Abstract:
Describes the Nazi occupation of Kletsk (Belarus); the murder of more than 4,000 Jews on 30 October 1941; life in the ghetto which was founded afterwards for the remaining Jews (ca. 1,500-2,000); preparations to resist the liquidation of the ghetto; and the reaction of the Judenrat to the underground activities. On 22 July 1943, when the Nazis and Belorussian and Lithuanian collaborators approached the ghetto to liquidate it, the underground set fire to the ghetto. Most of the inhabitants died in the fire or were killed by Nazi bullets. Some escaped to nearby ghettos and to partisan groups; those remaining were executed. After the war, some of the perpetrators were put on trial.
