Abstract:
In the 11th century, due to stabilization in the Byzantine Empire, there was an increase in the number of Jews who wanted to be baptized. Having no trust in the sincerity of these baptisms, Church authorities introduced a special rite for the abandoning of Judaism to be performed by the neophyte. This formula went against the decisions of the 2nd and 3rd Ecumenical Councils, according to which baptism was to be the same for all non-Christians. Notes that, although antisemitism was on the rise in the Byzantine Empire from the 10th century, the Empire did not experience pogroms nor antisemitism based on chimeric fantasies, nor were there humiliating rules for Jews as there were in Western Europe at this time. Pp. 325-329 contain a Russian version of the formula for "abandoning Judaism".
