Abstract:
Describes the life and work of Presser (1899-1970), the Dutch Jewish writer and historian, author of the two-volume "Ondergang" (1965) on the Holocaust in the Netherlands. Presser survived the Holocaust in hiding, but his wife was deported and died. After the war he found that many Dutch people reacted with hostility to the return of Jewish survivors. In "Ondergang, " Presser accuses the Dutch government and all its agencies (police, courts, population registry office) of collaboration with the Nazis, and the great mass of ordinary citizens of standing by passively. He also describes the role of the Jewish Council which not only failed to organize resistance, but advised obedience to Nazi orders and itself compiled the lists of those to be deported. Before this, Presser had published a short novel, "The Night of the Girondists" (1957), in which he describes the Westerbork transit camp and analyzes Jewish self-hatred.
