Abstract:
Presents a historical overview of the relationship between Jews and Christians in the Orient in the 7th century, and the full text (with a French translation) of the anonymous anti-Jewish dialogue "Doctrina Jacobi nuper baptizati" ("The Doctrine of Jacob the Neophyte"), written in 7th-century Byzantium. The discussions between the Christian Giusto and the Jew Jacobi focus on the importance of the forced conversions of Jews which were carried out in several parts of the country. By studying the catechesis, as described in the text, the Jews' initial confusion regarding their new identity is replaced by a "conversion of the heart". In the "Commentaire" (pp. 230-273), the authors argue that the "Doctrina", which mixes polemics with eschatological themes, was probably authored by a non-Jew and intended for Jewish readers with the purpose of converting them. The Jews, prior to their conversion, are portrayed as violent, living a lie, and blinded by the Devil.
