Abstract:
Discusses the declaration of the Barmen synod in May 1934, as a reaction to the statement of the Deutsche Christen in 1933. The latter supported the idea of an Aryan Christianity, which had liberated itself from the Ancient Testament and from Jewish ethics, while adopting Nazi ideas. The Barmen synod, in which 139 delegates from 25 provincial churches participated, proclaimed liberty for the Church within a totalitarian state. However, there was no statement in favor of the Jewish people and against their persecution. An important synod of another denomination took place in October 1934 in Dahlem. From these beginnings, later, the Bekennende Kirche was founded.
