Abstract:
Debates concerning Holocaust memorialization in Canada and the proposed Holocaust gallery in the government's Canadian War Museum began in the late 1990s. The project met with opposition from various circles. After discussions, an idea was put forth to establish such a gallery within the planned Canadian Museum of Human Rights, to be opened in Winnipeg in 2013-14. This idea met with opposition on the part of many ethnic groups which had had genocidal experiences in the past, among them Ukrainians and Armenians; they demanded that their experiences be included in the planned exhibition, on a par with the Holocaust gallery. A controversy on the uniqueness of the Holocaust broke out, which pitted various ethnic groups in Canada against one another and delayed the opening of the museum. Criticizes the solution found by the museum's administration, which failed to render due respect to the victims, both Jewish and non-Jewish.
