Abstract: Concentrating on the reception of the Frankfurt school of critical theory in the United States, this article examines why the Holocaust only entered consciousness with a considerable delay. Starting with the discussions around Martin Jay’s monumental study Dialectical Imagination (1973), this contribution shows how the writings that constituted a direct or indirect response to the destruction of the Jews in Europe were evaded in the 1960s, the first period of reception, both due to political aspirations as well as the particularity of historical thinking in the United States.
