    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: Sefaria is building the future of Jewish learning in an open and participatory way. We are building a free living library of Jewish texts and their interconnections, in Hebrew and in translation. Our scope is Torah in the broadest sense, from Tanakh to Talmud to Zohar to modern texts and all the volumes of commentary in between. Sefaria is created, edited, and annotated by an open community. Having digital texts enables us to create new, interactive interfaces for the Web, tablet and mobile which allow students and scholars around the world to freely learn and explore the interconnections among Torah texts. Judaism's core texts grew out of millennia-long conversations and arguments across generations. We envision creating an open space for ancient conversations to continue in new ways, with new participants, new questions, and new layers of dialogue

    Abstract: Hansestädtische Handelsfirmen profitierten von der Beteiligung an der deutschen Besatzung Polens während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Zahlreiche Hamburger und Bremer Überseehandelsfirmen engagierten sich in der Besatzungswirtschaft des Generalgouvernements. Sie beteiligten sich zum einen an der brutalen Ausbeutung der polnischen Landwirtschaft. Zum anderen trugen sie dazu bei, die polnischen Jüdinnen und Juden auszurauben und wirtschaftlich zu verdrängen - ein wichtiger Schritt auf dem Weg zum Genozid. Die Kaufleute erhielten nicht nur einen Teil des Raubguts. Sie füllten auch die volkswirtschaftliche Lücke aus, die durch die Vernichtung der jüdischen Gemeinden entstand. Viele waren bis 1939 im Kolonialhandel tätig gewesen und rechtfertigten ihr Tun in Polen mit kolonialistischen und antisemitischen Deutungsmustern. Das für die hansestädtischen Unternehmen sehr profitable Geschäft bildete ein wesentliches Element der verbrecherischen deutschen Besatzung in Polen. Eine zentrale Rolle spielten dabei die Handelskammern Hamburgs und Bremens, die den »Osteinsatz« ihrer Kaufleute mit vorantrieben. Felix Matheis beleuchtet die bislang kaum bekannte Geschichte der lukrativen Zusammenarbeit zwischen hanseatischen Wirtschaftseliten und nationalsozialistischen Besatzungsbehörden.

    Abstract: "In this volume, Joshua Paul Smith challenges the long-held assumption that Luke and Acts were written by a gentile, arguing instead that the author of these texts was educated and enculturated within a Second-Temple Jewish context. Advancing from a consciously interdisciplinary perspective, Smith considers the question of Lukan authorship from multiple fronts, including reception history and social memory theory, literary criticism, and the emerging discipline of cognitive sociolinguistics.     Abstract: This volume focuses on the major issues and debates in the study of Jews and Judaism in late antiquity (3rd to 7th c. C.E.), providing cutting-edge surveys of the state of scholarship, main topics and research questions, methodological approaches, and avenues for future research. Based on both Jewish and non-Jewish, literary and material sources, this volume takes an interdisciplinary approach involving historians of ancient Judaism, scholars of rabbinic literature, archaeologists, epigraphers, art historians, and Byzantinists. Developments within Jewish society and culture are viewed within the respective regional, political, cultural, and socio-economic contexts in which they took place. Special focus is given to the impact of the Christianization of the Roman Empire on Jews, from administrative, legal, social, and cultural points of view. The contributors examine how the confrontation with Christianity changed Jewish practices, perceptions and organizational structures, such as, for example, the emergence of local Jewish communities around synagogues as central religious spaces.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Dissertationsschrift beschäftigt sich mit Leben und Werk des deutsch-jüdischen Nervenarztes und Psychotherapeuten Ernst Jolowicz. Dieser wurde, trotz seiner regen wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit - unter anderem in Leipzig, bisher kaum von der medizinhistorischen Forschung berücksichtigt. Erstmalig rekonstruiert nun diese Arbeit die Biografie des Arztes vollständig und ordnet seine zahlreichen Publikationen unter anderem vor dem Hintergrund der Entwicklung der Psychotherapie und der Diskussion über traumatische Erkrankungen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Jolowicz‘ Schriften erschienen in einem historisch äußerst bewegten Zeitraum: Sowohl in den letzten Jahren des Kaiserreichs als auch während der Weimarer Republik und dem beginnenden Dritten Reich veröffentlichte der Mediziner umfangreich und setzte sich sowohl für die Etablierung der Psychotherapie als ärztliche Disziplin als auch für ein patientenorientiertes, methodenübergreifendes Herangehen ein. Nach Adolf Hitlers Machtergreifung emigrierte Jolowicz zunächst nach Frankreich und später in die USA, wo er erneut wissenschaftlich arbeitete. Anhand dieser aufgespürten Facetten soll eine angesichts der wechselvollen deutschen Geschichte im erheblichen Maße beeinflusste Wissenschaftlerbiografie exemplarisch begreifbar gemacht werden. Ein besonderer Fokus wird weiterhin auf Jolowicz‘ Tätigkeit als Frontarzt während des Ersten Weltkrieges gelegt. Seine Erfahrungen, welche er an den Schützengräben der Westfront und als ärztlicher Leiter eines Posener Militärkrankenhauses gemacht hatte, schlugen sich in diversen Aufsätzen nieder. Durch die Auseinandersetzung mit diesen versucht die Dissertation zeittypische psychotherapeutische Entwicklungen während des Krieges offenzulegen und erörtert die Originalität inhaltlicher sowie methodologischer Ansätze Jolowicz‘.

    Abstract: Das Ezechielbuch verarbeitet die Katastrophe des Babylonischen Exils auf einzigartige Weise: Es zieht Symbolik von Übergangsriten (rites de passage) heran, um das Exil als notwendige Phase eines Prozesses darzustellen, der Israel und die Lesenden verändert. Über das ganze Ezechielbuch hinweg werden Räume und Bewegungen beschrieben. Sie lassen sich analog zu Symbolen in Übergangsritualen verstehen, wie sie von A. van Gennep und V. W. Turner beschrieben wurden. Israel hatte sich von JHWH entfernt. Um wieder in einen Status als Gottesvolk geführt werden zu können, muss ein dreistufiger Prozess durchlaufen werden, der die räumliche Entfernung aus Jerusalem und die Rückkehr beinhaltet. Die mittlere, liminale Phase, in der allein Israel erneuert werden kann, entspricht dem Exil. Beim Lesen des Ezechielbuches kann der Prozess performativ mitvollzogen werden, so dass auch die Lesenden transformiert werden. Die Untersuchung verbindet alttestamentliche Wissenschaft mit Raum- und Ritualtheorien.

    Abstract: The Hellenistic period was a pivotal moment in the history of the Jewish priesthood. The waning days of the Persian empire coincided with the continued ascendance of the high priest and Jerusalem temple as powerful political, cultural, and religious institutions in Judea. The Aramaic Scrolls from Qumran, only recently published in full, testify to the existence of a flourishing but previously unknown Jewish literary tradition dating from the end of Persian rule to the rise of the Hasmoneans.     Abstract: Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, began his intellectual life with the Jewish Bible and also ended it with it. He began by reading the Philippson Bible together, especially with his father Jacob Freud, and ended by studying the figure of Moses. This study systematically traces this preoccupation and shows that the Jewish Bible was a constant reference for Freud and determined his Jewish identity. This is shown by analysing family documents, religious instruction and references to the Bible in Freud's writings and correspondence.

    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert war geprägt von Völkermorden. Die literarische Auseinandersetzung im deutschsprachigen Raum beschränkte sich dabei lange Zeit auf den nationalsozialistischen Judenmord. Anknüpfend an Ansätze der vergleichenden Genozidforschung und der literarischen Aufarbeitung der Shoah zeigt Gerald Manstetten, dass mittlerweile auch andere Genozide in den literarischen Fokus genommen werden. Am Beispiel von neun deutschsprachigen Werken weist er diese Entwicklung ebenso nach wie den noch immer starken Einfluss der Shoah auf das Schreiben über Genozide in deutscher Sprache.

    Abstract: Die Gesetzesthematik ist im hebräischen Esterbuch omnipräsent. Einerseits erzählt es von einem Königreich, in dem es für fast alles ein Gesetz gibt. Andererseits wird die Ausrottung von Esters und Mordechais Volk damit begründet, dass es anderen als den königlichen Gesetzen folge. Trotz dieses Befundes fehlt eine umfassende Untersuchung zu Bedeutung und Funktion des Themas. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt sich dieser Aufgabe an. Unter Berücksichtigung von Motivkonstellationen und intertextuellen Bezügen bietet sie eine ausführliche Analyse dieser Erzählfassung, die Gott bekanntlich unerwähnt lässt. Die Analyse erlaubt den Schluss, dass insbesondere der Motivkomplex "König als Ordnungsinstanz" eine theologische Dimension einspielt, denn im Spiegel irdisch-königlicher Rechtsverdrehung gewinnen der wahre Gottkönig JHWH und seine Tora an Kontur. Schließlich bietet die Studie eine Einordnung der Erzählung als Beitrag zum Toradiskurs der vormakkabäischen hellenistischen Zeit

    Abstract: This study explores the identity of the Bene Israel caste from India and its assimilation into Israeli society. The large immigration from India to Israel started in the early 1950s and continued until the early 1970s. Initially, these immigrants struggled hard as they faced many problems such as the language barrier, cultural differences, a new climate, geographical isolation, and racial discrimination. This analysis focuses on the three major aspects of the integration process involving the Bene Israel: economic, socio-cultural and political. The study covers the period from the early fifties to the present. I will focus on the origin of the Bene Israel, which has evolved after their immigration to Israel; from a Hindu–Muslim lifestyle and customs they integrated into the Jewish life of Israel. Despite its ethnographic nature, this study has theological implications as it is an encounter between Jewish monotheism and Indian polytheism. [...]

The short poem – recently discovered in the single manuscript that preserves it – is a new precious document that enriches a small corpus of medieval Judeo-Provençal texts. This book offers the first critical edition of the complete text accompanied by a detailed study of the sources and the language. It guides us in understanding why the story of Esther became such a popular theme in 14th-century Provence, and in what way the Avignon Papacy and the studies on Moses Maimonides influenced this literary novelty

Das Buch plädiert für eine einheitliche exegetische Tradition in Alexandrien, welche beide Gestalten der Tora – die griechische und die hebräische – berücksichtigt
    Abstract: The translation of the Torah into Greek in Alexandria is an intriguing puzzle. Why was it undertaken at all? Was it a need of the Alexandrian Jews? Or did the Jewish wisdom intrigue the Egyptian ruler? Is the legend of the miraculous creation of the Septuagint a manifesto of cultural assimilation into the Hellenic culture? Does the Alexandrian Greek biblical exegesis, especially that of Philo, aim to break with the Hebrew tradition? According to this book, Philo, although not fluent in Hebrew himself, moves in the same shared Hebrew-Greek Torah universe that a closer look on the Septuagint legend reveals as well. Die Übersetzung der Tora ins Griechische in Alexandrien ist ein intrigierendes Rätsel. Warum wurde sie überhaupt unternommen? War sie ein Bedürfnis der alexandrinischen Juden? Oder machte die jüdische Weisheit den ägyptischen Herrscher neugierig? Ist die Legende über die wundersame Entstehung der Septuaginta ein Manifest der kulturellen Assimilation an die hellenische Kultur?     Abstract: Why do questions of purity play a minor role in the New Testament when the majority of the texts are of Jewish origin and character? To answer this question, the present study analyses the forming of identity as a central function to purity in ancient Jewish sources. Using the theory of social identity according to Henri Taijfel and John Turner, Milena Hasselmann examined the importance of purity texts in the New Testament and in other ancient Jewish sources for the construction of social identity. On a broad basis of sources and with the help of Hebrew-language literature, which is little received in the German and English-language scientific context, it becomes a meaningful picture that places the purity texts of the New Testament in its wider environment. In doing so, she shows that the New Testament's handling of questions of purity is to be seen in continuity rather than discontinuity with other ancient traditions. Warum nehmen Reinheitsfragen einen verhältnismäßig geringen Stellenwert im Neuen Testament ein, wenn die Texte mehrheitlich jüdischen Ursprungs und jüdischer Prägung sind? Dieser Frage geht die vorliegende Studie nach und setzt zu ihrer Beantwortung bei einer zentralen Funktion, die Reinheit in anderen antiken jüdischen Quellen zukommt, ein: Reinheitsbestimmungen sind identitätsstiftend. Mit der Theorie der Sozialen Identität nach Henri Tajfel und John Turner untersucht Milena Hasselmann, welche Bedeutung Reinheitstexte im Neuen Testament und in anderen antikjüdischen Quellen für die Konstruktion sozialer Identität haben. Auf einer breiten Quellenbasis und unter Hinzuziehung hebräischsprachiger Literatur, die im deutsch- und englischsprachigem Wissenschaftskontext wenig rezipiert wird, entwirft sie ein aussagekräftiges Bild, das die Reinheitstexte des Neuen Testament in dessen weitere Umwelt einordnet. Sie zeigt damit, dass der neutestamentliche Umgang mit Reinheitsfragen in Kontinuität zu anderen antiken Traditionen zu sehen ist

    Abstract: Thoroughly researched, this study highlights the historical scholarship that is one of the lasting legacies of interwar Polish Jewry and analyses its political and social context. As Jewish citizens struggled to assert their place in a newly independent Poland, a dedicated group of Jewish scholars fascinated by history devoted themselves to creating a sense of Polish Jewish belonging while also fighting for their rights as an ethnic minority. The political climate made it hard for these men and women to pursue an academic career; instead they had to continue their efforts to create and disseminate Polish Jewish history by teaching outside the university and publishing in scholarly and popular journals. By introducing the Jewish public to a pantheon of historical heroes to celebrate and anniversaries to commemorate, they sought to forge a community aware of its past, its cultural heritage, and its achievements---though no less important were their efforts to counter the increased hostility towards Jews in the public discourse of the day. In highlighting the role of public intellectuals and the social role of scholars and historical scholarship, this study adds a new dimension to the understanding of the Polish Jewish world in the interwar period.

    Abstract: Dieser Band untersucht anhand ausgewählter dänischer Prosa im 19. Jahrhundert die Ambivalenz philosemitischer Literatur. Es wird gezeigt, wie bestehende Vorstellungen über Juden und Jüdinnen einerseits literarisch entlarvt und gebrochen werden, und wie andererseits jüdische Figuren weiterhin Projektionsfläche und christliches Phantasma bleiben. Philosemitismus wird als spezifisch literarisches Phänomen betrachtet, indem gefragt wird, welche Erzählmöglichkeiten sich durch die jüdischen Figuren im Text eröffnen und was diese Figuren literarisch so attraktiv macht. Obwohl die untersuchten Texte zumeist um das Thema Religion kreisen, interessieren sie sich kaum für das Judentum ihrer jüdischen Figuren. Vielmehr dienen die Juden und Jüdinnen dazu, das Christentum aufzuwerten und zu erneuern. Dabei spielen Fragen nach Politik und nationalem Selbstverständnis ebenso eine Rolle wie nach Geschlecht, Begehren und der Bedeutung von Kunst.

    Abstract: Blick ins Buch In Europa tritt verstärkt ein „neuer antizionistischer Antisemitismus“ auf. Mit dem Verblassen der Erinnerung an die Shoah, Sekundärantisemitismus und dem Glauben an ein geeintes Europa, das nationalstaatliche Denkweisen überwindet, findet sich ein zunehmend kritisches Denken gegenüber dem Zionismus. Israel wird zum “Juden unter den Völkern”. Antisemitische Kritik am Staat Israel kommt aus verschiedenen Richtungen: von rechts (Rassismus), links (Kapitalismuskritik und Antizionismus) und vom politischen Islam (Übernahme antijüdischer Polemik aus religiösen Schriften). Diese Mischung zeigt sich in sogenannten „Cultural Codes“, in Form von teils christlich, teils muslimisch geprägten Motiven, die jedoch einen antisemitischen Hintergrund haben. „Auge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn“, „Rache“ oder „Wallstreet“ sind solche codierten Schlagwörter, die sich regelmäßig auch in deutschsprachigen Medien finden. Raimund Fastenbauer vergleicht erstmals die Verwendung solcher antisemitischen Motive im Internet und anderen Medien islamisch geprägter Länder mit jenen in deutschsprachigen Printmedien und weist so den starken Einfluss nach, den diese „Codes“ in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung haben.

    Abstract: Die Geschichtsschreibung terminiert das Ende des deutschen Zionismus bisher mit dem NS-Verbot der Zionistischen Vereinigung für Deutschland im Zuge des Novemberpogroms 1938. Entgegen aller zionistischen Theorie gründeten sie auf landsmannschaftlicher Basis im Jahr 1932 die Selbsthilfeorganisation Hitachduth Olej Germania und während des Weltkrieges die Partei Alija Chadascha. Die Dissertation beinhaltet die Gesamtschau des deutschen Zionismus in seiner letzten Phase in den Jahren 1932 bis 1948; zugleich beleuchtet sie die Geschichte der etwa 60.000 in Palästina eingewanderten Juden aus Deutschland in der für diese Abhandlung relevanten Zeitperiode.     Abstract: In Gelübde im antiken Judentum und frühesten Christentum stellt Daniel Schumann auf breiter Quellenbasis die Diskurse zum "Gelübdewesen" dar, wie sie sich in antik-jüdischen und frühchristlichen Quellen aus der Zeit des Zweiten Tempels schriftlich niedergeschlagen haben. Er zeigt dabei auf, wie Judentum und Christentum seit der Spätantike durch die Rezeption dieser Diskurse in ihrer Religionspraxis an antiken Formen des Gelübdewesen partizipierten und dieses auch weiterentwickelten. Ferner legt er offen, wie sich in jüdischer wie auch christlicher Wahrnehmung Stimmen der Wertschätzung aber auch der Reserviertheit durch die Jahrhunderte hindurch aneinanderreihen; handelt es sich doch beim Gelübdewesen um eine kultpraktische Übung, bei der Heil und Unheil so nah beieinander zu liegen scheinen wie wohl sonst bei kaum einer anderen frömmigkeitlichen Handlung. In Gelübde im antiken Judentum und frühesten Christentum Daniel Schumann aims to trace the earliest discourses on vows, as they are recorded in ancient Jewish and early Christian sources from the time of the Second Temple. He also shows how Judaism and Christianity have participated in ancient forms of vow-making since late antiquity and how they also have developed these discourses further. By presenting these discourses on the basis of a broad range of sources, he reveals how in Jewish as well as in Christian perception, voices of esteem but also of reservation have been raised throughout the centuries. After all, vows are a cult-practical exercise in which well-being and disaster are in closer proximity than in most other acts of devotion

    Abstract: Following tremendous advances in recent years in the study of religious belief, this volume adopts a fresh understanding of Jewish religious life in Poland. Approaches deriving from the anthropology, history, phenomenology, psychology, and sociology of religion have replaced the methodologies of social or political history that were applied in the past, offering fascinating new perspectives. The well-established interest in hasidism continues, albeit from new angles, but topics that have barely been considered before are well represented here too. Women’s religious practice gains new prominence, and a focus on elites has given way to a consideration of the beliefs and practices of ordinary people.     Abstract: In The Theological Profile of the Peshitta of Isaiah , Attila Bodor explores theological elements in the book of Isaiah as represented in the Peshitta. Through a close study of its interpretative renderings, the author shows that this lesser-known ancient version is not only an important witness to textual history and a repository of early exegetical traditions but also testifies to the beliefs of the early Syriac-speaking community from which the Peshitta emerged. In the monograph, sixty-three Peshitta divergences from the Hebrew version of Isaiah are collected and analyzed in order to illustrate the theological implications and the impact of these divergent renderings on the interpretation and reception of the major Isaianic themes that treat God, the Messiah, and the people of God

    Abstract: "In Hispanojewish Archaeology, Alexander Bar-Magen Numhauser provides the first book-length archaeological exploration of the Jewish presence in late antique and early medieval Hispania. Using epigraphic, numismatic, architectural, and other archaeological remains, this volume describes the multiple cultural expressions of a vibrant Jewish community that emerged as part of the Mediterranean Diaspora, becoming part of the wider Hispanian society. Part of this review includes a detailed examination of the Ilici (Elche, Spain) basilical building, interpreted by previous scholars as both a church and a synagogue, using published and hitherto unpublished material of its decades-long excavation.     Abstract: ›Niedergang‹ oder ›Aufstieg‹ – zwischen diesen beiden Polen wurden bereits in der frühen ›Rassenhygiene‹ oder ›Eugenik‹ verschiedene Positionen eingenommen und Handlungsvorschläge unterbreitet, wie die sog. ›Entartung‹ der gesamten modernen ›Kulturmenschheit‹ aufgehalten bzw. deren sog. ›Höherzüchtung‹ vorangetrieben werden könnte. Die vorgeschlagenen Maßnahmen reichten dabei von reduzierter Hilfeleistung für sog. ›Schwache‹, über Heiratsförderungen oder -verbote und Zwangssterilisation bis hin zur staatlich gesteuerten Fortpflanzung der Menschen. Dies hatte zur Folge, dass sich zum Ende des 19. und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auch in Deutschland eine erhebliche Bandbreite an ›rassenhygienischer‹ Literatur entwickelte, welche die Grundlage der vorliegenden Diskursanalyse bildet. “Decline“ or “rise” – between these two poles of the early “Rassenhygiene” or “Eugenik” different positions and recommendations were proposed for the prevention of the so-called “Entartung” of the modern “Kulturmenschheit” or the promotion of the so-called “Höherzüchtung”. The suggested agendas covered limited assistance for so-called “weak”, special facilitation or ban of marriage and forced sterilization to the point of state-controlled reproduction of human beings. As a consequence, by the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century an extensive variety of “rassenhygienischer” literature emerged in Germany forming the basis for the present discourse analysis.

Der deutsch-jüdische Schriftsteller und Philosoph Günther Anders (1902–1992) ist für seine Deutungen der atomaren Endzeit bekannt. Anna Pollmann rekonstruiert aus Anders’ philosophischen und literarischen Schriften sein negatives Geschichtsdenken von der Genese in den 1930er Jahren bis hin zur Rezeption seiner Endzeitdiagnosen in den neuen sozialen Bewegungen. Das Buch erzählt von der Zerrüttung des Geschichtsbewusstseins im 20. Jahrhundert. Es macht sichtbar, wie sehr sich diese auch in der Form seines Werkes spiegelt. Die Zäsuren von Auschwitz und Hiroshima werden dabei in ihrer jeweils unterschiedlichen Bedeutung für die Grenzen historischen Denkens behandelt. Die Topografie von Andersʼ Emigration und Remigration nachzeichnend, führt die Studie an biografische Stationen wie Paris, Los Angeles, Berlin und Wien und in die ideengeschichtlichen Kontexte seines Geschichtsdenkens.

    Abstract: Hilsenraths Shoah-Literatur hat von jeher provoziert – die rezeptionsästhetische Wirkung bezieht ihre Sprengkraft zum großen Teil aus der Einbindung von Sexualität. Erstmals beschäftigt sich nun eine literaturwissenschaftliche Arbeit mit der Funktion der tabubehafteten, bisweilen als pornografisch diskreditierten Verschränkung von Sexualität und Shoah. Zunächst werden Hilsenraths Werke eingebettet in den Kontext einer Shoah-Literatur, welche ebenfalls Sexualität auf sprachlicher und narrativer Ebene nutzt. Zweitens erfolgt eine Betrachtung der Werke unter dezidiert genderorientierter Perspektive. Drittens wird die Korrelation von Sexualität und Shoah analysiert, um die stete Funktionsgebundenheit der Sexualität aufzuzeigen: So dient diese beispielsweise dazu, Macht- und Gewaltverhältnisse zu zementieren oder die Versehrtheit der Figuren herauszustellen. Hilsenrath’s literature of the Shoah has always been provocative – the reception-aesthetic effect can be mostly referred to the involvement of sexuality. For the first time, an academic paper focuses on the function of this tabooed and even pornographic discredited connection between sexuality and Shoah. Firstly, Hilsenrath’s works are situated in the context of the literature of the Shoah which also makes use of sexuality on a linguistic and narrative level. Secondly, the works are being analysed under a decided gender-oriented perspective. Thirdly, the correlation of sexuality and Shoah are being analysed in order to show the consistent function of sexuality. Thus, sexuality serves to foster power and violence or to depict the vulnerability of the protagonists.

    Abstract: This book is an analysis of early Jewish thought on human nature, specifically, the complex of characteristics that are understood to be universally innate, and/or God-given, to collective humanity and the manner which they depict human existence in relationship, or lack thereof, to God. Jewish discourse in the Greco-Roman period (4th c. BCE until 1st c. CE) on human nature was not exclusively particularistic, although the immediate concern was often communal-specific. Evidence shows that many of these discussions were also an attempt to grasp a general, or universal, human nature. The focus of this work has been narrowed to three categories that encapsulate the most prevalent themes in Second Temple Jewish texts, namely, creation, composition, and condition.

    Abstract: The 2018 Yearbook of the Dubnow Institute comprises two focal points: The first offers new approaches to the history of the Jews in the GDR. Historical research has in recent decades focused primarily on the lives of Jewish Communists as well as the relationship between the SED to Jewish citizens of the GDR and to Israel. This volume therefore focuses on questions relating both to the lived realities in the Jewish communities of the GDR and to individual self-conceptions in the tension between Socialism and Jewish heritage in the “workers’ and peasants’ state”. The second focal point reports on the on-site cataloging work conducted in archives and private collections in Israel. Various aspects and perspectives of an only recently rediscovered tradition of German Jewish history are here presented on the basis of estates and collections identified, cataloged, and processed in the framework of a joint project of the German Literature Archive in Marbach and the Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem over the past years. Archival theory and practice as well as questions of knowledge transfer and exile research are thereby addressed through case studies drawn from zoology, urban planning, orientalism, librarianship, film, and theater. The General Section and the Features of the Yearbook contain contributions on protagonists and facets of Jewish literary, political, philosophical, and economic history as well as their reception in Germany, Lithuania, the Soviet Union, and the United States, including Hannah Arendt, Lazar Gulkowitsch, Melvin J.     Abstract: Fragt man nach der Rolle des Privaten im Nationalsozialismus, werden meist zwei Thesen aufgeführt: Das Privatleben im Dritten Reich wurde politisiert, andererseits hat ein Rückzug in private Nischen stattgefunden. Unabhängig davon wurde dem zeitgenössischen Verständnis bislang nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Diese Studie rekonstruiert unterschiedliche Bedeutungen des Privaten während des NS-Regimes und versteht das Private als ein Deutungsmuster, mit dem gesellschaftliche und politische Prozesse analysiert wurden. Auf der Grundlage von autobiographischen Beiträgen deutscher Emigranten, die 1940 in Harvard gesammelt wurden, zeigt der Autor, dass es zu einer zentralen sprachlichen Praxis wurde, zwischen Privatem und Politischem zu unterscheiden. Ausgrenzung und Verfolgung drangen selbst in die Sprache des Privaten ein. So werden bisherige Forschungen zum Nationalsozialismus um eine neue Sichtweise aus der Historischen Semantik ergänzt

    Abstract: Der "Ewige Jude" stand auf dem Index der verbotenen Bücher - das lässt aufhorchen: Kämpfte die katholische Kirche so gegen antisemitische Stereotype? Dieser Frage geht der Autor anhand der Verfahren gegen die französischen Autoren Edgar Quinet und Eugène Sue nach, die das Motiv des Ewigen Juden im 19. Jahrhundert neu interpretierten.Der detaillierte Einblick in den Alltag der Zensoren ist entlarvend: In den Archiven der Inquisition und der Indexkongregation sind irreführende Gutachten zu finden, die für ihre Verfasser nur noch Mittel zu dem Zweck waren, sich in den revolutionären Kämpfen ihrer Zeit richtig zu positionieren. Mitarbeiter der zuständigen Kongregationen waren völlig überfordert, und Bücher wurden sogar ohne vorherige Lektüre verboten. Die unverzichtbare Analyse weiterer, zeitgleich ablaufender Verfahren im Kontext der kirchenpolitischen Großwetterlage zeigt schließlich: Der "Ewige Jude" geriet nicht wegen Antisemitismus in den Blick der Zensoren, sondern weil insbesondere Sue als antijesuitisch, unmoralisch, sozialistisch und revolutionär galt

    Abstract: Die Studie widmet sich erstmals epochenübergreifend der jüdischen Beteiligung in der italienischen Frauenbewegung. Aus einer transnationalen Perspektive und auf der Basis neu erschlossener Egodokumente, zeitgenössischer Zeitschriften, den Archiven jüdischer Gemeinden sowie der Überlieferung von Polizei und Behörden richtet Ruth Nattermann den Fokus auf die Erfahrungen italienisch-jüdischer Protagonistinnen im liberalen Einheitsstaat, während des Ersten Weltkriegs und der faschistischen Diktatur bis 1945. Das Ziel besteht darin, die Spannungen des Emanzipationsprozesses zwischen Partizipation und Abgrenzung herauszuarbeiten sowie die Marginalisierung und Verfolgung während des faschistischen Regimes aus dem Blickwinkel jüdischer Frauen zu betrachten. Dass die faschistische Rassengesetzgebung des Jahres 1938 nicht das Ende einer idyllischen Integration, sondern den Höhepunkt einer langfristigen Entwicklung bildete, wird anhand der Untersuchung italienisch-jüdischer Akteurinnen in ihren Beziehungen zur nicht-jüdischen Mehrheitsgesellschaft eindrücklich demonstriert. Trotz ihres bedeutenden Einflusses auf die transnationale Orientierung der italienischen Frauenbewegung blieb ihre Emanzipation als Frauen und Jüdinnen unvollkommen

    Abstract: Vorliegende Studie eruiert die zivilrechtliche Stellung der jüdischen Minderheit vor landesherrlichen Gerichten im 18. Jahrhundert anhand dreier territorialer Obergerichte. Sie bietet dabei einen weitgreifenden Einblick in die mannigfaltigen Konfliktfelder, welche innerjüdische und jüdisch-christliche Prozesse vor christlichen Gerichten in der Frühen Neuzeit evozierten. Im Fokus der Untersuchung stehen nicht die Parteien oder deren Anwälte, sondern die Richter. Es wird sorgfältig skizziert, wie diese über die zur Entscheidung stehenden Fälle debattierten, um zu Urteilen zu gelangen, welche (diskursiven) Regeln die Debatten strukturierten bzw. begrenzten und inwiefern diese Regeln es gestatteten, den jüdischen Glauben einzelner Parteien für die Urteilsfindung zu bedenken.
