    Abstract: Arguments over the relationship between Canaanite and Israelite religion often derive from fundamental differences in presupposition, methodology and definition, yet debate typically focuses in on details and encourages polarization between opposing views, inhibiting progress. This volume seeks to initiate a cultural change in scholarly practice by setting up dialogues between pairs of experts in the field who hold contrasting views. Each pair discusses a clearly defined issue through the lens of a particular biblical passage, responding to each other’s arguments and offering their reflections on the process. Topics range from the apparent application of ‘chaos’ and ‘divine warrior’ symbolism to Yahweh in Habakkuk 3, the evidence for ‘monotheism’ in pre-Exilic Judah in 2 Kings 22–23, and the possible presence of ‘chaos’ or creatio ex nihilo in Genesis 1 and Psalm 74. This approach encourages the recognition of points of agreement as well as differences and exposes some of the underlying issues that inhibit consensus. In doing so, it consolidates much that has been achieved in the past, offers fresh ideas and perspective and, through intense debate, subjects new ideas to thorough critique and suggests avenues for further research

    Abstract: This volume is written in the context of trauma hermeneutics of ancient Jewish communities and their tenacity in the face of adversity (i.e. as recorded in the MT, LXX, Pseudepigrapha, the Deuterocanonical books and even Cognate literature. In this regard, its thirteen chapters, are concerned with the most recent outputs of trauma studies. They are written by a selection of leading scholars, associated to some degree with the Hungaro-South African Study Group. Here, trauma is employed as a useful hermeneutical lens, not only for interpreting biblical texts and the contexts in which they were originally produced and functioned but also for providing a useful frame of reference. As a consequence, these various research outputs, each in their own way, confirm that an historical and theological appreciation of these early accounts and interpretations of collective trauma and its implications, (perceived or otherwise), is critical for understanding the essential substance of Jewish cultural identity.     Abstract: Spirit possession is more commonly associated with late Second Temple Jewish literature and the New Testament than it is with the Hebrew Bible. In Unfamiliar Selves in the Hebrew Bible, however, Reed Carlson argues that possession is also depicted in this earlier literature, though rarely according to the typical western paradigm. This new approach utilizes theoretical models developed by cultural anthropologists and ethnographers of contemporary possession-practicing communities in the global south and its diasporas. Carlson demonstrates how possession in the Bible is a corporate and cultivated practice that can function as social commentary and as a means to model the moral self.The author treats a variety of spirit phenomena in the Hebrew Bible, including spirit language in the Psalms and Job, spirit empowerment in Judges and Samuel, and communal possession in the prophets. Carlson also surveys apotropaic texts and spirit myths in early Jewish literature—including the Dead Sea Scrolls. In this volume, two recent scholarly trends in biblical studies converge: investigations into notions of evil and of the self. The result is a synthesizing project, useful to biblical scholars and those of early Judaism and Christianity alike

    Abstract: Der Band thematisiert erstmals die Gattungsinterferenz zwischen Purimspielen und Fastnachtspielen. Der ungefähre zeitliche Zusammenfall des jüdischen Purim-Festes und der christlichen Fastnacht im liturgischen Jahreskreis sowie die jeweilige Performanz einer verkehrten Welt lassen nach wechselseitigen Beeinflussungen fragen. Im Einzelnen wurden jüdisch-christliche Berührungen in Brauchtum und Spiel für wichtige Spiellandschaften wie das Rheinland, die Schweiz, Schwaben oder Tirol in den Blick genommen. Dabei kristallisieren sich von Ort zu Ort trotz gemeinsamer Sujets unterschiedliche Formen des Ausagierens von interreligiösen Dialogen ab. Dennoch sind die performativen Parallelen, die hier erstmals dokumentiert werden, frappierend. Die interdisziplinären Beiträge des Sammelbandes verstehen sich nicht zuletzt als Anstoß für weitergehende Forschungen. In der Summe ergibt sich, dass Purim und Fastnacht von ihrem performativen Potenzial her im Alten Reich künftig nicht mehr unabhängig voneinander betrachtet werden dürfen. Der Sammelband wendet sich an Judaist/-innen, Theolog/-innen, Germanist/-innen, Ethnolog/-innen und Historiker/-innen mit der Ausrichtung auf Spätmittelalter und der Frühen Neuzeit.
    Abstract: The volume examines for the first time the intersection of genres between Purim plays and Shrovetide plays. The approximate temporal coincidence of the Jewish Purim festival and Christian Shrovetide in the liturgical calendar as well as the common enactment of a world turned upside-down suggest the possibility of mutual influences. The interdisciplinary essays are intended to stimulate further research.

    Abstract: Während es eine ganze Reihe großer, mitunter mehrbändiger wissenschaftlicher Wörterbücher zum biblischen Hebräisch und Aramäisch gibt, existieren nur sehr wenige Taschenwörterbücher, die Studierenden einen schnellen Überblick über die wichtigsten deutschen Übersetzungsäquivalente bieten, ohne dass diese sich zunächst einen umfangreichen Apparat zur Etymologie und zu Belegstellen erschließen müssen.Das neue HAW will die großen Wörterbücher nicht ersetzen, sondern eine handliche Begleitung beim Übersetzen sein. Indem es auch den hebräischen und aramäischen Wortschatz der Bücher Jesus Sirach und Tobit sowie der althebräischen Inschriften aufgenommen hat sowie indiziert, welche Lexeme auch in den hebräischen Texten von Qumran vorkommen, geht es weit über das sehr bewährte alte HAW hinaus. Dabei basiert es auf dem aktuellen Stand der gegenwärtigen Hebraistik. Das HAW ist geeignet für den Einsatz in Hebräischkursen, in Lektüreübungen zur Hebräischen Bibel und zum frühjüdischen Schrifttum, zum Selbststudium und zur Vorbereitung auf das Hebraicum. Für letzteres ist es besonders zu empfehlen, weil es eine gute Kenntnis der hebräischen Formenbildung voraussetzt und weil es keine Übersetzungen ganzer Passagen aus der Hebräischen Bibel bietet

    Abstract: Benjamin Veitel Ephraim (1742-1811) war ein wohlhabender Berliner Kaufmann, aber auch der erste jüdische Autor eines Dramas in deutscher Sprache. Er veröffentlichte politische Schriften und eine eindrucksvolle Autobiografie. Während der Französischen Revolution arbeitete er als Geheimagent Preußens in Paris.     Abstract: Die Publikation schlüsselt das Lebenswerk des Hebraisten Elias Hutter auf und ordnet es in den historischen Kontext ein.Im späten 16. Jahrhundert wollte Hutter das Studium des Hebräischen revolutionieren. Getragen von der Idee, dass das biblische Hebräisch als göttliche Ursprache den Weg zur Einheit von Sprache und Religion aufzeigt, entwickelte er neue didaktische Methoden zur Vereinfachung des Hebräischstudiums. Am Anfang seines Wirkens steht die 1587 in Hamburg veröffentlichte „Biblia Sacra – Derekh ha-Kodesh“. In dieser Edition der Hebräischen Bibel entwickelte er ein bis heute einzigartiges Druckbild, um die Morphologie des Hebräischen zu illustrieren. Weitere Arbeiten folgten, u.a. Lexika und Polyglotten, in denen Hutter das Sprachenstudium mit seiner These von der einheitsstiftenden göttlichen Ursprache verband. Sein Werk ist somit im Grenzbereich zwischen neuzeitlicher Sprachwissenschaft und religiöser Spekulation einzuordnen. Der historische Vergleich zeigt, dass er ein Vertreter der frühneuzeitlichen christlichen Hebraistik ist und kein „Phantast“ seiner Zeit war.Die Publikation führt nicht nur in Hutters Werk ein, sondern bietet zudem einen Überblick über Methoden und Konzeptionen der frühneuzeitlichen christlichen Hebraistik
    Abstract: Elias Hutter was interested in the unity of language and religion, about which he wrote an impressive magnum opus in the late sixteenth century. He believed that Hebrew, as the original divine language, was the answer to his question, and wanted to revolutionize its study. To do so, he developed new methods for language pedagogy in combination with theological concepts, which this publication introduces and places within their historic context

    Abstract: This is the first study to compare the allusions to scribal culture found in the Aramaic Story of Ahiqar and the Hebrew Tale of Jeremiah and Baruch’s Scroll in Jeremiah 36. It is shown that disguised in the royal propagandistic message of Ahiqar is a sophisticated Aramaic critique on the social practices of Akkadian scribal culture. Jeremiah 36, however, uses loci of scribal activity as well as allusions to scribal interactions and the techniques of the scribal craft to construct a subversive tale. When studied from a comparative perspective it is argued that the Story of Ahiqar, which has long been associated with the well-known court tale genre, is an example of a subgenre which is here called the scribal conflict narrative, and Jeremiah 36 is found to be a second example of or a response to it. This observation is arrived at by means of rigorous manuscript examination combined with narrative analysis, which identified, among other things, the development of autobiographical and biographical styles of the same ancient narrative. This study not only provides new perspectives on scribal culture, Ahiqar studies, and Jeremiah studies, but it may have far reaching implications for other ancient sources

    Abstract: This volume contains essays by some of the leading scholars in the study of the Jewish religious ideas in the Second Temple period, that led up to the development of early forms of Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity. Close attention is paid to the cosmological ideas to be found in the Ancient Near East and in the Hebrew Bible and to the manner in which the translators of the Hebrew Bible into Greek reflected the creativity with which Judaism engaged Hellenistic ideas about the cosmos and the creation. The concepts of heaven and divine power, human mortality, the forces of nature, combat myths, and the philosophy of wisdom, as they occur in 2 Maccabees, Ben Sira, Wisdom of Solomon and Tobit, are carefully analysed and compared with Greek and Roman world-views. There are also critical examinations of Dead Sea scroll texts, early Jewish prayers and Hebrew liturgical poetry and how they these adopt, adapt and alter earlier ideas. The editors have included appreciations of two major figures who played important roles in the study of the Second Temple period and in the history and development of the ISDCL, namely, Otto Kaiser and Alexander Di Lella, who died recently and are greatly missed by those in the field

    Abstract: This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture

    Abstract: Scholars of the Hebrew Bible used to look at "Prophecy" and "Wisdom" as clearly distinct realms represented by antagonistic and mutually exclusive roles of their central characters: the loyal sage, the pillar of administration, on the one side and the rebellious prophet, criticizing the establishment, on the other. While the influence of wisdom thought on prophetic texts has been a topic in the scholarly debate, the complementary question of the influence of prophetic thought on wisdom texts has rarely been asked. The contributions in this volume look at both questions: They start from the assumption that texts from the Hebrew Bible and the cultures surrounding Ancient Israel all originated from a social stratum of educated scribes, who authored and transmitted these texts. It then seems plausible that wisdom texts might show similar traces of prophetic influence to those of wisdom thoughts found in prophetic texts. The essays give a multifaceted picture concerning the mutual perception of prophets and sages and thus provide a deeper understanding of both wisdom literature and prophecy

    Abstract: Precarious Figurations focuses on the reception of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Germany. Looking at theatrical practices and critical or scholarly discourses from the Weimar Republic to the new millennium, the book explores why the play has served simultaneously as a vehicle for the actualization of anti-Semitic tropes and as a staging ground for the critical exposure of the very logic of anti-Semitism. In particular, the study investigates how the figure of Shylock has come to be both a device in and a stumbling block for attempts to bridge the fundamental rupture in civilization brought about by the Holocaust. The careful analysis of the German reception of Merchant, and in particular of the ways of doing and reading Shylock in the context of painful German, and German-Jewish, discourses of identity and remembrance, is designed to raise fundamental questions – questions concerning not only the staging of Jewishness, the tenacity of anti-Semitism and the difficulties of Holocaust remembrance, but also the general potentials and limitations of theatrical interventions into cultural conflicts

    Abstract: In his literary texts, which remained mostly unpublished, Gustav Landauer (1870-1919) anticipated the linguistically skeptical ideas of his time. In new intertextual, intermedial and muted writing styles, he confronts the inadequacy of language in a creative manner. Through his entanglements with works of German literature and music, the Jewish author Landauer wrote himself into German culture. The presentation and analysis of all literary texts provides an important contribution to both research on Landauer and the study of cultural and social functions of intermediality and intertextuality.
    Abstract: In seinen größtenteils unveröffentlichten literarischen Texten nimmt Gustav Landauer (1870?1919) sprachskeptische Gedanken seiner Zeit voraus. In neuen intertextuellen, intermedialen und schweigenden Schreibweisen begegnet er der Unzulänglichkeit von Sprache kreativ. Durch Verschränkungen mit Werken deutscher Literatur und Musik schreibt der jüdische Autor Landauer sich zudem in die deutsche Kultur ein. Die Darstellung und Analyse aller literarischen Texte leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Landauer-Forschung, aber auch zum Studium der kulturellen und sozialen Funktionen von Intermedialität und Intertextualität.

    Abstract: After 1933, New York City gave shelter to many leading German and German-Jewish intellectuals. Stripped of their German citizenship by the Nazi-regime, these public figures either stayed in the New York area or moved on to California and other places. This compendium, adopting the title of a famous volume published by Klaus and Erika Mann in 1939, explores the impact the US, and NYC in particular, had on these authors as well as the influence they in turn exerted on US intellectual life. Moreover, it addresses the transformations that took place in the exiled intellectuals’ thinking when it was translated into another language and addressed to an American audience. Among the individuals presented in this volume, are such prominent names as T.W. Adorno, H. Arendt, W. Benjamin, E. Bloch, B. Brecht, S. Kracauer, the Mann family, S. Morgenstern, and E. Panofsky. The authors of the essays in this compendium were free to choose the angle (biography, theory, politics) or aspect (a single work, a personal constellation) deemed best to illuminate the given intellectual’s work. Acclaimed NYC photographer Fred Stein, a German-Jewish refugee from Dresden, produced numerous portraits of exiled intellectuals and artists.     Abstract: This volume is comprised of 14 contributions, which are revised and expanded versions of lectures held at an international conference on Stefan Zweig that took place in Israel in 2004. The essays focus on Zweig's biographical writings (for example Erasmus and Fouché), as well as on several aspects of his literary works that have been neglected since the revival of academic studies of his writings and career commenced some 25 years ago. These include: Zweig's conception of the daemonic, Zweig and Christianity, the discourse of love in his writings, Zweig as an Austrian eulogist, his understanding of theater, etc. Contributors from Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, and Israel bring refreshingly diverse perspectives and new concerns to this scholarly project.

    Abstract: This is a study of one of the few prose texts by an author much better known for his poetry. It is inspired by Celan's remark that »Gespräch im Gebirg« was written "in memory of an encounter that never happened." Instead of taking the conventional course and treating this remark as a reference to Adorno, the author examines the poetological implications behind it. Though hermetic at first glance, the text yields up a surprising number of its apparent enigmas when subjected to close reading, poetological analysis, intertextual comparison with texts by Adorno, and reference to letters recently published for the first time.

They are marked by the quest for identity embarked on by Jewish intellectuals in the 20th century. Exiled in America after the Shoah, Morgenstern turned away from Christian Europe, attributing to it the religious blame for the Holocaust. "Die Blutsäule" is, however, written in idiosyncratic German, with many reminiscences of the language of the Bible. Given that this was also the language of the 'hated' perpetrators of the Holocaust, the complexion of the novel is intricate indeed. The study reconstructs its religious, historical, and literary background.

Die Romane wurden von Rabbinern, Lehrern und anderen Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens verfasst und in den großen jüdischen Zeitungen veröffentlicht, bevor sie in Buchform erschienen. Sie erfreuten sich großer Beliebtheit besonders bei jugendlichen Lesern. Obwohl nationale Aspekte der jüdischen Geschichte sorgsam ausgespart wurden, ermöglichten die behandelten Themen und Helden dem jüdischen Publikum, auf die eigene Geschichte stolz zu sein. Durch ihre hebräische Übersetzung bzw. Neugestaltung unterstützten diese Romane die jüdisch-nationale Erweckungsbewegung in Osteuropa und Israel.
    Abstract: The 19th century German-Jewish historical novel was born of the need to supply readers with popular novels, a novelty in Jewish literature. Through the back door it provided a chance to update images of Jews and Judaism and rewrite Jewish history according to the ideological needs of the main participants in the struggle out of the Ghetto. Rabbis, teachers and community leaders wrote novels that first appeared in the main papers, the "AZJ" and "Der Israelit". The novels enjoyed great popularity, especially among youth. Though they rejected any national aspect of Jewish history, the very choice of themes and heroes enhanced national pride. They were translated/adapted into Hebrew and played a major role in the national awakening in Eastern Europe and in Israel.

    Abstract: After 1933, on a scale hitherto largely unreflected in literary research, German exiles engaged with the phenomenon of National Socialist anti-Semitism. This engagement ranged from the collection of documents to the 'dialectics of enlightenment'. The study reconstructs this historical discourse with special reference to the way it is reflected in the Zeitstück genre (topical dramas on pressing contemporary issues). In the process it inquires into the extent to which the dramatic genre imposes formal aesthetic constraints that involve a restriction of theoretical interest in anti-Semitism to a small number of constantly recurring motifs.
    Abstract: In einer bislang von der Forschung kaum beachteten Breite haben sich nach 1933 deutsche Exilanten mit dem nationalsozialistischen Antisemitismus auseinandergesetzt - von der Dokumentensammlung bis zur »Dialektik der Aufklärung«. Die Studie rekonstruiert diesen historischen Diskurs, insbesondere soweit er die literarische Form des Zeitstücks angenommen hat. Erörtert wird dabei, inwieweit diese dramatische Gattung ästhetische Formvorgaben aufweist, die das theoretische Interesse am Antisemitismus auf einige wenige, immer wiederkehrende Motive beschränken.

    Abstract: This volume examines the Jewish identity of the Austrian writers and thinkers Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Richard Beer-Hofmann, Karl Kraus, and Theodor Herzl in the cultural context of the Austrian fin de siècle and the cultural crisis that went with it. All of them drew more or less consciously on a rich Jewish heritage, which they either turned away from (Kraus, Zweig) or sought a new rapprochement with (Beer-Hofmann, Herzl). The dynamic tensions resulting from the interplay between the absorption of Austrian culture, on the one hand, and the imprint of century-old Jewish traditions and values on the other find their expression in the different responses of these Austrian-Jewish personalities to the culture and cultural crisis of the fin de siècle. As such they can be considered paradigmatic for the situation of all European Jews.

    Abstract: In the eight decades after the 1830s, ghetto literature became the most important genre in the development of Jewish literature in German. In its first section, this documentation outlines the reception accorded to the genre up to the early 1930s with reference to and commentaries on over 600 sources. The second section facilitates access to the primary texts by providing an annotated bibliography, brief biographies of the just under 100 mostly Jewish authors of ghetto literature, and indexes of names and subject matter.

    Abstract: Dieser Band, herausgegeben von der Universität Yale zu Ehren von Professor Jeffrey L. Sammons aus Anlass seiner Emeritierung, stellt eine Serie prägnanter Essays über deutsch-jüdische Literatur und Kulturgeschichte von der Aufklärung bis zum Aufkommen des Nationalsozialismus dar. Entscheidende jüdische Persönlichkeiten wie Heinrich Heine, Ludwig Börne, Rahel Varnhagen, Berthold Auerbach, Arthur Schnitzler, Franz Kafka und Jacob Wassermann, werden vor einem neuen interessanten wissenschaftlichen Hintergrund betrachtet. Auch deutsche Schriftsteller und Persönlichkeiten wie G. E. Lessing, Goethe, Grillparzer, Jean Paul, Julius Langbehn, Houston Stewart Chamberlain und viele andere werden bei der Betrachtung der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur und Kulturgeschichte dieser Epoche einbezogen.
    Abstract: This volume, edited in honour of Professor Jeffrey L. Sammons of Yale University on the occasion of his retirement, presents a series of incisive essays on German-Jewish literary and cultural history from the Enlightenment until the rise of Nazism. Key Jewish figures, including Heinrich Heine, Ludwig Börne, Rahel Varnhagen, Berthold Auerbach, Arthur Schnitzler, Franz Kafka, and Jacob Wassermann, are considered in excitingly new scholarly frameworks. Also German writers and personalities, like G. E. Lessing, Goethe, Grillparzer, Jean Paul, Julius Langbehn, Houston Stewart Chamberlain and many more, are included in diverse discussions of German-Jewish literary and cultural history of this period.

    Abstract: In the first third of the 20th century, Georg Hermann (1871-1943) was an internationally well-known and popular author. His gentle irony and the bitter-sweet cachet of his atmospheric descriptions have remained uniquely distinctive. Both in his novels and in his political and aesthetic writings, he documents the slow artistic and intellectual change that took place in the first half of the 20th century. The articles in this volume examine Hermann's achievement as a novelist, a chronicler of life in Berlin, a critic of art and literature, and an observer of the German-Jewish response to life.

    Abstract: The analysis of exile literature in the articles of this volume focuses on the Jewish experience of exile, thus giving the subject a profound, 2,500-year depth and a corresponding variety of strategies for coming to terms with the experience of exile. At the same time, this perspective broadens the perspective on the phenomenon of exile literature to include the tensions between 'exile and homecoming'. The essays discuss German, Hebrew, and French exile literature, with the emphasis on the 20th century.

    Abstract: Thomas Mann's (1875-1955) engagement with contemporary Jews and his epic portrayals of them trace the ups and downs of history and reveal them as such. In his work, the Jews are given a key role in the debates of the 20th century. From Naphta and Krokowski in »The Magic Mountain« and Joseph and Moses there are connecting links and analogies between Germans and Jews, all the way up to Fitelberg and Breisacher in »Doctor Faustus«. The chronological treatment foregrounds both continuity and change in Mann's views, the mixture of fascination and prejudice they reveal, and their ongoing differentiation and refinement. The study (first published in French in 1995) deepens our awareness of the structural unity of Mann's oeuvre and makes a contribution to research on mentalities.

    Abstract: By illustrating the quintessentially different self-perceptions of three contemporary German writers of Jewish background, this book examines a range of German-Jewish identities in a socio-cultural context in Wilhelmine Germany. Its recognition of the ways in which the individual's cultural identity - Moritz Goldstein's (1880-1977) cultural Zionism, Julius Bab's (1880-1955) synthesis of 'Deutschtum' and 'Judentum' and Ernst Lissauer's (1882-1937) advocacy of complete assimilation - was constantly refashioned in response to the challenges of increasing anti-Semitism, enables one to reach a fuller understanding of the evolving self-perception of German Jews.
    Abstract: Indem es die im Wesentlichen unterschiedlichen Selbstwahrnehmungen von drei zeitgenössischen deutschen Schriftstellern jüdischer Abstammung aufzeigt, untersucht dieses Buch eine Reihe deutsch-jüdischer Persönlichkeiten in einem sozio-kulturellen Kontext im wilhelminischen Deutschland. Die Erkenntnis der Art und Weise, wie die kulturelle Identität des Individuums - Moritz Goldsteins (1880-1977) kultureller Zionismus, Julius Babs (1880-1955) Synthese von "Deutschtum" und "Judentum" und Ernst Lissauers (1882-1937) Befürwortung der vollständigen Assimilation - sich als Reaktion auf die Herausforderungen des zunehmenden Antisemitismus ständig wandelte, ermöglicht dem Leser, ein besseres Verständnis der sich entwickelnden Selbstwahrnehmung der deutschen Juden zu erlangen.

    Abstract: Zwischen 1933 und 1938 entstand in Deutschland eine vielfältige und von den Nationalsozialisten geduldete jüdische Literatur, die den deutschen Juden als ein Mittel der Selbstvergewisserung diente und sich nicht selten als Handlungsanleitung anbot. Gestützt auf erzählende Literatur macht die Untersuchung in einer ausführlichen Übersicht und in Einzelanalysen ein literarisches Leben sichtbar, das einerseits die Bandbreite der innerjüdischen Diskussion widerspiegelt und sich andererseits im Widerspruch gegen die entwürdigenden Zumutungen der nichtjüdischen Umwelt behauptet.

    Abstract: The volume is a contribution to the history of the Jews in medieval Europe and seeks to achieve more precise purchase on this complex culture-historical process by concentrating on one specific element of it. The articles analyze literary testimonies in German from the 12th to the 17th centuries written from a Christian perspective and containing images of Jews, their religion, their mentality, and recommendations for dealings between Christians and Jews. At the same time, the preconditions and the impact of these literary constructs are discussed against the backdrop of relevant research from the fields of theology and social history.

Diese stellen nicht nur aufgrund ihrer Anzahl, Kontinuität und ihres über mehr als 50 Jahre reichenden Entstehungszeitraumes (1880-1931) ein Unikum dar. Sie sind Ausdruck einer intensiven und vielfältigen Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Zugehörigkeit zum Judentum, zu Österreich und zur deutschen Kultur und zählen zu den damals seltenen Zeugnissen für eine permanente Hellhörigkeit gegenüber jeglichen antisemitischen Tendenzen.
    Abstract: This study is the first to essay a systematic examination of the statements made by turn-of-the-century Viennese author Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) on Judaism and anti-Semitism. They are unique from various points of view, including their number, their continuity, and the long stretch of time they extend over (1880-1931). Over and above that, they are the expression of an intensive and many-sided engagement with Schnitzler's own Jewishness, with Austria, and with German culture. Further, they are remarkable for their seismographic sensitivity to anti-Semitic tendencies of any kind, a quality that was anything but widespread at the time.

    Abstract: For a long time Moses Mendelssohn's (1729-1786) »Jerusalem« was one of the neglected works of the German Enlightenment period. Only in recent years has it started to be given the critical attention it merits, albeit almost exclusively from the perspective of the history of emancipation and of minorities. The present study examines the work in terms of the history of ideas and places it in the context of contemporaneous European thought, demonstrating that in it Mendelssohn presents a highly innovative angle on the issue of human rights and the possibility of pluralistic societies.
    Abstract: Moses Mendelssohns (1729-1786) »Jerusalem« gehörte lange zu den vergessenen Texten der deutschen Aufklärung. Erst in letzter Zeit ist er wieder in das Blickfeld der Forschung gerückt - freilich fast ausschließlich unter emanzipations- und minderheitengeschichtlichen Fragestellungen. Dass Mendelssohn auch ein hochinnovatives Votum zur Menschenrechtsfrage und zur Möglichkeit pluralistischer Gesellschaften vorlegt, wird in dieser Studie ideengeschichtlich rekonstruiert und im europäischen Denkhorizont verortet.

Der Autor, dessen Werke den größten Teil des relevanten Materials ausmachen, ist Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, aber Werke von Gutzkow, Bettine von Arnim, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Hebbel, Freytag, Raabe, Fontane, Grillparzer, Ebner-Eschenbach, Anzengruber und Ferdinand von Saar werden ebenfalls untersucht wie auch mehrere Erzählungen (Fabeln) der elsässischen Autoren Erckmann und Chatrian. Es gibt eine kurzes Kapitel über Frauen und Philosemitismus. Das Schlusskapitel lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Schuldgefühle, die in einer Anzahl dieser Texte zu Tage treten.
    Abstract: The work deals with philo-Semitic texts by the non-Jewish authors of the 19th century. The writer who provides the largest body of relevant material is Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, but works by Gutzkow, Bettine von Arnim, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Hebbel, Freytag, Raabe, Fontane, Grillparzer, Ebner-Eschenbach, Anzengruber, and Ferdinand von Saar are also examined, as are several tales by the Alsatian authors Erckmann and Chatrian. There is a short chapter on women and philo-Semitism. The conclusion draws attention to the feelings of guilt that are revealed in a number of the texts.
