Abstract:
This article examines the position of the Holocaust in the memory of the Austrian left after 1945, specifically the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and the Communist Party (KPÖ). Although the Austrian left counted many Jews amongst its members, the left-wing parties of the postwar period for a long time did not ascribe any special meaning to the Holocaust. Rather, this memory was overlaid with other incisive experiences of the interwar period. Especially the events of February 1934 and Austrofascism constituted a collective trauma for the Austrian left. Despite all such superimpositions and repressions, however, this article argues that the Holocaust was always latently present in the Austrian left and that its memory repeatedly broke through at specific moments (for example during the Six-Day War in 1967) and through specific actors (such as Bruno Frei).
