Kurzfassung:
French Jews enjoyed a "golden age" at the end of the 20th century, but the situation changed abruptly in September 2000, with the onset of the second Intifada in Israel. During October there were many cases in France of synagogue burnings and desecration, stone-throwing, and beatings of Jews committed by Muslims. The violence declined, but erupted again in September 2001 and April 2002. The French government and the judiciary prefer to view the violence not as antisemitic, but as a result of inter-ethnic conflict, for which the Jews are blamed as well as Muslims. Discusses the role played by demography in this issue, since there are ca. six million Muslims in France, which is 10% of the French population and ten times the number of Jewish citizens. Most of the Muslims have not assimilated into French society and maintain radical Islamic beliefs. Antisemitic literature is popular in France, and several works on Judeophobia have appeared during 2002. French Jews do not see the situation as another version of Nazi antisemitism, but many of them have emigrated.
