Abstract:
Discusses Miller's writing in the 1960s, focusing on "Incident at Vichy, " a dramatization of the systematic roundup of Jews by the Vichy government as it submitted to the German racial laws. The story is based on a real event, when a non-Jew saved a Jew by taking his place in a physical examination. The play insists that humans are free; the Jew can resist or submit, the German can murder or rebel. Miller saw the atrocities of Nazism as part of a ubiquitous social injustice.
