Abstract:
Compares the main character's experiences in Anna Langfus's Holocaust novel, "Le sel et le soufre" (1960), with those of the author. Shows that Langfus remains basically true to her personal story, but recounts it in a way which emphasizes the heroine's life as a descent towards the land of the dead. Rather than being an autoportrait, the novel outlines the features of "the Survivor", a character that haunts our century. Langfuss was born in 1920 in Lublin to a wealthy Jewish family. She spent some time in the Lublin ghetto, then hid on the Aryan side in Warsaw and participated in the Polish resistance. She emigrated to France in 1946.
