Abstract:
Analyzes the ambivalent attitude towards the Jews of Metropolitan Antonii, a leader of the Russian Orthodox Church at the beginning of the 20th century, with ties to the pre-revolutionary radical right. Antonii was known during his early career as a defender of the Jews and the Talmud who condemned the Kishinev pogrom. Later he changed his views, took part in antisemitic activities, and approved of pogroms. During the Beilis trial he expressed belief in Jewish ritual murder practices. The participation of Jews in the 1917 Revolution caused Antonii to reinterpret the Jews' betrayal of Jesus in terms hostile to the Jews, but he did not adopt the thesis that the Revolution was the result of a Jewish conspiracy.
