Abstract:
Discusses implementation of the Nazi order of 25 February 1943 in Thessaloniki to exclude all Jews from membership in professional associations relating to the behavior of four such associations. Of these, only the Lawyers Association of Thessaloniki resorted to some type of delaying tactics in support of its 17 Jewish members. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Thessaloniki excluded its Jewish members swiftly and without any attempt to object, whereas in other cases not connected with Jews this association did use delaying tactics. The Journalists Union of Macedonia and Thrace began to cleanse itself of Jewish members even before the order was issued, and was the first to fulfill it. The Industrialists Association of Macedonia and Thrace also removed 34 Jewish companies from its lists swiftly and smoothly. Characteristically, in Thessaloniki, a city that was undergoing Hellenization, Jewish professionals had encountered neglect, indifference, and even hostility by their colleagues and partners for many years.
