Abstract:
Examines the attitude of Pope Pius XII in 1942-43 to wartime developments, and the diplomatic activities of Papée. In his Christmas speech delivered on 24 December 1942, the Pope opposed the war in general but did not mention any nation involved - not the Poles, the Jews, or the Germans. The President of the Polish government-in-exile, Władysław Raczkiewicz, sent a telegram to the Pope on 2 January 1943 relating the Nazi terror in Polish lands and the extermination of the Jews, and asked the Pope to intervene. Representatives of the Allied states also asked the Vatican for a response and protest, but they had no effect. Pp. 303-314 present letters and notes sent by Papée to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Polish government-in-exile, containing information on the situation in Poland and his audiences and conversations with the Pope. During these audiences the Pope explained the Vatican's difficult political situation and his own conviction that intervention by the Vatican would be used as a pretext for even worse persecutions.
Note:
Includes six documents (pp. 303-314).
