Abstract:
This article discusses the history of Matzpen (Compass), the Israeli Socialist Organization from a neglected perspective: It examines why and how these Israeli Leftists kept their distance from the new collective Jewish self-perception that regarded the existence of a Jewish state as the ultima ratio for Jewish life after the Holocaust. Based on the utopia of a socialist revolution, Matzpen struggled for a so-called de-Zionization of Israeli society and simultaneously for the recognition of Israeli Jewry as a new Hebrew nation. The article explores the degree to which this utopia contributed to Matzpen’s avoidance of the significance of the Holocaust and its impacts on Jewish consciousness. As the Israeli Leftists clung to their faith in progress, rooted in the socialist teleology of history and referring to the political struggles of previous generations, Matzpen’s alienation from the consequences of mass extermination only increased. Thus, the article concludes with an historical aporia: the conflict between the perpetual effects of the Holocaust on the one hand and the unresolved Israel-Palestine conflict on the other.
