    Abstract: "The international conference "Psalms in Rituals from Antiquity to the Present," held on October 24-26, 2018, at the Max-Weber Kolleg in the University of Erfurt, Germany, aimed to showcase and also to build upon recent developments in what has become a very exciting field, bringing to it the distinctive perspective of the Research Centre "Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present," which hosted the event. The Research Centre, which was funded from 2015 to 2020 by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), investigated the dynamic relationship of rituals in pluralistic contexts and specifically in Jewish and Christian religious traditions. While religious institutions often focus on tradition, invariability, and rootedness in history, the Research Centre has found and studied numerous examples of innovation and change in regard to religious ritual practices. This landmark conference approached the subject of the Psalms as a dynamic part of Jewish liturgy, ritual, and community formation from a broad perspective. ... They debate the degree to which the movement was separated from the rest of Judaism, and whether there was one or several watershed moments in the separation. Notable contributions include a cluster of essays on the Teacher of Righteousness and a thorough survey of the archaeology of Qumran. The texts are problematic in historical research because they rely on biblical stereotypes. Nonetheless, possible interpretations can be compared and degrees of probability debated. The debate is significant not only for the sect but for the nature of ancient Judaism

Beide bezogen mit ihrer Kunst politisch Stellung, beide beschäftigten sich mit der Aufarbeitung der unvorstellbaren Schrecken des Holocaust, beide traten Krieg, Grausamkeit und Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit mit aller Kraft entgegen. Ihre rauen Arbeiten widersetzen sich einer einfachen Konsumierbarkeit, die ihnen als ein Gräuel des Kunstbetriebs erschien. Heute erscheinen die Werke der beiden Künstler aktueller denn je, setzen sie doch auf eine Art Schocktherapie, mit der sie das Publikum auf die Kontinuität von Gewalt und Menschenverachtung aufmerksam machen. Wolf Vostell gehört zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Künstlern des 20. Jahrhunderts und ist insbesondere als Mitbegründer der Fluxus-Bewegung bekannt. Anlässlich seines 90. Geburtstages widmet das Kunsthaus Dahlem ihm und seinem Künstlerkollegen Boris Lurie eine Ausstellung, die auf seine künstlerische Aufarbeitung des Holocausts und der jüngsten deutschen Vergangenheit fokussiert. Die Wahl des Ausstellungsortes ist keine zufällige: 1984 sprach die Stadt Berlin dem Künstler im ehemaligen Staatsatelier des NS-Bildhauers Arno Breker, dem heutigen Kunsthaus Dahlem, ein Arbeitsraum auf Lebenszeit zu. Breker hatte nicht nur zahlreiche Privilegien als Künstler genossen, sondern mit seinen Werken auch aktiv die Ideologie und Ästhetik des NS-Regimes bildnerisch zu übersetzen versucht. An diesem Ort setzte Wolf Vostell seine Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert fort, die er in den ausgehenden 1950er-Jahren begonnen hatte. Die Aufarbeitung der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur und das Gedenken an den Holocaust sowie ihren Nachwirkungen hat Vostell in allen Schaffensphasen und in allen von ihm angewendeten Materialien realisiert und damit in einer Dichte wie kaum ein anderer Künstler seiner Zeit. Im Dialog mit Wolf Vostell stehen ausgewählte Werke des Künstlers Boris Lurie (1924-2008), mit dem Vostell seit den 1960er-Jahren in intensiven Austausch stand. Boris Lurie, der russische Jude, der in Riga aufwuchs und die Schrecken der Shoah am eigenen Leib erlebte, wurde von Wolf Vostell, der diese traumatischen Erfahrungen als Deutscher nachempfinden wollte, sofort verstanden. Auch stilistisch und hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit Material waren die beiden Künstler-Freunde oftmals ähnlicher Ansicht. Die zahlreichen stilistischen und inhaltlichen Parallelen zeichnet die Ausstellung im Kunsthaus Dahlem erstmals detailliert nach.

Das neu eingeführte Frauenwahlrecht der frühen Weimarer Demokratie führte allgemein zu mehr Souveränität unter den Frauen. Während immer mehr Weimarer Bürgerinnen von den Möglichkeiten Gebrauch machten, die vorangegangenen Generationen verwehrt geblieben waren, wurden jedoch gerade die Tänzerinnen dieser Ära zu Ikonen jenes modernen Körper- und Selbstbewusstseins, das neben der Gesellschaft im Großen und Ganzen auch die bildende Kunst prägen sollte. Im Berlin der 1920er-Jahre revolutionierte die fruchtbare Verbindung von Tanz und Skulptur das Verhältnis von Raum, Zeit und Form. Mit der von Dr. Julia Wallner und Brygida Ochaim kuratierten Ausstellung »Der absolute Tanz« spürt das Georg Kolbe Museum diesen weit ausstrahlenden Neuerungen nach, die auch im Werk seines Stifters eine Schlüsselrolle einnehmen. Im Fokus der Schau, die dem Dialog zwischen den Disziplinen nachspürt und ihn dabei gezielt wiederbelebt, stehen elf herausragende Berliner Tänzerinnen der Weimarer Republik: Charlotte Bara, Tatjana Barbakoff, Claire Bauroff, Anita Berber, Hertha Feist, Valeska Gert, Jo Mihaly, Celly de Rheidt, Oda Schottmüller, Vera Skoronel und Berthe Trümpy. Sie alle bereicherten den modernen Tanz durch Aspekte des Skulpturalen und die Bildhauerei durch ihre körperliche Energie und Präsenz. Eine Vielzahl an Zeitdokumenten, Filmen, Fotografien, Skizzen und Skulpturen zeichnen die Lebenswege der Protagonistinnen nach und schaffen neue Zugänge zu ihren einflussreichen, raumplastischen Konzepten. Zugleich wird ihr Wirken mit zeitgenössischen Perspektiven und künstlerischen Positionen in Bezug gesetzt. So wird steht die Ausstellung im Dialog mit einer neuen Werkreihe Ulla von Brandenburgs, welche speziell für das Georg Kolbe Museum entwickelt und in Kooperation mit der Veranstaltung „Le Voyage à Nantes“ produziert wurde.     Abstract: Vor allem in den 1920er Jahren war das Seebad Mariendorf legendär – die schönste und größte Badeanstalt Groß-Berlins. Das hätte es so nicht gegeben ohne Adolf Lewissohn. Seit 1876 hatte er diese Anlage immer weiter ausgebaut - bis die Nazis sie dann "arisierten". 1950 wurde schließlich alles abgerissen. Ein Stück deutsche Geschichte. Sonderausstellung bis 10.10.2021 Ein beherzter Sprung ins kühle Nass bei Sonnenschein und Sommerwind? Der Begriff Seebad weckt beim Lesen unwillkürlich Urlaubsgefühle. Mariendorf liegt bekanntlich weder an der Nord- noch an der Ostsee. Dennoch war das dortige Seebad über Jahrzehnte ein Anziehungspunkt für Groß und Klein und galt Ende der 1920er Jahre als die „größte und schönste Sportbadeanstalt von Groß-Berlin“ mit bis zu 4000 Gästen täglich. Nicht nur Schwimmer_innen kamen hier auf ihre Kosten: Das Schwimmbad war ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel und hatte als Naturidyll mit Parkanlage, Seeterrassen, Konzertangeboten und einem Wasserfall auch abseits des Badevergnügens einiges zu bieten. Zeitweilig war es sogar eine der relevantesten Wettkampfstätten für den deutschen Schwimmsport. Die Geschichte des Seebades Mariendorf ist untrennbar mit der Familie Lewissohn verbunden. Der Besitzer Adolf Lewissohn trieb ab 1876 den Ausbau der Anlage beständig voran und erschloss dafür neue Geschäftsfelder. Im Winter nutzte er seine Wasserflächen, um große Mengen Natureis für die Berliner Brauereien zu ernten. Außerdem war er als Grundstücksmakler erfolgreich und hatte durch diese Tätigkeit einen wichtigen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung von Mariendorf und Tempelhof. Die Badeanstalt durchlebte während der Weimarer Republik ihre Glanzzeit. Die Weltwirtschaftskrise und der zunehmende Antisemitismus ab den 1930er Jahren machten jedoch den Weiterbetrieb unmöglich. Die Anlage geriet unter Zwangsverwaltung und erhielt neue Eigentümer_innen. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg kämpfte Helene Lewissohn, die Tochter des Gründers, vergeblich um Entschädigungsleistungen für den Verlust des Familienbesitzes. Nach 1945 entsprach das Seebad nicht mehr den Anforderungen der Zeit und wurde 1950 zugeschüttet und abgerissen. Die Sonderausstellung im Tempelhof Museum erzählt am Beispiel des Seebades Mariendorf deutsche Geschichte von der Gründer- bis zur Nachkriegszeit. Zu sehen sind neben zahlreichen historischen Fotografien und Dokumenten auch Wandbilder der Künstlerin Friederike von Hellermann. Mit ihren Illustrationen lässt sie die lebendige Szenerie des Seebades wieder auferstehen.

    Abstract: Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde Berlin zum Zufluchtsort für jüdische Displaced Persons (DP). Sie nannten sich she’erit hapletah, »die letzten Überlebenden«. Für die meisten von ihnen war Deutschland – als das Land der Täter_innen – der letzte Ort, an dem sie bleiben wollten. In Mariendorf, Zehlendorf und Reinickendorf entstanden Lager, in denen jüdische DPs oft mehrere Jahre lebten. Die Ausstellung erzählt von ihrem Alltag innerhalb und außerhalb der DP-Lager und ihren Hoffnungen auf eine Zukunft nach der Shoah. Zugleich wirft sie einen historischen Blick auf die Einwanderungsstadt Berlin, die bis heute für viele Menschen ein Ort der Migration und Zuflucht ist. An outstanding representative of the Hebrew Jewish culture that then flourished in southern France, Gersonides wrote on mathematics, logic, astronomy, astrology, physical science, metaphysics and theology, and commented on almost the entire bible. His strong-minded attempt to integrate these different areas of study into a unitary system of thought was deeply rooted in the Aristotelian tradition and yet innovative in many respects, and thus elicited diverse and often impassionate reactions.     Abstract: On 20 January 1942, fifteen senior representatives of the Nazi regime meet in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee to discuss the murder of millions of European Jews. The killing has already begun by the time of this "meeting followed by breakfast". The participants - members of the SS, the Nazi Party and various ministries - coordinate the planning, organisation and implementation of the deportations and murder. The significance of the so-called Wannsee Conference for the bureaucratically-organised mass murder is documented in a permanent exhibition that opened in 2020 and was created using Design for All. This catalogue reproduces selected documents and photos from the exhibition to demonstrate that many institutions and individuals were involved in the mass murder. It illustrates some of the ways in which the crimes and the historic site were dealt with after the war, as well as their significance for the present.

    Abstract: Die Sehnsucht nach einer Idylle jenseits des turbulenten Großstadtgetriebes ließ um 1900 nicht nur wirtschaftsmächtige Unternehmer und Industrielle, sondern auch Architekten und Künstler aus Berlin hinaus nach Wannsee ziehen. Hier hatte der Bankier Wilhelm Conrad eine Villenkolonie begründet, in der sich mit Oscar Begas, Carl Becker, Anton von Werner, Hugo Vogel und Philipp Franck seit Beginn der 1870er Jahre eine Reihe renommierter Berliner Maler niederließen, in deren Schaffen und in deren Häusern sich die zeitgenössischen künstlerischen und architektonischen Strömungen zwischen Tradition und Moderne widerspiegeln. Auftakt dieser Entwicklung war der Zuzug des Historien- und Porträtmalers Oscar Begas (1828-1883), der sich 1872 mit seiner Villa im Stil der italienischen Renaissance am Kleinen Wannsee nicht nur einen paradiesischen Rückzugsort, sondern auch einen Ort des kreativen Schaffens und des gesellschaftlichen Austauschs schuf. Ebenso wie der Akademieprofessor Carl Becker (1820-1900), dessen florentinisch anmutende Villa in der Conradstraße 13 noch heute an Ort und Stelle steht und an den Historienmaler erinnert. Während Oscar Begas und Carl Becker zeitlebens der akademischen Malerei verpflichtet waren, lässt sich in den in Wannsee entstandenen Werken der Historienmaler Anton von Werner (1843-1915) und Hugo Vogel (1855-1934) bereits thematisch wie stilistisch jene Hinwendung zu Licht, Luft und Sonne feststellen, die schließlich in den impressionistischen Arbeiten Philipp Francks (1860-1944) und Max Liebermanns (1847-1935) zur Vollendung gelangte. Diese Modernität fand auch in den jeweiligen Künstlerhäusern sprechenden Ausdruck. Als Max Liebermann 1910 sein Sommerhaus am Wannsee bezog, war dies gleichsam der krönende Abschluss einer jahrzehntelangen Entwicklung. Erstmalig beleuchtet die Liebermann-Villa in ihrer Ausstellung Sehnsucht nach Idylle die Netzwerke der Maler am Wannsee und stellt anhand exemplarischer Werke und zeithistorischer Dokumente die jeweiligen Lebens- und Schaffenswelten der Künstler vor. Dabei zeichnet die Ausstellung auch die Entwicklung von einer traditionsorientierten Kunstauffassung akademischer Provenienz zum Impressionismus Max Liebermanns nach.

    Abstract: Die Ausstellung zeigt, in welchem Ausmaß das bisher meist als einflusslos dargestellte Reichsarbeitsministerium die nationalsozialistische Diktatur stützte. Es beteiligte sich an der Diskriminierung einzelner Bevölkerungsgruppen und wirkte maßgeblich an der Organisation des Zwangsarbeitereinsatzes mit. Welche Auswirkungen die Arbeits- und Sozialpolitik auf die Menschen im Deutschen Reich, aber auch in den deutsch besetzten Gebieten hatte, machen Fallbeispiele deutlich. Durch die Darstellung einzelner Biografien von Beamten des Reichsarbeitsministeriums wird deren Handlungsspielraum in der NS-Zeit ersichtlich. Die Ausstellung basiert auf Ergebnissen einer Unabhängigen Historikerkommission, die seit 2013 die Geschichte des Reichsarbeitsministeriums in der NS-Zeit erforscht. The exhibition shows the extent to which the Reich Ministry of Labour supported the Nazi dictatorship. Portrayed until now as having had little influence, the ministry participated in the discrimination against particular sections of the population and played a major role in organising the deployment of forced labour. The impact of labour and welfare policy on people both within the German Reich and in the German-occupied territories is illustrated through case studies. Biographies of civil servants working at the Reich Ministry of Labour highlight their individual scope for action during the Nazi period. The exhibition is based on the findings of the Independent Commission of Historians set up in 2013 to research the history of the Reich Ministry of Labour during the Nazi era.

    Abstract: Erstmals zeigt die Liebermann-Villa am Wannsee eine Gegenüberstellung der beiden Berliner Impressionisten Max Liebermann und Lesser Ury. Dabei hätte Ury kaum eine Einladung in Liebermanns „Schloss am See“ erhalten, waren sich doch beide Künstlerkollegen in herzlicher Abneigung verbunden. Dabei erkannte Liebermann das Talent des jüngeren Ury durchaus und förderte ihn anfangs. Eine Anekdote wirft jedoch schlagartig Licht auf die Entfremdung der beiden Künstler: Ury hatte nämlich behauptet, dass die Lichteffekte in Liebermanns Meisterwerk „Flachsscheuer in Laren“ (1887) von ihm, Ury, gemalt seien. Darauf antwortete Liebermann in einem Brief an den Publizisten Maximilian Harden 1907: „Ich würde erst den Staatsanwalt anrufen, wenn er behauptete, ich hätte seine Bilder gemalt.“ Fortan behinderte Liebermann Urys Karriere wo er nur konnte. Erst nachdem Liebermann 1913 als Vorsitzender der Berliner Secession zurücktrat, konnte Ury dort regelmäßig ausstellen. Die beiden Berliner Impressionisten waren nicht nur gegensätzliche Persönlichkeiten und entstammten sehr verschiedenen jüdischen Milieus Deutschlands - auch ihre Kunst geht verschiedene Wege. Die Ausstellung geht den Impressionismen der beiden nach und stellt in Liebermanns Sommervilla ein neutrales Terrain her, auf dem sich beide mit rund 45 Gemälden und Papierarbeiten künstlerisch begegnen können. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf den Berliner Großstadtbildern der beiden Maler. Die Gegenüberstellung ist auch deshalb so lohnenswert, weil beide eine jeweils spezifische Sicht auf ihr Berlin haben. Malt Liebermann mit Vorliebe das Grün, immer wieder den Tiergarten und die Berliner Parks, ist Ury mehr an der modernen Großstadt interessiert, setzt Nachtszenen mit Autoverkehr, Straßenbeleuchtung und typische Gebäude Berlins ins Bild. Im Aufeinandertreffen von Max Liebermann und Lesser Ury gewinnt die Ausstellung einen differenzierten Blick für beide Protagonisten der Kunstszene der Weltstadt Berlin zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts.

    Abstract: Emil Nolde (1867-1956) ist einer der wichtigsten und bekanntesten deutschen Künstler der Klassischen Moderne. Als gefeierter Künstler wurde er zur zentralen Gestalt der Kunstkonflikte im Nationalsozialismus, bei der ihn eine Partei zum Altmeister des "nordischen Expressionismus" stilisierte, während die Gegner ihn als "Kunstbolschewisten" diffamierten. Der vorliegende Band wertet erstmals den umfangreichen Bestand des Nachlasses in Seebüll aus und gibt überraschende neue Einsichten in Noldes Selbstverständnis als verkanntes "deutsches" Kunst-Genie. Die Suche nach Anerkennung und die Arbeit an der eigenen Legende ziehen sich als roter Faden durch die 1930er- und 1940er-Jahre. Die die große Ausstellung der Nationalgalerie begleitende Publikation erklärt die Selbstmobilisierung Noldes für den Nationalsozialismus im Kontext der Arbeit an der eigenen Autobiografie, zeigt die Folgen seines sich radikalisierenden Antisemitismus und präsentiert ein vollständig neues Bild des Berufsverbots und der Entstehung der angeblich heimlich geschaffenen "Ungemalten Bilder". Zahlreiche bisher unpublizierte Briefe und Dokumente geben Einblick in die spannungsreiche Entstehungsgeschichte der berühmtesten Legende der modernen deutschen Kunst.

    Abstract: Als die Wehrmacht die Niederlande im Mai 1940 überfiel, lebten dort 140.000 Juden. Die deutschen Besatzungskräfte griffen zu immer schärferen anti-jüdischen Maßnahmen. 107.000 Männer, Frauen und Kinder wurden in die nationalsozialistischen Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager deportiert. Mindestens 102.000 von ihnen wurden von der SS ermordet oder fielen mörderischen Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen zum Opfer. Dies ist die erste Ausstellung zur Geschichte der Verfolgung der Juden während der deutschen Besatzungsherrschaft in den Niederlanden, in deren Fokus fotografische Zeugnisse stehen. Sie wurde vom NIOD Instituut voor Oorlogs-, Holocaust en Genocidestudies in Kooperation mit dem Joods Cultureel Kwartier/Nationaal Holocaust Museum i.o. und der Stiftung Topographie des Terrors erarbeitet.     Abstract: The present volume of proceedings offers cutting-edge research on the Hebrew language in the late Persian, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Fourteen specialists of ancient Hebrew illuminate various aspects of the language, from phonology through grammar and syntax to semantics and interpretation. The research furthers the exegesis of biblical and non-biblical texts, it helps determine the chronological outline of Hebrew literature, and contributes to a better understanding of the sociolinguistic aspects of the language in the period of the Second Temple. Hebrew did not die out after the Babylonian exile, but continued to be used in speaking and writing in a variety of settings

    Abstract: "The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" under National Socialism describes the attempt of a considerable number of German scholars to counter the vanishing influence of religious prejudices against the Jews with a new antisemitic rationale. As anti-Jewish stereotypes of an old-fashioned soteriological kind had become dysfunctional under the pressure of secularization, a new, more objective explanation was needed to justify the age-old danger of Judaism in the present. In the 1930s a new research field called "Judenforschung" (Jew research) emerged. Its leading figures amalgamated racial and religious features to verify the existence of an everlasting "Jewish problem". Along with that they offered scholarly concepts for its solution"--

    Abstract: Die Sonderausstellung Berlin 1937 – im Schatten von morgen setzt sich auf einer inhaltlich und gestalterisch neu konzipierten Ausstellungsfläche im Märkischen Museum mit dem Leben in der Reichshauptstadt des Jahres 1937 auseinander. Das Stadtmuseum Berlin löst damit ein Versprechen aus seiner im vergangenen Jahr verabschiedeten Zukunftsstrategie ein: mehr Ausstellungen zu historisch und politisch relevanten Themen zu realisieren. Mit der aktuellen Sonderausstellung wird dieses Vorhaben erstmals sichtbar. Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung steht die kritische Betrachtung großstädtischer Lebenswirklichkeiten unter den Bedingungen der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur. Damit ergänzt die Sonderausstellung zehn Monate lang als eigenständiges Angebot die vielfältigen Ausstellungen der Berliner Dokumentationsstätten und Erinnerungsorte zu diesem Thema. Zwischen Herrschaftskonsolidierung und Kriegsvorbereitung markiert das Jahr 1937 unter dem NS-Regime eine innen- wie außenpolitisch kurze Phase relativer Ruhe. Dieser vergleichsweise ereignisarme Zeitraum steht im Zentrum einer analytischen Darstellung des Großstadtalltags. Die Ausstellung ist als Rundgang konzipiert, der mit Blick auf Stadtbilder, Lebensbereiche, Schauflächen, Angsträume und Geschichtsfelder unterschiedliche Themengebiete erschließt. Über 50 Originale, zum Teil erstmals präsentierte Objekte erzählen dabei vom Alltag in der Metropole und den Menschen dieser Zeit. Tablet-Computer liefern zu jedem Objekt vertiefende Inhalte: Historische Fotos, Dokumente und Filmausschnitte erläutern die größeren Zusammenhänge und bieten so kompakt und abwechslungsreich vertiefende Hintergrundinformationen. Schilderungen von Zeitzeugen aus Tagebüchern, Briefen und Artikeln geben zudem persönliche Einblicke in das damalige Berlin. Unter den Objekten befindet sich ein weltweit einmaliges Exponat: Teile eines Schaukastens, in dem das nationalsozialistische Hetzblatt Der Stürmer präsentiert wurde. Die originalen Tafeln stellen neben Zeitungsseiten antisemitische Parolen, Karikaturen und Spottverse zur Schau. Dieses einzigartige Objekt wurde 2015 auf dem Dachboden einer zum Abriss bestimmten Ausflugsgaststätte in Berlin-Schmöckwitz gefunden und der Gedenk- und Bildungsstätte Haus der Wannseekonferenz übergeben. Im Märkischen Museum ist sie nun erstmals öffentlich zu sehen. Auch das Museum selbst ist Gegenstand der kritischen Betrachtung. Im Jahr 1937 beteiligte sich das Märkische Museum an der von den Nationalsozialisten instrumentalisierten 700-Jahr-Feier von Berlin.

    Abstract: The Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran and the Concept of a Library presents twelve articles by renowned experts in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Qumran studies. These articles explore from various angles the question of whether or not the collection of manuscripts found in the eleven caves in the vicinity of Khirbet Qumran can be characterized as a “library,” and, if so, what the relation of that library is to the ruins of Qumran and the group of Jews that inhabited them. The essays fall into the following categories: the collection as a whole, subcollections within the overall corpus, and the implications of identifying the Qumran collection as a library

    Abstract: Mit dem „Gesetz über den Widerruf von Einbürgerungen und die Aberkennung der deutschen Staatsbürgerschaft“ vom 14. Juli 1933 hatte der NS-Staat ein Instrument geschaffen, gegen „Landesverräter“, die sich im Ausland aufhielten, vorzugehen. Er konnte damit Menschen die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit entziehen und sich ihr Vermögen aneignen. Zwischen 1933 und 1945 wurden rund 39.000 deutsche Staatsbürger ausgebürgert. Die erste Ausbürgerungsliste vom 25. August 1933 enthält die Namen von 33 Personen, die zumeist nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten am 30. Januar 1933 aus Deutschland geflohen waren, weil sie als Gegner des NS-Regimes um ihr Leben fürchten mussten. Anhand dieser ersten Liste beabsichtigten die Nationalsozialisten „bei besonders bekannten Persönlichkeiten der SPD, KPD, ferner von jüdischen und anderen Persönlichkeiten ein Exempel zu statuieren“ (Besprechung im Reichsinnenministerium am 16.8.1933). Neben der Darstellung der Vorgeschichte und der Zielsetzung des Ausbürgerungs­gesetzes sowie der erstmaligen administrativen Umsetzung der Verfolgungsmaßnahme enthält der Band Porträts der Ausgebürgerten, zu denen prominente Namen wie Rudolf Breitscheid, Lion Feuchtwanger, Alfred Kerr, Heinrich Mann, Wilhelm Pieck, Philipp Scheidemann, Ernst Toller, Kurt Tucholsky und Bernhard Weiß gehören.

Die persönlichen Geschichten dieser Menschen wollten wir erzählen. Deshalb haben wir zum Jubiläum die Ausstellung „100 Jahre Synagoge am Fraenkelufer“ ins Leben gerufen. Anhand persönlicher Biografien und Bilder zeigt die Ausstellung Lebenswege und Erinnerungen einiger Menschen, die im letzten Jahrhundert mit der Synagoge verbunden waren und es bis heute sind. Entstanden ist so ein Familienalbum der ganz besonderen Art. (...) Auch Meir Neumann, der die Shoa im Versteck überlebt und hier kurz nach dem Krieg Bar Mitzvah gefeiert hat, ist noch heute Beter am Fraenkelufer – und hat uns für die Ausstellung an seinen Erinnerungen teilhaben lassen. Die Geschichte einer weiteren Person dürfte vielen von Ihnen ein Begriff sein: Robert Capa, der spätere Begründer der Fotoagentur Magnum.     Abstract: Das Deutsche Historische Museum zeigt in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. erstmals in Deutschland einhundert Kunstwerke aus der israelischen Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem. Als Abschluss des 50-jährigen Jubiläums der deutsch-israelischen Beziehungen ist die bis heute umfangreichste Präsentation aus der Sammlung des Yad Vashem außerhalb Israels als unschätzbares Zeichen der Freundschaft zu werten. Yad Vashem in Jerusalem ist der zentrale Ort des Gedenkens an die Shoah. Zentrale Aufgaben sind die museale Präsentation der Geschichte des Holocaust und deren wissenschaftliche Dokumentation. Die überwiegend grafischen Blätter in der Ausstellung stammen von Häftlingen aus verschiedenen Konzentrationslagern, Arbeitslagern und Ghettos und sind unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen im Geheimen entstanden. Sie zeugen von der Kraft des Geistes im Angesicht von Elend und Tod und dem Widerstreit zwischen der Wirklichkeit des Holocaust und einer imaginativen Gegenwelt. In einem kompromisslosen Akt des Widerstands zeichneten und malten die Künstlerinnen und Künstler unter Lebensgefahr. Einige schilderten deutlich die Grausamkeiten und Erniedrigungen, die sie erdulden mussten, andere widersetzten sich der fortschreitenden Entmenschlichung, indem sie das Individuelle und das innere Seelenleben betonten. Von den fünfzig präsentierten Künstlerinnen und Künstlern wurden 24 von den Nationalsozialisten ermordet. Neben größtenteils unbekannten Namen sind auch bekannte Künstler wie Felix Nussbaum oder Ludwig Meidner vertreten. Die Werke sind in der Ausstellung nach Themen gegliedert, die vom Porträt über die alltägliche Grausamkeit im Lager bis zur Erschaffung einer idyllischen Gegenrealität reichen. Ergänzt werden sie durch die Biografien der Künstler, die untrennbar mit den Werken verbunden sind. Eine Kooperation der Bonner Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e. V., des Deutschen Historischen Museums und der israelischen Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem. Kuratoren sind Eliad Moreh-Rosenberg (Yad Vashem) und Walter Smerling (Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e. V.). Die Ausstellung wurde initiiert durch den Medienpartner BILD und die Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e. V. und ermöglicht durch die Förderung der Daimler AG und der Deutsche Bank AG.

    Abstract: Many types of tradition and interpretation found in later Jewish and Christian writings trace their origins to the Second Temple period, but their transmission and transformation followed different paths within the two religious communities. For example, while Christians often translated and transmitted discrete Second Temple texts, rabbinic Judaism generally preserved earlier traditions integrated into new literary frameworks. In both cases, ancient traditions were often transformed to serve new purposes but continued to bear witness to their ancient roots. Later compositions may even provide the key to clarifying obscurities in earlier texts. The contributions in this volume explore the dynamics by which earlier texts and traditions were transmitted and transformed in these later bodies of literature and their attendant cultural contexts

    Abstract: The Hebrew of the Late Second Temple Period is directly attested in the Scrolls from Qumran and other manuscripts discovered in the Judaean Desert. Indirectly, it is also found in some manuscripts copied in later times, which still preserve linguistic elements of the Hebrew from the period in which the texts were authored. Often referred to as the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls or Qumran Hebrew, and positioned chronologically between Biblical Hebrew and Mishnaic Hebrew, its nature remains disputed. Some essays in this volume deal with linguistic and philological problems of this Late Second Temple Period Hebrew. Other papers discuss the nature and linguistic profile of the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls

    Abstract: Unter dem Titel »Die schwarzen Jahre. Geschichten einer Sammlung. 1933 – 1945« sind Kunstwerke der Nationalgalerie, die entweder in diesem Zeitraum entstanden, damals in die Sammlung kamen oder aber durch die Nationalsozialisten beschlagnahmt wurden versammelt und umfangreich kommentiert. Es geht ebenso um Hauptwerke von Pablo Picasso, Lyonel Feininger, Otto Dix, Käthe Kollwitz, Rudolf Belling oder Ernst Ludwig Kirchner wie um neu in die Sammlung gekommene Stücke sowie Arbeiten, die seit über 75 Jahren nicht mehr ausgestellt waren. Aus den Geschichten der einzelnen Objekte ergibt sich so ein vielgestaltiger Blick auf Kunst, Politik und Museumsgeschichte in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Die ausgewählten Objekte sind so unterschiedlich wie die Lebenswege der Künstler und die Schicksale ihrer Werke: hier die Propagierung als »nationale« Kunst, dort die Diffamierung als »entartet«. Künstler wurden verfolgt und zur Emigration gezwungen, manche durften nicht mehr ausstellen, andere konnten durch staatliche Aufträge ihre Karriere voranbringen. Dabei waren die Grenzen oft fließend, Entscheidungen manchmal widersprüchlich. Im Prolog wird ein Bildertausch mit dem faschistischen Italien unter Mussolini dokumentiert, durch den 1932/1933 fünfzehn Gemälde italienischer Künstler wie Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà oder Mario Sironi in die Nationalgalerie kamen. Die Ausstellung »Die schwarzen Jahre. Geschichten einer Sammlung. 1933 – 1945« findet vom 21. November 2015 bis zum 31. Juli 2016 in der »Neuen Galerie« im Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin - Museum für Gegenwart - Berlin statt. Um die Sammlung der Nationalgalerie zur Klassischen Moderne auch während der Sanierung des Mies-van-der-Rohe-Baus präsent zu halten, eröffnet im November 2015 ein eigens dafür eingerichteter Ausstellungsraum im Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin: die "Neue Galerie". Dort werden bis zur Wiedereröffnung der Neuen Nationalgalerie im halbjährlichen Rhythmus wechselnde Präsentationen zur Kunst der Moderne zu sehen sein. Die für "Die schwarzen Jahre" entwickelte Ausstellungsarchitektur ist inspiriert von der verwinkelten Raumsituation mit Wandscheiben und Durchblicken in Karl Hofers Gemälde Die schwarzen Zimmer, dessen zweite Fassung 1943 gemalt wurde.

    Abstract: In den unmittelbaren Nachkriegsjahren erschienen in den Lagern für jüdische Displaced Persons Hunderte von Büchern, überwiegend in jiddischer und hebräischer Sprache. Die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin hat es sich vor einigen Jahren zum Auftrag gemacht, diese Publikationen systematisch zu sammeln. Mit unserer Kabinettausstellung stellen wir nun erstmalig einen Teil dieser Literatur vor, die in Deutschland gedruckt wurde, sich jedoch nie an ein deutsches Publikum richtete. Ihre Leser waren unfreiwillig hier gestrandet und befanden sich, wie einer der Buchtitel dies definiert, »Im fremden Land«. In the immediate post-war years, in the camps set up for Jewish displaced persons, hundreds of books were published, mainly in Yiddish and Hebrew. The Berlin State Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz) resolved some years ago to systematically collect these publications. In our cabinet exhibition, we present for the first time a part of this literature, which was published in Germany but not initially intended for the German general public. Its readership was involuntarily stranded here and thus felt itself to be, as the title of one such book put it, "In a Foreign Country."

Bisher fehlte ein umfassender Überblick über das kreative Schaffen dieser Zeit. Mit 500 Werken von rund 200 Malern, Grafikern, Fotografen, Kunsthandwerkern und Modeschöpfern wirft die Ausstellung deshalb einen differenzierten Blick auf die Epoche der nicht immer „goldenen“ Zwanziger. Sie vermittelt ein Gefühl für den Zeitgeist dieser Ära und gibt eine Ahnung von dem Verlust, den auch die Kultur durch die Gewaltherrschaft der Nationalsozialisten erlitt.

    Abstract: Books within Books presents some recent findings and research projects on the fragments of medieval Hebrew manuscripts discovered in the bindings of other manuscripts and early printed books across Europe. This is the second collection of interdisciplinary articles on Hebrew binding fragments presenting current scholarship and its international scope. From the contemporary perspective, the fragments of medieval Hebrew manuscripts preserved until today, through their numbers (estimated 30,000 fragments, so more than double of the number of the known Hebrew volumes produced in medieval Europe ), the texts they carry (some of them have been previously unknown), the insights into book making techniques and finally their economic impact, are an unprecedented source for our knowledge of the Hebrew book culture and literacy as well as the economic and intellectual exchanges between the Jewish minority and their non-Jewish neighbours

    Abstract: Mit einer Schau zum Thema Reklame setzt das Jüdische Museum Berlin seine Serie von Ausstellungen zur Konsum- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte fort. Ausgangspunkt ist eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Reklamemarken - briefmarkengroße Bilder, die vor allem der Firmen- und Produktwerbung dienten und dem Museum von einem Privatsammler überlassen wurden. Vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg kursierten sie millionenfach und lösten ein regelrechtes "Sammelfieber" aus. Die Ausstellung nimmt das Phänomen der "Reklamemarke" unter verschiedenen Aspekten in den Blick: Sie beleuchtet ihre Genese von der Siegelmarke zum millionenfach verbreiteten Werbemittel sowie das Sammeln der Marken als kurzzeitiges Massenphänomen. Sie zeigt das breite Motivspektrum, das in den kleinen Bildern verwendet wurde - von Künstlermarken bis hin zu Marken mit explizit jüdischem Bezug. Weitere Themen sind die Herstellung der Marken und einige Branchen, in denen jüdische Unternehmer prominent vertreten waren. Heute sind die kleinen Werbemarken vielfach die einzigen visuellen Zeugnisse von florierenden Firmen und Geschäften, die nach zwei Weltkriegen und der Schoa erhalten geblieben sind. In unserer Ausstellung laden wir damit zur sinnenfreudigen Erkundung eines bunten Kapitels deutscher Konsum- und Werbegeschichte ein.

    Abstract: Hans Bayer wurde nach 1945 unter dem Namen Thaddäus Troll einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit als Literat, Journalist und schwäbischer ćDichterfürst̮ bekannt. Dass er zwischen 1941 und 1945 als Angehöriger der Propagandakompanien 689 und 670 vor allem über den Feldzug gegen die Sowjetunion berichtet hatte, verschwieg er. Die Ausstellung zeichnet Hans Bayers Kriegsstationen nach und gibt Einblick in seine Erlebnisse und die von ihm verfassten Berichte. Hans Bayer (alias Thaddäus Troll) wäre im März 2014 hundert Jahre alt geworden.

    Abstract: Angesichts häufiger Anfragen zu Recherchewegen zum Schicksal von Verfolgten des nationalsozialistischen Regimes haben die Gedenk- und Bildungsstätte Haus der Wannseekonferenz, die Koordinierungsstelle Stolpersteine Berlin und das Landesarchiv Berlin die Ausstellung „Fundstellen. Spuren von NS-Verfolgten in Berliner Archiven“ erarbeitet. Erstmals wurde die Präsentation Ende 2014 in der Gedenk und Bildungsstätte Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz gezeigt. Anhand von sechs Biografien von Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus wird hier exemplarisch gezeigt, wie und wo man heute Informationen über diese Menschen finden kann, wo eine Spurensuche Erfolg haben kann. So werden viele verschiedene Fundstellen in den zentralen Archiven der Region genannt wie die Akten der sogenannten Vermögensverwertungsstelle (Bestand Rep 36 A II des Oberfinanzpräsidenten Berlin-Brandenburg) im Brandenburgischen Landeshauptarchiv, die vielfältigen Bestände des Landesarchivs Berlin und des Bundesarchivs sowie Akten der Entschädigungsbehörde Berlin, des Jüdischen Museums und des Archivs der Gedenkstätte Sachsenhausen.

    Abstract: Heim_Spiel ist eine 2012 vom Frauenmuseum Berlin entwickelte Ausstellungsreihe, die über einen Zeitraum von mehreren Jahren in verschiedenen Berliner Bezirken realisiert wird und zu einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Themenfeld ›Heim‹ (im allerweitesten Sinne!) einlädt. Idee der Reihe ist es, jeweils den Künstlerinnen eines bestimmten Bezirks eben dort auch ein Forum zu bieten. Nach der Premiere dieser Ausstellungsreihe 2012 im Rathaus Tempelhof-Schöneberg und einer zweiten Runde 2013 in Spandau freuen wir uns sehr, mit dem dritten Heim_Spiel nach Mitte einladen zu dürfen, wo die galerie weisser elefant ihre Räume zur Verfügung stellt. Zugelassen waren nur Künstlerinnen, die in Mitte leben und/oder arbeiten, die also (zumindest temporär) in diesem Bezirk zuhause sind.     Abstract: The Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the book of Ben Sira can be properly understood only in the light of all contemporary Second Temple period sources. With this in mind, 20 experts from Israel, Europe, and the United States convened in Jerusalem in December 2008. These proceedings of the Twelfth Orion Symposium and Fifth International Symposium on the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Ben Sira examine the Hebrew of the Second Temple period as reflected primarily in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the book of Ben Sira, Late Biblical Hebrew, and Mishnaic Hebrew.     Abstract: A proper assessment of the manifold relationships that obtain between “wisdom” and “Torah” in the Second Temple Period has fascinated generations of interpreters. The essays of the present collection seek to understand this key relationship by focusing attention on specific instances of the reception of “Torah” in Wisdom literature and the shaping of Torah by wisdom. Taking the concepts of wisdom and torah in the various literary strata of the book of Deuteronomy as a point of departure, the remainder of the book examines the relationship between wisdom and Torah in Wisdom literature of the Second Temple period, including Proverbs, Qohelet, Ps 19 and 119, Baruch, Ben Sira, Wisdom, sapiential and rewritten scriptural texts from Qumran, and the Wisdom of Solomon

    Abstract: Aus Anlass des 80. Jahrestages der NS-"Machtergreifung" zeigt die Stiftung Topographie des Terrors die Sonderausstellung "Berlin 1933 - Der Weg in die Diktatur". Schlaglichtartig ruft sie in Bild- und Textdokumenten die Schlüsselstationen der Etablierung der NS-Herrschaft in den ersten sechs Monaten des "Dritten Reiches" am historischen Schauplatz Berlin auf. Sie rückt dabei auch das Schicksal der frühen Opfer des NS-Terrors in Berlin in den Blick. Die Zahl der 1933 in Deutschland von den Nationalsozialisten ermordeten politischen Gegner und anderen Opfer ist nur unzureichend erforscht. Schätzungen gehen von bis zu 600 Opfern im Reichsgebiet aus. In Berlin wurden vermutlich mindestens 100 Menschen aus politischen, "rassischen" oder anderen Gründen ermordet. Bezieht man die zahlreichen Suizide mit politischem Hintergrund ein, muss von noch deutlich mehr Opfern ausgegangen werden. In der Ausstellung bilden deshalb exemplarische Biographien und die mit knappen biographischen Angaben versehene Zusammenstellung von Namen früher NS-Terroropfer in Berlin räumlich und inhaltlich den Kern der Präsentation. Seit 22. April ist die Ausstellung in einer deutlich erweiterten Fassung im Ausstellungsgraben entlang der freigelegten Kellermauerreste an der Niederkirchnerstraße zu sehen.

    Abstract: 2007 marked the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls.     Abstract: "Ich habe geweint, als ich mein Gewehr bekam. (...) Ich war nicht mehr wehrlos. Zum ersten Mal konnte ich mich verteidigen." So wie der berühmte Schriftsteller Stefan Heym fühlten viele deutsch-jüdische Flüchtlinge, die auf der Seite der Anti-Hitler-Koalition kämpften. Sie waren in Deutschland verfolgt worden und kehrten als Befreier zurück. Unbekannte Schicksale, aber auch prominente Biographien wie die des Friedensnobelpreisträgers Henry Kissinger, des Schriftstellers Stefan Heym oder des Journalisten Ernst Cramer stehen im Fokus der Sonderausstellung. Auch die oft dramatische Flucht und der meist schwierige Neuanfang in den Aufnahmeländern kommen zur Sprache. Spätestens 1943 waren in allen alliierten Armeen deutsche Juden integriert. Sie kämpften in Nordafrika, in Sizilien oder landeten am D-Day in der Normandie. Nach dem Sieg über das nationalsozialistische Deutschland gestalteten sie in der Militärverwaltung die politische Zukunft des Landes mit und waren an der Entnazifizierung, der Reeducation und dem Aufbau eines demokratischen Rundfunk- und Pressewesens beteiligt. Manche der ehemaligen Flüchtlinge kamen in ihren vormaligen Heimatorten zum Einsatz, wo sie in Einzelfällen sogar auf ihre früheren Verfolger trafen. Besonders schrecklich war die Rückkehr für jene, die die Befreiung von Konzentrationslagern aus nächster Nähe miterlebten. Originalexponate, Fotografien und eindrückliche Zeitzeugeninterviews lassen die denkwürdigen Schicksale lebendig werden. Die Sonderausstellung veranschaulicht vierzehn bewegte und bewegende Biographien, welche die Erzählungen über Leid und Opfer deutscher Juden im Zeichen nationalsozialistischer Vernichtungspolitik ergänzen. Die Sonderausstellung ist der Beitrag des AlliiertenMuseums zum Themenjahr "Zerstörte Vielfalt. Berlin 1933-1938-1945".

    Abstract: "I wept when I got my rifle ... I wasn't defenseless anymore. For the first time, I could defend myself." Many German-Jewish refugees who fought against Nazi Germany on the side of the coalition against Hitler shared the sentiments of the famous author Stefan Heym. Persecuted in Germany, they returned as liberators. The temporary exhibition focuses on unfamiliar life stories as well as prominent biographies such as that of the Nobel Peace laureate Henry Kissinger, the writer Stefan Heym or the journalist Ernst Cramer. The often-dramatic escapes and difficulties of beginning anew in their host countries are also addressed. By 1943, German Jews had been integrated into all Allied armies. They fought in North Africa and Sicily, or landed in Normandy on D-Day. After the victory over Nazi Germany, they helped to shape the country's political future as part of the military administration and participated in denazification, reeducation, and building a democratic broadcasting system and press. Some of the former refugees were deployed in their former home regions, where in some cases they even came face to face with those who had once persecuted them. Returning was especially terrible for those who personally experienced the liberation of the concentration camps. Original objects, photos, and impressive eyewitness interviews help to bring the memorable biographies alive. The temporary exhibition illuminates fourteen turbulent and moving life stories, which supplement existing narratives of the suffering and sacrifices of German Jews in the face of Nazi extermination policy. The temporary exhibition is the Allied Museum's contribution to the Berlin Theme Year "Diversity Destroyed. Berlin, 1933 - 1938 - 1945."
