Abstract:
Examining the discussion on the Dreyfus Affair in Sholem Aleichem’s story, which was written during the period 1899-1905, states that the characters in Kasrilevke seem to accept and internalize the existence of antisemitic prejudices. Reading the reports on the Affair in their local newspaper, they reduce all the antisemites implicated in the trial to a single faceless menace, identified also with their own local antisemites. The Kasrilevke Jews’ perception of the trial represents a premonition of a still greater perplexity to come.
