    Abstract: Die Frage der Beziehung zwischen dem Jesajabuch und dem Buch der Zwölf Propheten ist angesichts vielfältiger Berührungen sprachlicher und motivischer Art zentral, jedoch hinsichtlich der damit verbundenen möglichen Implikationen bislang nur ungenügend bearbeitet. Im Rahmen eines internationalen Kongresses, der vom 31.Mai bis 3.Juni 2018 an der Katholischen Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt stattfand, suchten Fachleute des Zwölfprophetenbuches bzw. des Jesajabuches mit unterschiedlichen methodischen Ansätzen ein umfassenderes Bild der verschiedenen Arten von Beziehungen oder thematischen Berührungen zu erarbeiten, die entweder für die beiden Corpora als ganze oder für spezifische Teile beider charakteristisch sind, um daraus entsprechende Schlussfolgerungen zu ziehen. Das Ergebnis ist ein Überblick zur Vielfalt der semantischen, intertextuellen, literarischen, redaktionellen, historischen und theologischen Aspekte der Beziehungen zwischen dem Jesajabuch und dem Zwölfprophetenbuch, die einlinigen Lösungsvorschlägen zur Erklärung des Zustandekommens dieser Bezüge widerstreiten
    Abstract: Der Band beinhaltet zu Aufsätzen überarbeitete Vorträge, die im Rahmen des gleichnamigen Kongresses vom 31.Mai-3.Juni 2018 an der Katholischen Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt gehalten wurden.     Abstract: Scholars of the Hebrew Bible used to look at "Prophecy" and "Wisdom" as clearly distinct realms represented by antagonistic and mutually exclusive roles of their central characters: the loyal sage, the pillar of administration, on the one side and the rebellious prophet, criticizing the establishment, on the other. While the influence of wisdom thought on prophetic texts has been a topic in the scholarly debate, the complementary question of the influence of prophetic thought on wisdom texts has rarely been asked. The contributions in this volume look at both questions: They start from the assumption that texts from the Hebrew Bible and the cultures surrounding Ancient Israel all originated from a social stratum of educated scribes, who authored and transmitted these texts. It then seems plausible that wisdom texts might show similar traces of prophetic influence to those of wisdom thoughts found in prophetic texts. The essays give a multifaceted picture concerning the mutual perception of prophets and sages and thus provide a deeper understanding of both wisdom literature and prophecy

    Abstract: Each of the five versions of the story of Esther appeared as a separate attempt at early Jewish identity formation in the period between the 4th century BCE and the end of the 1st century CE. This study makes a major contribution to scholarship, especially with regard to the Old Latin version of the Book of Esther, published in an appendix for the first time in German translation
    Abstract: Im Mittelpunkt der Monographie stehen die fünf antiken Versionen des Estherbuches, die im Masoretischen Text, in der Septuaginta, im griechischen Alpha-Text, in der Vetus Latina und im 11. Buch der Antiquitates Judaicae des Josephus überliefert sind. Der Autor diskutiert die Textvarianten hinsichtlich der narrativen Profilierung der Figuren sowie der Diskurse politischer und göttlicher Macht. Dabei arbeitet er die Konzeptionen politischer Theologie in den Quellen heraus und ordnet sie in ihren Kontext ein. Die fünf Verarbeitungen des Esther-Stoffes erscheinen als je eigenständige Versuche frühjüdischer Identitätsbildung in der Zeit zwischen dem 4. Jh. v. Chr. und dem ausgehenden 1. Jh. n. Chr. sowie teils darüber hinaus. Insbesondere im Blick auf die altlateinische Version des Estherbuches, die hier erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung veröffentlicht ist, leistet die Studie einen gewichtigen Beitrag zur Forschung

    Abstract: This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture

    Abstract: To date, scholars have skilfully discussed aspects of Polqar’s thought, and yet none of the existing studies offers a comprehensive examination that covers Polqar’s thought in its entirety. This book aims to fill this lacuna by tracing and contextualizing both Polqar’s Islamic sources (al-Fārābī, Avicenna, and Averroes) and his Jewish sources (Maimonides and Isaac Albalag). The study brings to light three of Polqar’s main purposes; (1) seeking to defend Judaism as a true religion against Christianity; (2) similarly to his fellow Jewish Averroists, Polqar wishes to defend the discipline of philosophy. By philosophy, Polqar means Averroes' interpretation of Aristotle. As a consequence, he offers an Averroistic interpretation of Judaism and becomes one of the main representatives of Jewish Averroism; (3) defending his philosophical interpretation of Judaism. From a social and political point of view, Polqar's unreserved embrace of philosophy raised problems within the Jewish community; he had to refute the Jewish traditionalists’ charge that he was a heretic, led astray by philosophy. The main objective guiding this study is that Polqar advances a systematic naturalistic interpretation of Judaism, which in many cases does not agree with traditional Jewish views. -- De Gruyter website (accessed 6.4.2020)

The criteria for selecting the interpretations are not fully understood, nor whether the book was conceived as a comprehensive reference work for exegesis to link with the Biblical interpretation in the Talmud and Midrash, or for reforming the rabbinical tradition of interpretation.     Abstract: The scientific debates on border crossings and cultural exchange between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have much increased over the last decades. Within this context, however, little attention has been given to the biblical Exodus, which not only plays a pivotal role in the Abrahamic religions, but also is a master narrative of a border crossing in itself. Sea and desert are spaces of liminality and transit in more than just a geographical sense. Their passage includes a transition to freedom and initiation into a new divine community, an encounter with God and an entry into the Age of law. The volume gathers twelve articles written by leading specialists in Jewish and Islamic Studies, Theology and Literature, Art and Film history, dedicated to the transitional aspects within the Exodus narrative. Bringing these studies together, the volume takes a double approach, one that is both comparative and intercultural. How do Jewish, Christian and Islamic texts and images read and retell the various border crossings in the Exodus story, and on what levels do they interrelate? By raising these questions the volume aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of contact points between the various traditions

    Abstract: Die Türkische Republik, gegründet 1923, zeigte sich gegenüber der jüdischen Minderheit im Lande weitaus weniger tolerant als ihr Vorgänger, das pluralistische osmanische Vielvölkerreich. Der erstarkende türkische Nationalismus am Vorabend des Zweiten Weltkriegs, eine ausgeprägte Angst vor allem Fremdartigen und antijüdische Pressekampagnen bilden den Hintergrund für die gewaltsamen antisemitischen Ausschreitungen, die sich im Sommer 1934 zeitgleich in fast allen Städten und Gemeinden Türkisch-Thrakiens abspielten und die ihren Höhepunkt in einem regelrechten Pogrom in der grenznahen Stadt Kïrklareli fanden. Dieser Ausbruch antijüdischer Gewalt ist bis heute in der viele Jahrhunderte alten türkisch-jüdischen Geschichte beispiellos und kam für die meisten Opfer völlig unerwartet. • Die türkische Regierung führte die Unruhen auf Einflüsse aus dem Ausland zurück, denn Antisemitismus sei 'kein türkisches Produkt', so der damals amtierende Ministerpräsident Ismet Inönü. Hatice Bayraktar zeigt in ihrer Forschungsarbeit, dass entgegen der offiziellen türkischen Stellungnahme die Ursachen des antijüdischen Gewaltausbruchs 1934 jedoch nicht im Ausland, sondern in den politischen Entwicklungen innerhalb der Türkei zu suchen sind, und dass man zu den Drahtziehern der Unruhen höchstwahrscheinlich auch Vertreter der damaligen türkischen Regierung zählen muss. • Bisher nicht zugängliches Archivmaterial dient als Grundlage dieser Studie

    Abstract: This volume contributes to the growing interest in understanding the phenomenon of prayer and praying in the Hebrew Bible, Early Judaism, and nascent Christianity. Papers by the leading scholars in these fields revisit long-standing questions and chart new paths of inquiry into the nature, form, and practice of addressing the divine in the ancient world. The essays in this volume deal with particular texts of and about prayer, practices of prayer, as well as figures and locations (historical and literary) that are associated with prayer and praying. These studies apply a range of methods and theoretical approaches to prayer and the language of prayer in literatures of Early Judaism and Christianity. Some studies apply the classical methods of biblical studies to Second Temple texts of prayer, including form critical and text critical approaches; others engage in literary and narrative analysis of ancient works that recount discourse directed to the divine.     Abstract: This exploration of the Judean priesthood’s role in agricultural cultivation demonstrates that the institutional reach of Second Temple Judaism (516 BCE–70 CE) went far beyond the confines of its houses of worship, while exposing an unfamiliar aspect of sacred place-making in the ancient Jewish experience. Temples of the ancient world regularly held assets in land, often naming a patron deity as landowner and affording the land sanctity protections. Such arrangements can provide essential background to the Hebrew Bible’s assertion that God is the owner of the land of Israel. They can also shed light on references in early Jewish literature to the sacred landholdings of the priesthood or the temple

    Abstract: It is said that the greatest Mitzvah or good deed is to carry the coffin or bier on which a departed friend lies; the reason being that that departed friend cannot return the favor or honor. A modified version of this Mitzvah is employed by academics; it takes the form of a memorial volume in honor and memory of a departed academic who was most effective and beloved during his or her career. Thus, this memorial volume, dedicated to the honored memory of Professor Mishael Maswari Caspi, is just such a Mitzvah. The essays in this volume are of first class academic worth; a small digression of the norm of their contents being totally objective is that they were crafted with the addition of two emotions not found in academic works: great love and respect. Professor Caspi subscribed to the view that the greatest gift a former student or colleague could give to a professor was a piece of his or her critical mind. The fruit of some of those critical minds are enshrined within the covers of this memorial volume. The reader will return often to this volume and its special morphology crafted in honor of an accomplished scholar, pedagogue, poet, and Mensch.     Abstract: How can we invent new certain knowledge in a methodical manner? This question stands at the heart of Salomon Maimon's theory of invention. Chikurel argues that Maimon's contribution to the ars inveniendi tradition lies in the methods of invention which he prescribes for mathematics. Influenced by Proclus' commentary on Elements, these methods are applied on examples taken from Euclid's Elements and Data. Centering around methodical invention and scientific genius, Maimon's philosophy is unique in an era glorifying the artistic genius, known as Geniezeit. Invention, primarily defined as constructing syllogisms, has implications on the notion of being given in intuition as well as in symbolic cognition. Chikurel introduces Maimon's notion of analysis in the broader sense, grounded not only on the principle of contradiction but on intuition as well. In philosophy, ampliative analysis is based on Maimon's logical term of analysis of the object, a term that has yet to be discussed in Maimonian scholarship. Following its introduction, a new version of the question quid juris? arises. In mathematics, Chikurel demonstrates how this conception of analysis originates from practices of Greek geometrical analysis

    Abstract: The study spotlights the importance of ethical discourse on icons in the Book of Wisdom. Using structural, semantic, and topological analyses, it shows that parenesis about false and true images of God is an overarching theme, and contextualizes it in terms of tradition and cultural history. The text makes a unique contribution to the ancient debate on images by positing that they fulfill the imago dei invested in human beings
    Abstract: Trotz des anhaltenden Interesses an der Sapientia Salomonis besteht hinsichtlich der inhaltlichen und gattunggeschichtlichen Gesamteinordnung der jüdisch-hellenistischen Schrift noch immer Dissens. Die Heterogenität der verwendeten Themen, Traditionen und Genres scheint diese zu unterbinden, bleiben doch die Studien bei Teilkomplexen oder bei der literarkritischen Feststellung der Uneinheitlichkeit des Textes stehen. Auch die zuletzt vermehrt zugeschriebene strukturelle Kohärenz führte bisher nicht zu einer entsprechenden inhaltlichen Gesamtdeutung der Schrift. Gestützt auf strukturelle, semantische und topologische Analysen wird in dieser Studie die Paränese hinsichtlich wahrer und falscher Gottesbildern als Leitmotiv bzw. Hauptthema der überlieferten Endkomposition aufgezeigt. Weitere bildtheoretische, traditions- sowie kulurgeschichtliche Kontextualisierungen explizieren die Spezifika der ethisch ikonischen Ausführungen. Mit dem Postulat der Verwirklichung des im Menschen angelegten Ebenbilds durch ethische Nachahmung Gottes bietet die Schrift letzlich nicht nur einen spezifisch jüdischen Beitrag zur antiken Bilderdebatte, ihr kommt zudem eine Brückenfunktion zwischen biblischen und späteren Imago-Dei-Konzeptionen zu

    Abstract: Es gibt Wörter, in denen sich Kulturgeschichte in besonderer Weise verdichtet. Zu diesen Wörtern gehört auch mauscheln, das heute umgangssprachlich nur noch in der Bedeutung 'heimlich Vorteile aushandeln', 'Geschäfte machen' in Gebrauch ist. Doch mauscheln war in früheren Zeiten ein zentrales Kampfwort des Antisemitismus und wurde daneben auch in innerjüdischen Assimilationsdebatten und sogar bei sprach- und literaturkritischen Auseinandersetzungen benutzt. Unter mauscheln wurden ganz verschiedene Sachverhalte verstanden, die vom Ausleben der jüdischen Kultur bis zum Betrug reichten. Hans Peter Althaus zeichnet die Geschichte des ursprünglich von dem jiddischen Namen Mausche = Mose abgeleiteten Wortes auf der Grundlage einer umfangreichen Belegsammlung detailliert nach. Er zeigt, warum und wie das Wort als Waffe verwendet werden konnte. Anhand zahlreicher Beispiele aus Literatur, Musik, Lexikographie und Presse wird das Wort als Muster beschrieben, an dem Strukturen der Sprachentwicklung, aber auch Versuche der Manipulation und gesellschaftlichen Aggression sichtbar werden

    Abstract: The German word mauscheln is derived from the Yiddish language. It's original meaning is 'to talk like a Jewish trader' (Mausche = Yiddish word for Mose). Today the verb has a negative connotation and means 'to use dishonest tricks to reach an aim', 'to cheat'. Althaus examines the history of the word and asks how this negative connotation has developed and how the word was (and is!) applied as a weapon and defamation among artists, politicians and scientists.     Abstract: The eighth volume of the series "Key Concepts of Interreligious Discourses" investigates the roots of the concept of "peace" in Judaism, Christianity and Islam and its relevance for the present time. Facing present violent conflicts waged and justified by religious ideas or reasons, peace building prevails in current debates about religion and peace. Here the central question is: How may traditional sources in religions help to put down the weapons and create a society in which everyone can live safely without hostilities and the threat of violence? When we take the Sacred Scriptures of Judaism, Christianity and Islam into consideration it becomes obvious that the term "peace" and its equivalents in Hebrew, Greek and Arabic describe, at first, an ideal state based on the "love" / "mercy" of God to his creation. It is a divine gift that brings inward peace to the individuum and outer peace resting upon justice and equality. One main task of Jews, Christian and Muslims in the history is to find out how to bring down this transcendent ideal upon earth. The volume presents the concept of "peace" in its different aspects as anchored in the traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It unfolds commonalities and differences between the three monotheistic religions as well as the manifold discourses about peace within these three traditions. The book offers fundamental knowledge about the specific understanding of peace in each one of these traditions, their interdependencies and their relationship to secular world views

    Abstract: The Visitation of Hannah Arendt is an attempt to literally enact Arendt’s notion of "natality". Arendt, known to a large extent through her engagement with the public sphere and with political discourse, is invited here to pay intimate visitations to four different figures: an anonymous student, the poetess Dahlia Ravikovich, the ghost of Stefan Zweig and Michal, Saul’s daughter. The intellectual visitation, as a complex process of both mimesis and rejection, is revealed to be a natality, a rebirth in spirit. The book presents an aesthetic-semiotic reading of Arendt by traversing the ensemble of her work. A special chapter is dedicated to Eichmann in Jerusalem.

    Abstract: Spaniens Autonome Region Andalusien, heute einer der ärmsten Teile des Landes, weist eine besondere Tradition auf: Hier finden sich die meisten Residuen der jahrhundertelangen muslimischen Herrschaft auf der iberischen Halbinsel. Das maurische al-Andalus allerdings reichte zur Zeit seiner größten Ausdehnung weit über das heutige Andalusien hinaus: Von der Mitte Portugals über Toledo in Kastilien und Zaragoza bis zur Mittelmeerküste mit den Städten Valencia, Alicante und Almería, wo überall auch Christen und Juden in großer Zahl lebten. Es ist gute Tradition im Süden Spaniens, sich mit gewissem Stolz auf die eigene maurisch-arabische Vorgeschichte zu beziehen. Forschung und Wissenschaft haben viel dazu beigetragen, diese Vergangenheit zu erhellen und Mythen und Vorurteile durch gesicherte Erkenntnisse zu ersetzen. Dabei wurden einige liebgewordene Vorstellungen über Eroberung, Besatzung und das tägliche Leben unter der maurischen Herrschaft als unzutreffend erkannt. Neuere Untersuchungen über den Zeitraum von 711 bis 1492 ergaben weitere überraschende Resultate. So war ein großer Teil der „muslimischen Araber“ in al-Andalus berberischer Abstammung, ein intensiver Wissenstransfer zwischen den geistigen Zentren der muslimischen, aber auch der christlichen Welt ist belegt und es wurden rege Handelsbeziehungen über Nordafrika und das Mittelmeer zu den arabischen und persischen Kern- und Randregionen bis nach Vorderindien gepflegt. Lingua franca in diesem Wirtschafts- und Handelsraum war neben lokalen Dialekten generell Arabisch in Wort und Schrift. Werden verschriftlichte Kulturzeugen in Spanien untersucht, ist der routinierte Rückschluss auf arabische Provenienz üblich – und oft falsch. Eine detaillierte Betrachtung der Handelsströme und Wirtschaftsbeziehungen dieser Zeit zwischen al-Andalus und dem östlichen Mittelmeer und darüber hinaus ergibt einen erheblichen iranischen Anteil an fast allen wesentlichen Strukturen und Ereignissen.     Abstract: Die Studie analysiert die gesellschaftliche und rechtliche Situation der jüdischen Gemeinde von Damaskus ausgehend von der sog. Damaskusaffäre im Jahre 1840 bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und hinterfragt die häufig postulierte Spaltung der Gesellschaft entlang konfessioneller Grenzen. Sie geht der These nach, dass die Religionszugehörigkeit lediglich einer von vielen Faktoren war, der das soziale Bewusstsein und das Erleben persönlicher Freiheiten bedingte und dass vielmehr die Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Gesellschaftsschicht ausschlaggebend war für eine Unterteilung der spätosmanischen Gesellschaft in Damaskus. Hierzu werden fussend auf Dokumenten der Alliance Israélite Universelle in einem ersten Schritt neue Einblicke in die Gemeindeorganisation, die Berufsstruktur, das Bildungswesen und die wirtschaftliche und soziale Lage der jüdischen Gemeinde gewährt. Dokumente der Damaszener Scharia-Gerichte und des im 19. Jahrhundert eingesetzten Handelsgerichtes dienen schließlich dazu, die rechtliche Stellung jüdischer Gemeindemitglieder innerhalb der osmanischen Gerichtsbarkeit zu verorten sowie die Arbeitsweise der Gerichte zu verdeutlichen. Unter Einbeziehung islamischer und jüdischer Quellen wird somit erstmals ein umfassender Einblick in das alltägliche Leben der jüdischen Gemeinde von Damaskus in spätosmanischer Zeit ermöglicht

    Abstract: This volume contains essays by some of the leading scholars in the study of the Jewish religious ideas in the Second Temple period, that led up to the development of early forms of Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity. Close attention is paid to the cosmological ideas to be found in the Ancient Near East and in the Hebrew Bible and to the manner in which the translators of the Hebrew Bible into Greek reflected the creativity with which Judaism engaged Hellenistic ideas about the cosmos and the creation. The concepts of heaven and divine power, human mortality, the forces of nature, combat myths, and the philosophy of wisdom, as they occur in 2 Maccabees, Ben Sira, Wisdom of Solomon and Tobit, are carefully analysed and compared with Greek and Roman world-views. There are also critical examinations of Dead Sea scroll texts, early Jewish prayers and Hebrew liturgical poetry and how they these adopt, adapt and alter earlier ideas. The editors have included appreciations of two major figures who played important roles in the study of the Second Temple period and in the history and development of the ISDCL, namely, Otto Kaiser and Alexander Di Lella, who died recently and are greatly missed by those in the field

    Abstract: This volume offers an examination of varied forms of expressions of heresy in Jewish history, thought and literature. Contributions explore the formative role of the figure of the heretic and of heretic thought in the development of the Jewish traditions from antiquity to the 20th century. Chapters explore the role of heresy in the Hellenic period and Rabbinic literature; the significance of heresy to Kabbalah, and the critical and often formative importance the challenge of heresy plays for modern thinkers such as Spinoza, Freud, Kafka, and Derrida, and literary figures such as Kafka, Tchernikhovsky, and I.B. Singer. Examining heresy as a boundary issue constitutive for the formation of Jewish tradition, this book contributes to a better understanding of the significance of the figure of the heretic for tradition more generally

    Abstract: Die Studie widmet sich erstmals epochenübergreifend der jüdischen Beteiligung in der italienischen Frauenbewegung. Aus einer transnationalen Perspektive und auf der Basis neu erschlossener Egodokumente, zeitgenössischer Zeitschriften, den Archiven jüdischer Gemeinden sowie der Überlieferung von Polizei und Behörden richtet Ruth Nattermann den Fokus auf die Erfahrungen italienisch-jüdischer Protagonistinnen im liberalen Einheitsstaat, während des Ersten Weltkriegs und der faschistischen Diktatur bis 1945. Das Ziel besteht darin, die Spannungen des Emanzipationsprozesses zwischen Partizipation und Abgrenzung herauszuarbeiten sowie die Marginalisierung und Verfolgung während des faschistischen Regimes aus dem Blickwinkel jüdischer Frauen zu betrachten. Dass die faschistische Rassengesetzgebung des Jahres 1938 nicht das Ende einer idyllischen Integration, sondern den Höhepunkt einer langfristigen Entwicklung bildete, wird anhand der Untersuchung italienisch-jüdischer Akteurinnen in ihren Beziehungen zur nicht-jüdischen Mehrheitsgesellschaft eindrücklich demonstriert. Trotz ihres bedeutenden Einflusses auf die transnationale Orientierung der italienischen Frauenbewegung blieb ihre Emanzipation als Frauen und Jüdinnen unvollkommen

    Abstract: Die Handschriften aus der Judäischen Wüste sind eine wichtige Quelle für die ausgehende biblische Zeit. In diesem Band sind erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung die nicht-biblischen Texte vereint, die nicht aus Qumran stammen. Im Gegensatz zu den Qumran-Texten stammen diese Texte nicht von einer religiösen Sondergruppe, sondern aus dem Alltagsleben oder dem Leben während eines Aufstands. Die meisten Manuskripte entstanden in der Zeit von etwa 50 – 135 n.Chr., der Zeit der beiden Jüdischen Aufstände und der Abfassung des Neuen Testaments, die anderen aus der vorexilischen bis zur islamischen Zeit. Sie sind auf Hebräisch, Aramäisch, Nabatäisch, Griechisch, Lateinisch und Arabisch geschrieben. Die Übersetzung macht die Texte denen zugänglich, denen es die Originale nicht sind. Die nah am Original gehaltene Übersetzung soll denjenigen, die über Grundkenntnisse der jeweiligen Sprache verfügen, den Zugang　zum Text erleichtern. Einführungen in die verwendeten Sprachen, die benutzten Formulare, einzelne Dokumentengruppen, die belegten Datierungssysteme, die Personen- und Ortsnamen sowie in Münzen und Maße erschließen die Texte

    Abstract: Precarious Figurations focuses on the reception of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Germany. Looking at theatrical practices and critical or scholarly discourses from the Weimar Republic to the new millennium, the book explores why the play has served simultaneously as a vehicle for the actualization of anti-Semitic tropes and as a staging ground for the critical exposure of the very logic of anti-Semitism. In particular, the study investigates how the figure of Shylock has come to be both a device in and a stumbling block for attempts to bridge the fundamental rupture in civilization brought about by the Holocaust. The careful analysis of the German reception of Merchant, and in particular of the ways of doing and reading Shylock in the context of painful German, and German-Jewish, discourses of identity and remembrance, is designed to raise fundamental questions – questions concerning not only the staging of Jewishness, the tenacity of anti-Semitism and the difficulties of Holocaust remembrance, but also the general potentials and limitations of theatrical interventions into cultural conflicts

    Abstract: This study traces G. W. F. Hegel’s intellectual engagement with the Jewish Platonist Philo of Alexandria. In a historic-systematical investigation, Strauss elucidates the ambivalence of Hegel’s image of Philo. Hegel understood him as a transitional figure between Judaism and Christianity. At the same time, he saw Philo’s thought as an early form of Neo-Platonism in which the Biblical God encounters the metaphysical Logos of the Greeks for the first time

It brings together contemporary writers and literary scholars who collectively map these intensities onto a bodily word world in transit and textures of habitable, readable space as passage.Works by Hélène Cixous, Cécile Wajsbrot, Alex Epstein, Almog Behar, and Svetlana Boym explore sites made up of layers of passages, taking configurations of sayability and readability as forms, poetic and political, of inhabiting the material world. The contributions by literary scholars explore the theoretical potential of a mapping of such sites in studies of modalities of belonging and unbelonging in modern and contemporary works of literature.The volume collects a collaborative investigation of the exigencies and potentialities of sense of place and belonging through literature, Jewish and other. It offers a literary perspective on current debates in a variety of fields, including literary criticism, human geography, architectural theory, and translation studies

    Abstract: "Der längste altfranzösische Text in hebräischer Graphie, genannt Fevres, ist ein theoretischer medizinischer Fachtext und besteht aus einer Kompilation von Werken salernitanischer Tradition, die in dem Traktat erstmals auf Französisch vorliegen. Der anonyme jüdische Autor lebte im Grenzgebiet Champagne - Lothringen - Burgund, und stellte die Fieberschrift vermutlich eingangs des 14. Jahrhunderts zusammen, indem er kanonische Texte v.a. aus dem Lateinischen in die Volkssprache übersetzte. Fevres ist in einem einizigen Manuskript, möglicherweise sogar als Autograph (Berlin SBPK Ms. or. oct. 512), überliefert. Die Autorin ermöglicht auch Romanisten, die das hebräische Alphabet nicht lesen, durch eine Teiledition in vier Schritten (Textedition - Transliteration - hypothetischer, altfranzösischer Lesetext - Übersetzung) einen Zugang zu diesem aussergewöhnlichen Text. Der Edition wird eine ausführliche Einleitung vorangestellt, die u.a. die jüdisch-französische Texttradition darstellt sowie quellenkundliche und sprachlichen Merkmale von Fevres näher untersucht. Umfangreiche Glossare, die den medizinischen Fachwortschatz mit zahlreichen Erstbelegen erfassen, runden die Arbeit ab. Diese Arbeit wurde mit dem Kurt-Ringger-Preis 2017 ausgezeichnet"--

    Abstract: Writing a history of art dealing in the Third Reich presents a special challenge, not only because of the difficult situation regarding source material. The actors’ activities are enmeshed in outrageous contradictions involving complicity and sabotage. Dabei stösst in Deutschland die wissenschaftliche, in einen universitären Rahmen eingebundene Beschäftigung mit dem jüdischer Geschichte, Literatur, Religion und Kultur nach wie vor auf ein breites Interesse, und die Notwendigkeit der Aufarbeitung der jüdischen Geschichte wird erkannt und breit gefördert. Wie die Gründung zahlreicher judaistischer Institute und die Schaffung von Lehrstühlen und Studiengängen an verschiedenen Universitäten im deutschsprachigen Raum belegt, ist die Nachfrage nach fundierter Vermittlung und Forschung zu jüdischen Themen nach wie vor gross, auch wenn mancherorts auch schon ein Rückgang an Förderung und Interesse zu beobachten ist und die Stellung der Kleinen Fächer an grösseren Fakultäten in Frage gestellt wird. Der vorliegende Band stellt unterschiedliche Positionen zur Relevanz und universitätspolitischen Verortung der wissenschaftlichen Beschäftigung mit dem Judentum zusammen"--
