Abstract:
When riots against the Jews erupted in the city of Valencia in July 1391, Martí Duke of Montblanc, the future king Martí I of Aragón, was in Valencia arranging a naval expedition to Sicily. The riots spread over the entire Kingdom of Aragón in 1391-92. Martí failed to protect the Jews of Valencia - to the dissatisfaction of his brother, King Joan I, who regarded the Jews of Aragón as the crown's treasure. Having the Sicilian expedition as his priority and afraid that his harsh measures against the rioters would obstruct it, the duke chose another way to pacify the province: he condoned and in fact permitted forced conversions of Jews. The duke's policy concerning the conversion of Jews, with the security of the holdings of the Conversos, would be a feature of later policies in the Iberian peninsula.
