Abstract:
Contrasts Berkovits' views with those of other post-Holocaust Jewish theologians, stressing that for Berkovits the Holocaust was quantitatively, but not qualitatively, different from other instances of Jewish suffering throughout history. Therefore, he was able to maintain faith in the God of Judaism and in His covenant with the Jewish people. He noted how a large number of Jews kept their faith during the Holocaust and believed that the Divine covenant with the Jews was still in force despite "hester panim", God's hiding of His face. The Jews continue to be God-chosen and the reborn State of Israel offers Jews hope for a messianic fate. Christianity, however, has irremediably failed, as demonstrated by its role in preparing the way for the Holocaust.
