Abstract:
Discusses some recent publications - Lawrence Langer's "Holocaust Testimonies" (1991), Zygmunt Bauman's "Modernity and the Holocaust" (1989), a collection edited by Carol Rittner and John K. Roth ("Memory Offended: The Auschwitz Convent Controversy, " 1991) and another edited by Antony Polonsky ("My Brother's Keeper? Recent Polish Debates on the Holocaust, " 1990) - which offer the opportunity to reassess the problems of traumatic memory and how to relate to the tragedies of the past. Focuses on the moral violations inflicted by the Holocaust, the assaults on the moral self, which point to the Holocaust as a specifically human tragedy. Pp. 46-53 discuss Polish dealings with Auschwitz and the memory of the Holocaust. States that the reconciliation of Polish and Jewish memories is still a delicate matter.
