Abstract:
Chronicles France's delayed recognition, as expressed in commemorations and memorials, of the Jews as the special victims of the Nazis, and of France's share of guilt for their deportation to the death camps. This recognition did not really emerge until the 1990s, with the erection of the central Holocaust memorial at the Vél d'Hiv and Chirac's speech of 1995, in which, rather than join Mitterrand in casting the blame on the aberrant Vichy regime, he confessed in the name of historical France.
