Abstract:
On pp. 200-205, relates that the mass murder of Jews in Treblinka in 1942-43 became a source of revenue for the administration, the guards, and the local population, as well as for Jewish prisoners. The latter could add the food brought by new internees (who were gassed) to their daily food ration, and could exchange valuables left by the victims for food. The guards, who participated in these exchanges, also got their share. Local peasants provided prisoners with food and the guards with liquor and whores. The German administration sometimes pilfered valuables. In addition, numerous prostitutes and brokers came from Warsaw to the vicinity in order to enrich themselves. Pp. 205-211 discuss the postwar period, when various commissions were sent to Treblinka in order to investigate the situation of the camp and to decide about its future preservation. Notes that people from the vicinity went there to search for valuables.
