Abstract:
In the context of considerable Jewish admiration for John Paul II and appreciation of pro-Jewish words and acts of his, Minerbi (who was the Israeli ambassador to the Holy See) proposes a deeper analysis of them which suggests ambiguity toward Jews and Judaism. Reads the 1986 encyclical "Dominum et vivificantem" as seeming to revive the charge of deicide against the Jews. Criticizes the Pope for attempting to Christianize the Holocaust, e.g. by emphasizing the "six million Poles" who perished during the war; for canonizing Edith Stein; and for unfairly criticizing Israeli policy, despite his famous official visit to Israel in March 2000. Notes the Church's failure, under John Paul II, to admit its institutional guilt for antisemitism which eventually led to the Holocaust, to condemn Mel Gibson's film, and to criticize Pius XII's unwillingness to stand up to the Nazis.
