    Abstract: "What paths did true believers take to Nazism? Why did they join what was initially a small, extremist, and often violent movement on the fringes of German politics? When the party began its election campaigning after 1925, why did people vote for it only grudgingly, though in the Great Depression years, make it the largest in the country? Even then, many millions withheld their support, as they would, if covertly, in the Third Reich. Were the recruits simply converted by hearing a spell-binding Hitler speech? Or did they find their own way to National Socialism? How was this all-embracing theory applied in the Third Reich after 1933 and into the catastrophic war years? To what extent did people internalize or consume the doctrine of National Socialism, or reject it? In the first half of the book I examine how ordinary people became Nazis, or at least supported the party and voted for it in elections down to 1933. We need to remember, that Hitler squeaked into power with the help of those in positions of power who wanted to get rid of democracy, "forever." Into the Third Reich I trace how the regime applied its teachings to major domestic and foreign political events, racial persecution, and cultural developments, including in art and architecture, and how people reacted or behaved in that context. This story begins with a focus on Hitler. Like millions of others after Germany's lost war, he was psychologically adrift, searching for answers, and some kind of political salvation. How did he find the tiny fringe group, the German Workers' Party (DAP), that he and a few others transformed in 1920 into the imposing-sounding National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), or Nazi Party? Insofar as Hitler had fixed ideas at the end of the Great War in 1918, high on the list was nationalism, in spite of the aspersions cast against it by mutinous sailors and rebellious soldiers tired of the fighting. Some aspects of what became his doctrine or ideology, stemmed from the cluster of ideas, resentments, and passions widely shared in Germany at that time. His views and those of his comrades also reflected the fact that Germany was already a nation with a great deal of egalitarianism baked into its political culture. Almost without exception, the Nazis emphasized all kinds of socialist attitudes, to be sure a socialism "cleansed" of international Marxism and communism.     Abstract: Das Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs brachte den Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus die lang ersehnte Befreiung. Vor 75 Jahren atmeten in Hamburg Frauen und Männer aus ganz Europa in Zwangsarbeitslagern und anderen Haftstätten auf. Tausende Häftlinge des KZ Neuengamme waren kurz vor der Ankunft der britischen Truppen aus der Stadt gebracht worden. Sie erlebten ihre Befreiung an vielen verschiedenen Orten. Wie erging es ihnen in den Wochen und Monaten danach? Viele hatten den nationalsozialistischen Terror nur um Haaresbreite überlebt, waren ausgezehrt, schwer krank und besaßen nur noch, was sie auf dem Leib trugen. Wo konnten sie Essen und medizinische Versorgung erhalten? Wie sollten sie nach Hause kommen? Hatten sie überhaupt noch ein zu Hause? Und waren ihre Angehörigen noch am Leben? Manche, die vor dem Nichts standen, versuchten einen Neuanfang durch die Auswanderung in ein anderes Land. Die Rückkehr in ein "normales" Leben war für viele Überlebende ein schwieriger Prozess. Auch für verfolgte Hamburgerinnen und Hamburger bedeutete die Befreiung nicht zwangsläufig ein Ende der Not.

    Abstract: "The conceit in the title of this volume is that ritual, however expansively it may be defined, is ineluctably tethered to religion and worship. It has a primal connection to the idea that a transcendent order - numinous and mysterious, supranatural and elusive, divine and wholly other - gives meaning and purpose to life. The construction of rites and rituals enables humans to conceive and apprehend this transcendent order, to symbolize it and interact with it, to postulate its truths in the face of contradicting realities and to repair them when they have been breached or diminished. The focus of this Handbook is on ritual and worship from the perspective of biblical studies, particularly on the Hebrew Bible and its ancient Near Eastern antecedents. The volume reflects a wide range of analytical approaches to ancient texts, inscriptions, iconography, and ritual artifacts. It examines the social history and cultural knowledge encoded in rituals, and explores the way rituals shape and are shaped by politics, economics, ethical imperatives, and religion itself.     Abstract: Building on the success of the Jewish Annotated New Testament (JANT) and the Jewish Study Bible (JSB), Oxford University Press now proceeds to complete the trilogy with the Jewish Annotated Apocrypha (JAA). The books of the Apocrypha were virtually all composed by Jewish writers in the Second Temple period. Excluded from the Hebrew Bible, these works were preserved by Christians. Yet no complete, standalone edition of these works has been produced in English with an emphasis on Jewish tradition or with an educated Jewish audience in mind. The JAA meets this need. The JAA differs from prior editions of the Apocrypha in a number of ways. First, as befits a Jewish Annotated Apocrypha, the volume excludes certain texts that are widely agreed to be of Christian origin. Second, it expands the scope of the volume to include Jubilees, an essential text for understanding ancient Judaism, and a book that merits inclusion in the volume by virtue of the fact that it was long considered part of the canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (the text is also revered by Ethiopian Jews). Third, it has restructured the order of the books so that the sequencing follows the logic that governs the order of the books in the Jewish canon (Law, History, Prophecy, Wisdom and Poetry). Using the NRSV translation (plus Jubilees), each book of the Apocrypha is annotated by a recognized expert in the study of ancient Judaism. An Introduction by the editors guides readers though the making of the volume and its contents. Thematic essays by an impressive array of scholars provide helpful contexts, backgrounds and elaborations on key themes

    Abstract: Biblische Frauen werden in der jüdischen Tradition vielfältig rezipiert. Das wird zunächst an einzelnen Frauenfiguren wie Sara, Eva, Ester, Judit und der "tüchtigen Frau" aus dem Buch der Sprichwörter aufgezeigt. Eine besondere Rolle kommt dem Hohelied zu, das nicht nur in der mittelalterlichen Exegese rezipiert wird, sondern ebenso in Gedichten aus Andalusien. Hier wurden auch Ester oder Zion als Frau auf kunstvolle Weise verarbeitet und Theologie, Liturgie und Lyrik, aber auch Judentum und Islam kamen ins Gespräch. In einem anderen geografischen Raum, bei den am Rhein ansässigen aschkenasischen Chassiden, werden weibliche Figuren der Bibel zu Modellen für die eigene ethisch-moralische und theologische Orientierung. Von großer Bedeutung in dieser Zeit ist die jüdische Mystik, in welcher der weibliche Aspekt der Gottheit betont wird.

    Abstract: "Michael A. Daise identifies literary features found in six quotations in the Fourth Gospel, suggesting they should be revisited as clusters rather than as discrete units. Three quotations are the only ones whose introductory formulae explicitly ascribe them to Isaiah; three are the only ones cast as being 'remembered' by Jesus' disciples; and each of these groupings forms an inclusio within the Book of Signs which, when combined with the other, produces a chiasmus to Jesus' public ministry. Daise examines these clusters in three studies, addressing their exegetical issues and theological implications. After an introductory apologia for an historical-critical and theological approach, the first two studies distil narrative themes embedded in the Isaianic and 'remembrance' inclusios. The third study then reconstructs the synthesis of these themes created by the chiasmus, and translates its key elements into theological categories. Daise concludes that, while the Isaianic inclusio brings 'closure' to the Book of Signs ́€"by disclosing the angelic cause of the Jews' unbelief ́€" the 'remembrance' inclusio creates an anticipation of the Book of Glory ́€" by casting Jesus as poised to establish a new dynasty with the casting out that angelic cause. Daise further argues that this broader storyline carries ramifications for an array of motifs in the Fourth Gospel's theological taxonomy: in particular its christology, soteriology, eschatology, ecclesiology and pneumatology."--

Ranging from the Farhi Codex, copied and illuminated in the late 14th century, to the Philadelphia Bible, copied and illuminated in Lisbon in 1496, this volume discusses a wide scope of topics related with the production, consumption and circulation of medieval decorated Hebrew manuscripts.     Abstract: "Ein Zionist schreibt mit außergewöhnlicher Beobachtungsgabe über den Häftlingsalltag im Ungarnlager des KZ Bergen-Belsen. Jeno Kolbs in ungarischer Sprache verfasstes Tagebuch zählt zu den umfangreichsten Häftlingstagebüchern aus dem Konzentrationslager Bergen-Belsen. Zugleich stellt es als eines von wenigen Tagebüchern die Struktur, das Verhalten und die Zukunftserwartungen der Häftlingsgesellschaft aus einer dezidiert zionistischen Perspektive dar. Neben der Schilderung der sich stetig verschlechternden Lebensbedingungen im KZ Bergen-Belsen von Juli bis Dezember 1944 bietet es bemerkenswerte Einblicke in die unterschiedlichsten Formen der Selbstbehauptung der Häftlinge im sogenannten Ungarnlager. Hier waren fast 1700 Juden aus Ungarn interniert, die schließlich dank der Verhandlungen zwischen ungarischen Zionisten (vertreten vor allem durch Rezso Kasztner) und der SS bis Ende 1944 freigelassen wurden. Kolbs Tagebuch beschreibt auch eine der erfolgreichsten Rettungsaktionen in der Geschichte des Holocaust. Es wird - im ungarischen Original und in deutscher Übersetzung -erstmals veröffentlicht. Die Essays zum historischen Hintergrund des Tagebuchs sind ebenfalls in deutscher und ungarischer Sprache verfasst." (Verlagsinformation)

    Abstract: 2005 wurde das Holocaust-Mahnmal im Herzen Berlins der Öffentlichkeit über­geben. 60 Jahre nach 1945 hatte sich gegen mehrheitliche »Schlussstrich«- Forderungen mühsam ein weitgehender Konsens über die Notwendigkeit des öffentlichen Gedenkens entwickelt. Heute wird dieser von weit rechts infrage gestellt wie nie zuvor seit den 1950er Jahren. Dass die Erinnerung so umkämpft ist, hängt auch mit der NS-Ideologie und ihrer Verankerung in der deutschen Gesellschaft zusammen. Es war die quasireligiöse Faszination für eine neue Herrschaft nach den Krisen der Weimarer Republik, die große Teile der Bevölkerung zum Mitmachen bewegt hat – bis hin zum apokalyp­tischen Vernichtungskrieg. Was dieser Krieg für die Opfer bedeutet, zeigen Aussagen von Holocaust-Überlebenden, in denen ihre ganz besondere Erinnerung deutlich wird. »Eindringlich und anschaulich analysiert Hajo Funke den Nationalsozialismus. Indem er Adolf Hitler als gelehrigen Schüler des Komponisten Richard Wagner ausweist, zeigt er das NS-Regime als ein perfides, die Massen betörendes ›Gesamtkunstwerk‹. Denn es ging um eine politische Religion, die Religion einer Erlösung durch Massenmord – um, wie Saul Friedländer sagte, ›Erlösungsantisemitismus‹.     Abstract: "This volume examines numerous Hebrew wordplays not identified and discussed in previous research, and the technique of the Septuagint translators, by offering another criterion of evaluation - essentially, their concern about the style of translating Hebrew into Greek. Elizabeth Backfish's study analyzes seventy-four wordplays employed by the Hebrew poets of Psalms 90-106, and how the Septuagint renders Hebrew wordplay in Greek. Backfish estimates that the Septuagint translators were able to render 31% of the Hebrew semantic and phonetic wordplays (twenty-four total), most of which required some sort of transformation, or change, to the text in order to function in Greek. After providing a thorough summary of research methods on wordplay, definitions and research methodology, Backfish summarizes all examples of wordplay within the Fourth Psalter, and concludes with examples of the wordplay's replication, similar rendition or textual variation in the Septuagint. Emphasising the creativity and ingenuity of the Septuagint translators' work in passages that commentators often too quickly identify as the results of scribal error or a variant Vorlage from the Masoretic text, Backfish shows how the aptitude and flexibility displayed in the translation technique also contributes to conversations in modern translation studies."--Bloomsbury Publishing

Sophie Schönberger entfaltet in ihrem Buch die These, dass dieses Zurückgeben nur als bewusste vergangenheitspolitische Maßnahme eingesetzt werden kann, die einer aktiven narrativen Einbettung auf der Seite der Zurückgebenden bedarf.     Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Die wichtigsten Quellen über die Faszination der Hitler-Bewegung sind 1938 in den USA erschienen, aber bis heute nicht in Deutschland. Theodore Abel (*1896), amerikanischer Soziologe polnischer Herkunft, schreibt 1934 in Abstimmung mit NS-Propagandaminister Joseph Goebbels ein Preisausschreiben aus, bei dem es 18 Preise zwischen 125 und 10 Reichsmark zu gewinnen gibt. "Der Zweck des Wettbewerbs ist die Sammlung von Material über die Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus, sodass das amerikanische Publikum sich aus realen, persönlichen Geschichten darüber informieren kann." Familiäre Herkunft und der Bildungsweg sollen ebenso geschildert werden wie der Weg zum Nationalsozialismus. Es kommt nicht auf literarische Qualität an, aber es gibt einen klaren Ausschlussgrund: wer lügt, der fliegt. Die Berichte müssen ehrlich und vertrauenswürdig sein. Es kommen 683 zusammen. Dieses Buch versammelt eine alle Bevölkerungsschichten umfassende Auswahl der aussagekräftigsten Berichte. Wiederkehrende Motive der Biogramme sind angeschlagener Nationalstolz; die Angst vor sozialem Abstieg; die Sorge, nicht vorwärts kommen zu können; Hass auf Kommunisten und Wut auf das Grosskapital. Dagegen steht der Glaube an die Volksgemeinschaft und die Hoffnung auf den Führer, den Erlöser. Antisemitismus kommt überraschend wenig vor. Diese einzigartige Sammlung von unschätzbarem Erkenntniswert ist Grundlage der Dokumentation "Hitler - wie konnte es geschehen" im Berlin Story Bunker

Rezension: Der 11-jährige Oswald Kernberg, ein jüdisches Kind aus Wien, wird 1939 durch einen Kindertransport nach Frankreich und 1941 weiter in die USA gerettet. 2003 besucht er nunmehr als Arthur Kern zusammen mit seiner Frau die ehemalige elterliche Wohnung in Wien und freundet sich mit der 11-jährigen Lilly an, der er in den folgenden Jahren seine Lebensgeschichte erzählt. Als spätere Historikerin und Mitarbeiterin in der Gedenkstätte Dachau ist sie als Expertin für die französischen Kindertransporte die Autorin dieses Buches, das auf seinen Berichten und eigenen Recherchen beruht. - Mit ihrer Geschichte zweier Leben ist ihr eine überzeugende Verbindung von exakter Dokumentation und gut lesbarer journalistischer Schreibweise gelungen, menschlich berührend und spannend zugleich.     Abstract: Aus der Tagungsankündigung: Die Frage nach dem Umgang mit „treuhänderisch“ verwahrtem Kulturgut bzw. Raubgut betrifft Bibliotheken, Archive und Museen sowie jüdische Institutionen. Während die gängigen Erwerbungsarten in Kultureinrichtungen, wie Kauf, Geschenk, Pflicht und Tausch übliche Geschäftsvorgänge darstellen und im Rahmen der NS-Provenienzforschung kritisch untersucht werden, sind mit Auflagen versehene Übernahmen und Verwahrungen, wie Treuhand, Leihgaben oder Legaten aber auch staatliche Zuweisungen im Kontext von NS-Kulturgutraub und staatlichen Transformationsprozessen bislang wenig beachtet worden. Ausgehend von der Frage, wie bislang in Bibliotheken, Archiven und Museen mit „treuhänderisch“ übernommenen Kulturgütern umgegangen wurde, werden BibliothekarInnen, HistorikerInnen, Sammlungsbeauftragte und RechtsexpertInnen aus dem In- und Ausland eingeladen, strukturierte Vorgehensweisen zu erörtern und die Anforderungen, Chancen und Grenzen eines adäquaten Umgangs mit illegitim erworbenen Objekten im Rahmen einer „treuhänderischen Übernahme“ interdisziplinär zu diskutieren.

    Abstract: Das Buch widmet sich Hitlers Verteilungsprogramm eingezogener Kunstsammlungen, das der Diktator nach dem „Anschluss“ Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich 1938 für die „Ostmark“ auflegte und auf das gesamte Großdeutsche Reich auszuweiten vorsah. Nach einer ersten Phase divergierender Konzepte übernahm im Juni 1939 Hitler selbst die Leitung des Projekts. Danach führten sein Sonderbeauftragter Hans Posse und dessen Assistent Gottfried Reimer, unterstützt von der Wiener Denkmalbehörde, die Verteilung von 5000 hochrangigen Kunstwerken aus jüdischem Besitz durch. Vor dem Hintergrund einer Situation, die von scharfer Konkurrenz zwischen Wien und den ostmärkischen Reichsgauen, dem Aufbau des „Führermuseums“ in Linz und den Erwartungen der Museen im „Altreich“ geprägt war, wird Hitlers Profil als Museumspolitiker sichtbar.

    Abstract: In The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism , Vroom identifies a development in the authority of written law that took place in early Judaism. Ever since Assyriologists began to recognize that the Mesopotamian law collections did not function as law codes do today—as a source of binding obligation—scholars have grappled with the question of when the Pentateuchal legal corpora came to be treated as legally binding. Vroom draws from legal theory to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the nature of legal authority, and develops a methodology for identifying instances in which legal texts were treated as binding law by ancient interpreters. This method is applied to a selection of legal-interpretive texts: Ezra-Nehemiah, Temple Scroll, the Qumran rule texts, and the Samaritan Pentateuch

Rezension: Der Autor, der 2011 als erster Vertreter der Sinti und Roma vor dem Deutschen Bundestag sprach, erzählt hier die Geschichte seines Lebens. Geboren 1937, erlebte Weisz die Verfolgung durch die Nazis ("Der nationalsozialistische Völkermord", 2004), der er anders als seine Eltern und Geschwister knapp entkam, in den Niederlanden, wo er nach dem Krieg ein anerkannter Florist und Blumenhändler wurde. Gleichzeitig begann er, für die Rechte der Sinti und Roma einzutreten und die Erinnerung an ihre Verfolgung einzufordern. Weisz' knapp illustriertes Buch spiegelt die schwierige Geschichte seines Volkes im 20. Jahrhundert, ist aber weder Kampfschrift noch Klagelied. Er blickt mit Stolz auf das zurück, was er beruflich erreicht hat, und was ihm, trotz vieler Rückschläge, als Anerkennung bei seinem internationalen Einsatz für sein Volk zuteil wurde. Mit einfachen Worten erweckt seine lebendige Erzählung ohne in analytische Tiefen zu gehen Verständnis für die Geschichte und die kulturellen Eigenheiten der Sinti und Roma. Im Anhang Familienstammbaum, kurzer Geschichtsabriss, sehr knappe Bibliografie. (2)

    Abstract: "Notions of women as found in the Bible have had an incalculable impact on Western cultures, influencing perspectives on marriage, kinship, legal practice, political status, and general attitudes. Women and Exile is drawn from three separate strands to address and analyse this phenomenon. The first examines how women were conceptualized and represented during the exilic period. The second focuses on methodological possibilities and drawbacks connected to investigating women and exile. The third reviews current prominent literature on the topic, with responses from authors. With chapters from a range of contributors, topics move from an analysis of Ruth as a woman returning to her homeland, and issues concerning the foreign presence who brings foreign family members into the midst of a community, and how this is dealt with, through the intermarriage crisis portrayed in Ezra 9-10, to an analysis of Judean constructions of gender in the exilic and early post-exilic periods.
