Abstract:
Based on a lecture held in Berlin in January 2005 at the Blindenwerkstatt Otto Weidt. Out of 45,000 files of the Berlin branch of the Nazi Vermögensverwertungsstelle, the office in charge of locating and confiscating the financial and other possessions of Jews who had left Germany (i.e. had been deported), chooses to analyze the fate of Erich and Elsbeth Frey. Erich Frey worked in the workshop for the blind run by Weidt from 1940-43. Then the elderly couple went into hiding in March 1943, but were discovered in April 1944 and sent to Theresienstadt and from there to Auschwitz, where they were murdered. The office began its work on their case while they were still living in hiding in Berlin, and carried it out with bureaucratic thoroughness and efficiency.
