Abstract:
Discusses the forced conversion to Islam of the Jews of Meshed, Iran, in 1839, following a blood libel whose consequences were rioting, vandalism, and murder. The Jews were given an ultimatum of conversion or death by the fanatical Shi'ites; they chose the former. The majority of the Conversos, known as Jedid-al-Islam ("New Muslims"), led dual lives, observing Islam in public and Judaism in secret despite the dangers it posed. Describes their methods of observing Jewish traditions secretly. Their situation improved after Reza Shah Pahlevi granted religious freedom in Iran in 1925.
