Abstract:
Defends Pius XII against accusations which arose after his death, that he was silent in the face of Nazi crimes and did not do enough to save Jews during the Holocaust. Focuses on the book by John Cornwell, "Hitler's Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII" (1999). Cornwell tries to prove that Pacelli was an antisemite based on documents from the years 1917-20, when he was the apostolic nuncio in Munich. Asserts that the documents prove only that Pius XII was a preconciliar Christian and consequently could not have been a philosemite, but as Pope he followed the policy of his predecessor, Pius XI. After 1942 he avoided useless declarations against the Nazis, preferring diplomatic action, local involvement of bishops, and, when necessary, his own intervention in order to save Jews. Relates to the writings of Pinchas E. Lapide to support his views. Lapide maintains that 800,000 Jews were saved as a consequence of Pius XII's intervention.
