Kurzfassung:
A study based on examination of 662 petitions sent to the tsar and the State Duma from the Belorussian regions during the First Russian Revolution in 1905-07, found in the archives of St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Belarus. Only 69 petitions, or 10.4%, touch upon or mention Jewishness directly, and another 24 address Jewishness implicitly. Five petitions express a positive attitude toward Jews, eight express a neutral attitude, and the rest may be characterized as antisemitic in various degrees. The core image of the Jew, as seen by the authors of the 69 petitions, is of a rich and successful person. Notes that the petitions that express the most negative attitude toward Jews express an even more negative attitude toward non-Jewish landlords, etc. The antisemitism expressed in the petitions is a form of hatred of everything alien and heterodox. Contends that the "silence" on Jews and Jewishness of the other 569 petitions shows that the general attitude toward Jews was neutral or indifferent, i.e. the level of antisemitism in Belorussia was low in this period.
