Abstract:
Discusses Kolbe's antisemitism in the light of Polish interwar society, in which the Church, in its press and its preaching, disseminated hatred of Jews: Jews were seen as foreign to Poland, disloyal, immoral, destructive of Polish culture, and engaging in unfair economic competition. In collusion with communists and Freemasons, they aspired to domination over Poland and over the world. This was the opinion of Polish laymen as well. "Rycerz Niepokalanej, " a monthly edited by Kolbe, and "Maly Dziennik, " a popular daily founded and mentored by him, propagated these same ideas, although Kolbe tried to exclude overly aggressive articles. After the German invasion, Kolbe's monastic center aided Jewish refugees from the Wartheland, but it is impossible to say whether he repented of his former views.
