    Abstract: "This book is the first to offer a full account of the varied contributions of German Jews to Imperial Germany's endeavors during the Great War. Historian Tim Grady examines the efforts of the 100,000 Jewish soldiers who served in the German military (12,000 of whom died), as well as the various activities Jewish communities supported at home, such as raising funds for the war effort and securing vital food supplies. However, Grady's research goes much deeper: he shows that German Jews were never at the periphery of Germany's warfare, but were in fact heavily involved. The author finds that many German Jews were committed to the same brutal and destructive war that other Germans endorsed, and he discusses how the conflict was in many ways lived by both groups alike. What none could have foreseen was the dangerous legacy they created together, a legacy that enabled Hitler's rise to power and planted the seeds of the Holocaust to come"...

    Abstract: Iets meer dan honderd jaar nadat de joden aan het eind van de 15de eeuw uit Spanje en Portugal werden verdreven, vonden groepen van diens nakomelingen en van de achtergebleven conversos hun weg naar Amsterdam. Hier werden educatieve programma?s ontwikkeld om hen te helpen terug te keren naar het jodendom. In 1616 werd hiervoor de school Talmud Tora (Tora-studie) en de bibliotheek Ets Haim (Levensboom) opgericht. De bibliotheek bevindt zich sinds 1675 op de huidige locatie in het prachtige complex van de Portugees-Israe͏̈litische Synagoge te Amsterdam en is daarmee de oudste nog functionerende bibliotheek ter wereld. 00In 1889 werd de bibliotheek aanzienlijk uitgebreid met de privé-collectie van de bibliothecaris David Montezinos (1866-1916). De bibliotheek, die uit circa 600 handschriften en 25.000 gedrukte werken bestaat, bezit een grote en rijke collectie op het gebied van het 17de- en 18de-eeuwse jodendom en is hiermee al bijna 400 jaar een wezenlijk onderdeel van het culturele erfgoed van Amsterdam. 00Ets Haim ? Livraria Montezinos herbergt veel unieke, zeldzame en bijzondere boeken en documenten. Als bronnen voor onze kennis van geschiedenis en cultuur zijn ze van onschatbare waarde. Vaak springt de bijzondere schoonheid in het oog, maar soms moet men langere tijd met aandacht naar een werk kijken totdat het zijn geheimen begint prijs te geven. 00Het Joods Historisch Museum houdt van 19 september t/m 8 januari 2017 een tentoonstelling waar de rijk gei͏̈llustreerde topstukken van Ets Haim getoond zullen worden. De objecten laten op bijzondere wijze zien hoe divers de collecties zijn samengesteld en geven een indruk van de brede belangstelling die het onderwijsinstituut Ets Haim karakteriseert.     Abstract: "The story of the Jews in twentieth-century Russia as told through the strange history of the Soviet solution to the Jewish question. In 1929, the Soviet Union declared the area of Birobidzhan a homeland for Jews. In the late 1920s and early 1932, tens of thousands of Jews moved to Birobidzhan, chased from the shtetl by poverty, hunger, and fear. Birobidzhan was written about breathlessly by a small group of intellectuals who envisioned a home built by Jews for Jews--a place where Jews worked the land and where Yiddish would become the common language of a post-oppression Jewish culture. The short period of state-building ended in the late 1930s with arrests and purges of the Communist Party and cultural elite.     Abstract: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in the world. This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear theological position, or on issues of socialisation. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the Medieval period, and inter-religious research.

Sociology emerged in a society where modernization was often perceived as destroying unity and "social cohesion." Antisemitism was likewise a response to the modern age, offering in its vilifications of "the Jew" an explanation of society's deficiencies and crises. Antisemitism and the Constitution of Sociology is a collection of twelve essays providing a comparative analysis of modern antisemitism and the rise of sociology. This volume addresses three key areas: the strong influence of writers of Jewish background and the rising tide of antisemitism on the formation of sociology; the role of antisemitism in the historical development of sociology through its treatment by leading figures in the field, such as Emile Durkheim, Talcott Parsons, and Theodor W. Adorno; and the discipline's development in the aftermath of the Nazi Holocaust. Together the essays provide a fresh perspective on the history of sociology and the role that antisemitism, Jews, fascism, and the Holocaust played in shaping modern social theory. "

    Abstract: "This volume of Polin, based on scholarship that has emerged since the fall of communism, is a wide-ranging contribution to the complex history of the Jews in Lithuania. Focusing on the specific character of Lithuanian Jewry, the volume opens by examining how their relationship with the surrounding society developed after 1772, both under tsarist rule and then in independent Lithuania. Moving to more recent times, the devastating impact on the Jewish community of the Soviet and Nazi occupations during the Second World War is discussed, as are the further negative consequences on Jewish life of the reoccupation of the country by the Soviets between 1944 and 1990. The volume concludes with material on the slow revival of Jewish life since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the re-emergence of an independent Lithuania, which was accompanied by the revival of many disciplines, such as the study of Jewish history, repressed by Soviet censorship. This revived interest in the country's Jewish past is now playing a key role in the broader transformation of historical memory of the post-Soviet era and the problem of coming to terms with the widespread local collaboration in Lithuania during the Holocaust -- a process which has led to important scholarly advances but also to bitter controversy. Collectively, the studies in this volume contribute to a better understanding of the complex history of the Jews in Lithuania and of Lithuanian-Jewish relations and constitute a part of the necessary process of creating a more rounded and inclusive history of the country."--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: Human rights offer a vision of international justice that today's idealistic millions hold dear. Yet the very concept on which the movement is based became familiar only a few decades ago when it profoundly reshaped our hopes for an improved humanity. Here, historian Samuel Moyn elevates that transformation to center stage and asks what it reveals about the ideal's troubled present and uncertain future. It was on the ruins of earlier political utopias, Moyn argues, that human rights achieved contemporary prominence. The morality of individual rights substituted for the soiled political dreams of revolutionary communism and nationalism as international law became an alternative to popular struggle and bloody violence.
