Abstract:
The author of the article, Tomasz Wiśniewski (PhD) – a teacher of Holocaust history, film director, and writer from Białystok – returns to the idea of establishing a Museum of Białystok Jews. As he emphasizes, for centuries Jews have been “a constitutive element of our town. They co-created it in every respect: economic, social, and cultural.” Enumerating famous Jews living in Białystok, such as Ludwig Zamenhoff, Szumel Mohylewer, and Józef Chazanowicz, he remarks that “for many Jews descending from the families living here, Białystok is a magic place.” The author reminds us of the 2017 initiative to establish a modern Museum of Białystok Jews, the works on which were planned to start in 2020, when the pandemic broke out. Nonetheless, this obstacle does not mean the end of the project.
