Abstract:
This article sheds light on the question of Holocaust consciousness in the atomic age by working through the writings of philosopher and writer Günther Anders. In his American exile, Anders prepared his anthropology of technology Die Antiquiertheit des Menschen. Über die Seele im Zeitalter der zweiten industriellen Revolution. Auschwitz and Hiroshima became intertwined in his interpretation of destructive modern technology. This collection of essays was not published in West Germany until 1956, but became of central importance to the anti-nuclear movement that emerged in the late 1950s. The article traces Anders’ two journeys to West Berlin, one in 1953 and one in 1958, examining the reception of his writings as well as the understanding of the Holocaust in relation to an imagined end of history.
