Abstract:
The Hashomer Hatzair Zionist youth movement in pre-war Poland was small and somewhat isolationist, concentrating on a pro-Soviet socialist ideology and preparing Jewish youth for life on kibbutzim in Eretz Israel. Focuses on the branch in Warsaw, and later in the ghetto, where leaders of the movement continued to hold a radical pro-Soviet position. They called for neutrality on the part of the Yishuv until the German invasion of the USSR, after which they supported a more active role for both Yishuv and diaspora Jews. In 1942 they themselves took on a more active role in education in the ghetto and began to influence the ghetto inhabitants through the movement's periodical. Shortly afterward they decided to focus on physical resistance, under the leadership of Mordechai Anielewicz, who was chosen by the communist and Zionist movements to lead the resistance in Warsaw.
