Abstract:
Relates the history of Bukharan Jewry before the Russian conquests in Central Asia in the 19th century, including the legal status of the Jews in Muslim Bukhara. Discusses the Russian consolidation of power and changes in Russian policy toward the Jews in Central Asia. The Muslim rulers of Bukhara persecuted the Jews with forced conversion to Islam, heavy taxation, and humiliation. It appears that Russian preparations for the conquests included attempts to win over the Jewish merchants by privileges denied to Jews in the Pale of Settlement, such as the right to join merchant guilds and to acquire real estate outside the Pale, and the right to apply for Russian citizenship. This period was followed by attempts to appease the Muslim protectorates, and the merchants in Russia, by the revocation of the privileges granted to Jews in 1833-68.
