Kurzfassung:
Compares the attitude of the German and Austrian literary world towards the Nazi period. Examines the reaction towards Jewish writers such as Ilse Aichinger and Paul Celan, who tried to communicate their Holocaust experiences. Notes the continued persistence of antisemitism in German-speaking intellectual circles. The Jewish aspects of Aichinger's and Celan's work were ignored or minimized. As a result, they suffered a crisis of language and became increasingly hermetic. Exiled writers, such as Elias Canetti and Manes Sperber, also found difficulty in using the German language. By the 1970s, however, despite public unwillingness to face the issues of the past, Austrian Jewish writers were able to describe their experiences openly. Includes a list of short biographies of Austrian Jewish writers (pp. 217-220).
