Abstract:
Discusses the significance of Holocaust education against the background of historiographic research, emphasizing the importance of democracy, tolerance, and humaneness, which should ensure that a recurrence of the violation of human rights to the extent of the Holocaust will not occur again. Proposes different studies, based on their didactic relevance. One focuses on the view of the spectator, which would suit the majority of the population. States that the fact of being privy to the events is one of the essential indicators of a genocidal society. Emphasizes, also, the role of accomplices and of perpetrators. Mentions Saul Friedländer's study, which focuses on the history of the Jews, not of the Germans. According to Brumlik, concern for the victims is not a matter of identification or empathy, but an insight into the dignity of the human being, a moral feeling which serves as a condition and a goal of pedagogic work at once. Regarding the pedagogic conveyance of knowledge on the Holocaust, which is considered historical-political education, the importance of methodology is emphasized, enabling a close connection between history and the present.
