Abstract:
Analyzes the attitude towards Judaism and Jews in the legal corpus of Alfonso X (1221-1284), including the "Setenario", "Fuero Real", "El Espéculo", and the "Siete Partidas". Warns against recent scholarly focus on the "Siete Partidas" which were not promulgated during Alfonso's lifetime, do not reflect his personal views, and draw heavily on canon law precedents, especially the decretals of Pope Gregory III as compiled by the Dominican Raymundo de Peñaforte. Thus, they mention the obligation to wear a Jewish badge, imposed by Innocent III in 1215 and rarely enforced in Spain. As a whole, Alfonsine legislation restricted the Jews but protected them as long as they did not engage in close social relations with Christians or insult Christianity. However, proselytism or sexual relations was punishable by death, and the deicide and ritual murder charges were repeated in hostile language.
