Abstract:
Coppa repudiates his own previous and others' continuing view that popes Pius XI and Pius XII pursued similar, conciliatory policies toward the Nazis. On the basis of newly available documentation, concludes that, unlike his successor, Pius XI opposed racism, both of the Nazis in Germany and of the fascists in Italy. While he retained his religious anti-Judaism and the prejudices it entailed, Pius XI disagreed with and, on a number of occasions, publicly condemned racial antisemitism, which he believed contradicted Catholic teaching. Notes the opposition within the Church at the time, including that of his future heir, to Pius XI's anti-racist stance. The culmination of this position was the preparation of his encyclical condemning racism; its publication was halted by his death, and it was permanently set aside by Pius XII.
