Abstract:
Examines relations between the royal authorities and the Jews in Majorca from 1229, when the Catalans occupied the city, to 1435, when the Jews were converted en masse to Catholicism. The relations, at first benevolent, began to deteriorate in the late 13th century, when the tendency arose to separate the Jews from their Christian neighbors (e.g. in 1290 a decree was issued to enclose all the Jews of the city in a "Call"). In 1315, when two German Christians converted to Judaism, the Majorcan Jewish community was fined heavily; all its property was confiscated. In 1374 and in 1391 it was not the authorities, but the Christian population, who initiated violent pogroms. In 1435 the Jews were forcibly converted, but the Majorcan Conversos were not allowed to forget their Jewish origins.
