the future. In the Christian version God announces the Divine incarnation, while in the case of the Islamic Munâjât Mûsâ, God gives a preview of the advent of Muhammad. Judging from the vast amount of surviving manuscripts from all over the Islamicate world (including translations into Aljamiado, Swahili, Hausa, Persian and Malay), these versions must have been very popular. Eastern Christians also had versions in Syriac, Ethiopic and Armenian, while Ethiopian Jews reworked it into a Jewish text. In this paper I introduce the various versions, list their manuscripts, and analyze and compare some of the narrative strategies through which they appropriate Moses and the revelation on Sinai as known the Hebrew Bible. I also argue that there are elements in the apocryphon pointing to an Islamic origin.

Abstract: It has become commonplace among scholars to map Martin Buber’s concepts of “I-It” and “I-Thou” onto Kant’s phenomenon and noumenon, respectively. However, this has resulted in significant misconceptions about Buber’s phenomenology of dialogue. In fact, his philosophy was decidedly post-Kantian in the dual sense of being both under the influence of Kant and in opposition to him, and attention to themes of embodiment (Leiblichkeit) in Buber’s writings helps to disentangle these aspects. Through close philological readings, this paper demonstrates how Buber sought to circumvent the transcendental boundary between appearance and being, appropriated Kant’s language of “intuition” to describe a sensory encounter with the presence of a thing in itself, and affirmed that while being is not apprehended in terms of space and time, it is nonetheless spatial and temporal. Ultimately, these investigations elucidate what I term Buber’s dialogical monism, which in some ways anticipated insights of new materialism.

Abstract: Although the Temple Scroll is set on Mount Sinai, the place where Moses received God's revelation of the Torah, remarkably enough Moses is silent throughout the Temple Scroll. Instead, the entire revelation of the Torah, including the book of Deuteronomy, comes directly from God speaking in the first person to a silent Moses. The question is why did the composer/redactor of the Temple Scroll choose this pseudepigraphical strategy for his composition. The answer lies in the composer/redactor's desire to remove the revelation of Deuteronomy from the mouth of Moses on the plains of Moab and retroject it back into the of mouth God on Mount Sinai. Thus there is only one revelation of the entire Torah on Sinai, of which Moses is only the mediator.

Abstract: The book of Deuteronomy develops a remarkable interplay between the oral and the written, the ritual and the textual. Already in the earliest reception of the book, the inner-biblical reference to the discovery of the »book of the law« by Josiah in 2 Kgs 22, we find a similar interplay between a written text and the public performance of reading. In the Exagoge of Ezekiel Tragicus, this idea is taken to its fullest articulation, and the story of the Exodus, seen through the lens of Deuteronomy, is performatively enacted on the stage. Though Deuteronomy was itself an important step in the advent of »book religion« and the increasing importance of textual authority, the biblical book and the textual responses it inspired continued to detextualize the written word, even as they textualized religious authority in the first place.

Abstract: The dominant interpretation of Acts 3:22 and 7:37 understands Deut 18:15, 18–19 to be applied to Jesus so as to identify him as an anticipated, individual “prophet like Moses.” Interpreting these verses instead as understanding Deut 18 as a general reference to prophets, however, provides a smoother reading that aligns with the Lukan theme of the prophetic anticipation of Jesus as the messiah. Other literature does not provide decisive support that Deut 18 would be interpreted as prophesying an individual. Jesus is not the prophet like Moses, but rather the one of whom Moses and the prophets spoke.

Abstract: This article discusses a few elements of the epistle to the Galatians and keeps two things in mind in its interpretation : the fact that Paul presents himself as apostle to the nations, and the position of the Galatians inside the Roman empire. It also includes an analysis of the relationships between Jews and non-Jews in Antiquity in order to better understand why the Galatians’ position, severely criticized by Paul, could actually make sense in the context of these communities.

Abstract: What happens if we think of "Jewish law" not as a category of Christian theology but as an element of ancient kinship construction, "ancestral custom" (Gal 1:14)? We will see more clearly how much late Second Temple Judaism shared with contemporary Mediterranean cultures. We will see how ancient ethnic essentialism—the conviction that different peoples evinced different behaviors because of their very "nature" (φύσις)—shapes Paul's thought about gentiles no less than it shaped Greek thought about Persians, or Roman thought about Greeks. We will see how Jewish law provided not the contrast to Paul's gospel but in fact much of its content. We will see that there is no reason to assume that Paul stopped living Jewishly (Ἰουδαϊκῶς) just because he wanted gentiles to stop living "paganly" (ἐθνικῶς). We will let Paul reside coherently in a world radically different from our own—the ethnically essentialist, behaviorally variegated, god-congested world of first-century Jewishness.

Abstract: Paul's reference to his adaptability to different groups in 1 Cor 9.19–23 is central to recent discussions about Paul's Jewishness. This paper argues that the crucial context for Paul's metaphor of self-enslavement (1 Cor 9.19) is not to be found in anthropological passages such as Rom 6 or Gal 5, but rather in the conditions of a slave's life in antiquity. This leads to an interpretation that combines essential concerns of a Paul within Judaism perspective with those of more traditional exegesis.

Abstract: Paul’s Jewishness has often acted as a pivot in scholarship about the relationship between Christianity and Judaism, especially in recent conversation about the date and duration of the so-called “Parting of the Ways.” Too little attention has been paid, however, to who represented Paul as Jewish (or not) and why. I examine the late antique reception of Paul’s ethnic identity in Epiphanius of Cyprus, heresiologist, bishop, and someone for whom representation of Jewishness often served as a foil for the manufacture of orthodoxy. I argue that for Epiphanius, when Paul’s ethnic identity is relevant at all, the focus falls on an Israelite, Benjaminite Paul. Paul’s Jewishness becomes peripheral. Building on this observation, I suggest that we must understand even the reification of Jewishness familiar to current scholarship as only one of the late antique Christian behaviors that governed identification as Israelite.

Abstract: This paper corrects a pervasive mistake in readings of Buber’s iconic trope, “I-Thou” (Ich-Du; hereafter, I-You). The mistake lies in considering it synonymous to the principal concept of his dialogical thought, “relation” (Beziehung). A detailed reading of relevant passages in Buber’s I and Thou (hereafter, IAT) reveals their difference: While both “relation” and “I-You” refer to the same reality—to the dialogic moment—they do so with a different focus and scope: “Relation” refers to the dialogic moment in its bilateral entirety. However, “primary word I-You” (hereafter, PWIY)—the phrase in which the I-You trope in fact appears in IAT—focuses on the active share of only one of the two interlocutors in the dialogic moment. While PWIY does refer to the dialogical moment (which is indeed bilateral), it denotes only a partial aspect of the dialogical moment. It focuses exclusively on my active turning toward you and defocuses your concurrent turning toward me (which, no doubt, is present as well). This mistake, I show, is due to interpreters’ enthusiastic endorsement of Buber’s later phrase, the “I-You relation,” which is indeed synonymous with “relation.” It is then easy to read back the “I-You relation” into the earlier, more focused concept of PWIY. Furthermore, this enthusiasm has blinded readers from realizing that, following IAT, Buber in fact abandoned the I-You trope and used it only reluctantly, mainly when addressing his interpreters who used it themselves, or when discussing IAT where it indeed appeared.

Abstract: The consensus of New Testament scholars that the appellation Χριστός in Paul’s letters isa personal name and devoid of messianic convictions is increasingly questioned. Movingbeyond philological, tradition-historical, exegetical, and common-sense arguments, thefollowing can be demonstrated. When we treat Paul as a real person who read and studiedthe Hebrew Scriptures, who proclaimed the gospel in both Greek and Aramaic, using someHebrew in the synagogues, who taught in local congregations in both Greek and Aramaic,who maintained contact with the Aramaic-speaking Jesus followers in Jerusalem throughouthis ministry, and who sang and prayed in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, the assumption that,for Paul, Χριστός always stood for ַיחִ שָׁ מַּ ה/אָ יחִ שְׁ מ, the Messiah of God and the Messiah ofGod’s people, is highly plausible.

Abstract: The meaning of the enigmatic verse of Acts 15:21, not to mention the issues around the preceding Apostolic Decree (vv. 19–20), has largely been researched individually and historical-critically. By contrast, in this study I explicate the meaning of the verse within the broader scope of James’s speech by attending to the Jewish spatiality on Luke’s narrative-ideological plane. The Lukan James’s speech tightly combines intertextual elements that bear on significant Jewish spatiality, namely, the restored tent of David (v. 16) within the quotation of Amos 9:11–12, the alluded-to holy land (v. 20) drawn from Lev 17–18 as the background of the decree, and the Jewish synagogues in every city (v. 21) as the background of James’s final invocation of Moses. From this perspective, I propose that v. 21 is part of the Lukan narrative-ideological portrait that reconfigures the holy land’s purity concern via the eschatological presence of the restored Davidic tent, making it relevant to the larger Greco-Roman world in accordance with the continuing monotheistic cultic sanctity.
