Abstract:
Recounts the life story of a leading member of Hashomer Hatzair in Hungary who was active during the Holocaust in the rescue of Slovakian Jews who fled to Hungary and in rescue operations in Budapest after October 1944. Hunwald was born in Cluj, Transylvania, and moved with his family to Budapest in 1921. In 1942 he was arrested with other members of Hashomer Hatzair for smuggling Jews from Slovakia, and detained in the Garany camp from where he was recruited into a penal military labor battalion and sent to the Eastern front. In October 1944 he deserted and joined the rescue work conducted from the "Glass House", the Swiss protected shelter, posing as a Swiss official named Hans Kühne, until his murder by the Arrow Cross in January 1945, only a few days before the liberation of Budapest.
