Abstract: In a polemic against Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig of 1926, Siegfried Kracauer (1889–1966) insisted that truth had come to reside in the spheres of the profane. The following article explains the theology of history underlying Kracauer’s postulate and traces its literary, political and philosophical variants in his texts and his correspondences. Prima facie, his single-minded focus on the profane seems to point to a form of negative theology. Relying on vague references to the Jewish prohibition of the image, Kracauer implies that the absolute may be identified only by critiquing profane reality. This claim notwithstanding, Kracauer repeatedly points to positive motifs too. His notion of Jewishness as the particularist embodiment of a universal form of reason and his references to hedonistic and aesthetic experiences that embody the Messianic are cases in point. While the latter tended ultimately to reflect Buber’s concept of Hasidism, Kracauer explicated this approach in his treatment of (actually or supposedly) Jewish artists such as Franz Kafka, Jacques Offenbach and Charlie Chaplin. Kracauer’s canonization of these figures as nonconformists bears a notable resemblance to Isaac Deutscher’s concept of the “non-Jewish Jew” and Hannah Arendt’s notion of the “Jew as pariah”.

Abstract: This paper discusses Franz Rosenzweig’s use of the term “the unconscious” (das Unbewußte) and possible influences on his understanding of it. I claim that for Rosenzweig, it is through the unconscious that the individual becomes aware of himself and becomes capable of fulfilling his longing to achieve self-fulfillment and eventually to take part in a collective redemption. The unconscious is often perceived as the mental sphere related to trauma and repression in which defense mechanisms and fantasies are evolved. Fantasies are psychological tools that allow the individual to cope with trauma, but they are also “layers of enclosedness,” illusions that should be dissolved. Hence, in the unconscious, we find a possibility of liberation.

Abstract: “Post-traditional” Jewishness—a distinctively modern condition wherein past sources of theological authority and religious normativity are no longer self-evident—has been one of the most abiding interests in Paul Mendes-Flohr’s writings for more than four decades. The present article traces the contours of this concern over time. In a number of publications between 1978 and 1987, Mendes-Flohr highlights “secular religiosity” as a manifestation of post-traditional Jewishness, exemplified by figures such as Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig. These early writings intimate the possibility of a critical and yet nonetheless integrated Jewish religious subject, grounded hermeneutically in Jewish sources and sociologically in the Jewish community of destiny (Schicksalsgemeinschaft). Starting in the late 1980s, however, Mendes-Flohr’s representations of post-traditional Jewishness begin to emphasize greater degrees of complexity and, indeed, fragmentation. These later writings gesture less to visions of secular religiosity than toward postures of “undogmatic, pluralistic, and open” self-reflectivity before the ever-changing faces of reality. Throughout this rich trajectory in Mendes-Flohr’s thought, though, we see that he returns continually—and ever more trenchantly—to dialogical life as a grounding principle. View Full-Text

Abstract: Interwar Europe saw a deep yearning for eternity among Jewish and Christian thinkers. This yearning also included a renewed attention to the difficult concepts of immortality and resurrection, which took on moral meaning akin to repentance and repair. Beginning with Karl Löwith’s famous critique of Heidegger’s Being and Time through Rosenzweig’s eternity philosophy, this essay reads the Star of Redemption in concert with the writings of Max Scheler, Hermann Cohen, Leo Baeck, Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy, Martin Buber, and Ernst Cassirer, situating Rosenzweig’s work within an interwar “eternalism,” in which eternity appeared as a worldly concept resisting historical pessimism and the politics of fate. As such, the concept of eternity functioned less as a flight from history and worldly politics than as a conscious critique of historical time and the power of finitude. This restores meaning to Löwith’s assertion that politics as an endeavor of humanity needs the horizon of eternity, while the same horizon of eternity, for Cohen and Rosenzweig, offered also a vision of perpetual peace.

Abstract: Gustav Landauer (1870–1919) was a German-Jewish anarchist and radical thinker who was brutally murdered in the Munich Soviet Republic. Paul Mendes-Flohr has contributed enormously to the rediscovery of this long-neglected figure, who nonetheless played a crucial role in the intellectual debates of his time. Mendes-Flohr emphasizes the impact that Landauer’s death had on Martin Buber’s conception of politics at a time when Jewish revolutionaries were attempting to combine messianism and activism. In this essay, as a complement to Mendes-Flohr’s insightful work, I will attempt to show how Landauer’s legacy can be traced in two other German-Jewish thinkers, Franz Rosenzweig and Walter Benjamin, albeit with important differences. In particular, I want to illustrate how Landauer’s idea of an anarchic diaspora, as well as his idea of revolution as interruption, both based on a unique conception of time, can be seen as two powerful theologico-political devices that he used in order to dismantle a too narrow and too technical idea of politics. I will, therefore, examine how the anarchic diaspora finds its echo in Rosenzweig’s thought, and how the idea of interruption and inversion can be found in Benjamin’s conception of revolution. Abstract: This article reexamines the often-discussed critique of Islam in Der Stern der Erlösung (1921), the philosophical main work of German-Jewish philosopher Franz Rosenzweig (1886–1929). Through a close reading of the works on Islam mentioned in a recently published edition of his library catalog, it becomes clear, on the one hand, that Rosenzweig had access to a wide range of works, covering many of the themes that would later appear in his comments on Islam in Stern, but that his own views, on the other hand, often differ from those of the authors he consulted.

Abstract: This article presents Franz Rosenzweig’s concept of redemption as a vehicle for raising some important questions for confronting the contemporary movement of Transhumanism. The upshot of our discussion is located in the existential questions asked, following a philosophical comparison of Rosenzweig’s religious and philosophical commitment to human life in its most robust form, with Transhumanism’s scientistic vision. To do so, the article first discusses some techno-scientistic assumptions of Transhumanism, showing that it presumes what was once a core principle of German Idealism, the identity of reason and being, against which Rosenzweig rebelled. Then, the article turns to examine Rosenzweig’s humanistic redemptive vision and its emphasis on the corporeal, the temporal, and the worldly (rather than the purely spiritual, the apocalyptic, and the other-worldly). The conclusion makes explicit the ways in which Rosenzweig’s redemptive vision provides a contrasting model to the one set forth by Transhumanism.

Abstract: This article explores the significance of Judah Halevi's Kuzari – the classic work of particularism and ethnocentrism in medieval Jewish philosophy – for the German-Jewish philosopher Franz Rosenzweig. Specifically, it argues that Rosenzweig's conception of the corresponding messianic tasks of Judaism and Christianity in the final section of The Star of Redemption was based on an idiosyncratic interpretation of Halevi's parable of the seed (Kuzari 4.23). By interpreting Rosenzweig's writings against the backdrop of his affinity for the Kuzari, this study clarifies some of the most vexing and contested elements of Rosenzweig's philosophy of Judaism. In particular, it provides a new interpretation of his provocative and much-discussed characterization of the Jewish people as a »blood-community« and argues that The Star, far from affirming the truth and equal standing of Christianity alongside Judaism, offers a radical vision of Judaism's superiority over it.

Abstract: At first glance, it seems obvious that the secret with which Franz Rosenzweig is occupied in his 1928 essay “Secret of the Form of Biblical Narratives” is the inexplicit form through which the Bible transmits the meaning of its narratives. But the claim put forward in this article is that the role of intertextual allusions in determining the Bible’s meaning—concealed from those not privy to this literary device—is neither the only nor the most consequential secret to which Rosenzweig wishes to draw his readers’ attention in his essay. The more far-reaching secret Rosenzweig seeks to convey involves the redemptive role readers of the Bible are intended to play when they bring their respective acts of biblical interpretation into conversation with one another.

Abstract: The essay explores Rosenzweig’s realist ontology in the Metalogic section of the Star of Redemption and brings it into conversation with Stanley Cavell’s realist ontology of film. In each thinker’s realist ontology, the world is thought of as replete with possibilities of being viewed from infinitely many separated but interlocking perspectives. Each thinker places this realist ontology in service of profoundly different aesthetic theories. For Rosenzweig, classical tragedy stages a world where the human is thrown back upon herself and unable to share the world with others. He claims that there is no way for the tragic self to return to the world except through a divine revelation of love that breaks into the closed self and awakens a loving response. Cavell, however, argues that film is the unique modern art form in which classical tragedy and the experience of revelation are combined, where the spectator is separated from the world and also made aware of the possibility of renewing her connection to the world through a loving response that Cavell describes as the “acknowledgment” of the radical otherness of each person.

Abstract: We might suggest two possible ways of understanding our question: Can God be redeemed? and: Must God be redeemed? In both cases the question sounds blasphemous. But following the movement that Franz Rosenzweig develops in The Star of Redemption, I suggest that the living relation initiated by God, as God created the world and as God revealed himself to the human being, would be an abstract construction if, on the one hand, the human being and the world did not need each other in order to become what they are and what they could be, and if, on the other hand, God was not implicated in this mutual relationship.

Abstract: In this article, I test out Hans Blumenberg’s understanding of consolation as a pattern to interpret Rosenzweig’s “new thinking.” Drawing on Blumenberg’s philosophical anthropology, I explore the connection between the concept of redemption as consolation and the image of the human being that it presupposes. I further examine the function of consolation in concepts and non-conceptual images through a comparison of redemptive consolation in the respective thought of Luther and Rosenzweig.

Abstract: In this article I claim there is no contradiction involved in Franz Rosenzweig’s love of life and his apology for death: what he loves and wants us to love is the finite life, life offered in its finitude which should in the end appear as enough – that is, sufficient and fit for everything we could want from life, redemption included. The beyond toward which death as the end gestures is not a promise of immortality, offering a transcendence in temporal terms infinitely prolonged. The will “to stay, to live,” of which Rosenzweig speaks in the opening paragraph of The Star of Redemption, is the drive characteristic of another finitude: desiring and investing in life, without, at the same time, wishing to prolong itself into infinity.

Abstract: Despite Franz Rosenzweig’s unequivocal condemnation of Gershom Scholem, his own view of the world and the possibility of human redemption therein is in some respect very close to the nihilistic sensibility and its gnostic underpinning. Although Rosenzweig obviously did not consider himself either a nihilist or a gnostic, the latter term can well be applied even to Rosenzweig’s mature speculation in The Star of Redemption and other writings from the 1920s. In spite of his initial rejection of negative theology in the Star, the swerve of Rosenzweig’s path winds its way to an apophasis of the apophasis, a turn that is encapsulated in the astounding statement, “That God is nothing becomes just as much a figurative sentence as the other one, that he is truth.”

Abstract: Rosenzweig’s pathos with respect to an ultimate redemption raises the question of the desirability of a state in which so much has to be undone in order to retain nothing but the One, the All, the Eternal, and the True. Similar doubts arise concerning Rosenzweig’s portrayal of the ways that this state of redemption is anticipated in life: through prayer, love of neighbor, the communal hymn of the We. How accessible are these to “the human being” as such? Rather than arguing against what appears as a grand remnant of the urge for totality, I invoke here two figures whose concepts of redemption partly resemble Rosenzweig’s, but depart from him in ways that make all the difference: Benjamin and Kafka.

Abstract: Although in a sense a follower of both Isaiah and Machiavelli, Rosenzweig did not share their perception of a conflict between idealism and realism in human experience. His Star of Redemption advances a theory of the redemption of the world inspired by both Isaiah and Machiavelli, and at the same time critical of both of them – a theory in which ethics and politics are strongly connected but where ethics renounces the opposition to history and historical laws, and politics renounces the opposition to ethical ideas.

Abstract: Rosenzweig’s account of Islamic universalism might lead us to question the extent of that universalism itself. In the context of Islam, it is widely understood that the possibility of redemption is available to “righteous” believers. But what about the world as a whole, the world beyond the realm of righteous believers? These questions have not elicited straightforward responses, as Muslim theologians have long debated the question of who exactly can be saved and admitted into paradise and God’s mercy. In the present essay, I consider certain influential Muslim theological approaches to the topic of world redemption, or universal salvation, with a focus on Sunni thought.

Abstract: In 1921 Rosenzweig made a strong claim for the universalization of his Jewish perspective. Unlike in Weber, Rosenzweig writes, for him Judaism is not the object but the method of his research. This means that it is not only a possible particular religious perspective, but a philosophical way of thought in its own, universally accessible way. The essay discusses this remarkable self-characterization of Rosenzweig’s work in three chapters. The first explores methodological differences between philosophical systems and Rabbinic literature; the second takes a closer look at the process by which the Jewish thinker was “marked” when entering “Jena”; the third tries to make sense of the dialectics in Rosenzweig’s life and philosophy according to which Judaism changed from being a method into becoming a program.

Abstract: The article explores the meaning and role of rationalism within Rosenzweig’s definition of The Star of Redemption as a “new theological Rationalism.” A form-content dualism is presupposed in the Star as the basis for the non-identity of thinking and Being. Significantly, the scientific character of philosophy is for Rosenzweig nothing but its formality, its heterogeneity to its content. Against this background, I argue that Rosenzweig appropriates Hermann Cohen’s transcendental method, which takes rational thinking to be an analysis and a reconstruction of a problematized object — a “fact.” My content is that this method is used in the Star to reenable the thinking of Being (content) from within the metalogical world. It does so by taking Being to be a problematic object, in the notion of God as the objective ground of the world. The philosophically presupposed fact of the Star is thus not Revelation, but the notion of a redeemed world, which emerges as the content of faith. This faith in Redemption represents for Rosenzweig a precondition for Revelation. I finally claim that this is met in prayer, which is the “form where Redemption can become the content of Revelation.”

Abstract: The search for community is a central motif of Franz Rosenzweig's intellectual and educational activity. This essay aims to establish the full scope of Rosenzweig's multifaceted treatment of community and to contextualize it as part of the German völkisch and religious Gemeinschaft-discourse, so as to unravel its crucial role in his philosophy and vision of Jewish renaissance. Rosenzweig's concept of the ideal community, articulated in The Star of Redemption, has four main aspects: first, a critique of the isolated and insulated existence of the pagan man (a prototype of the modern man), and his vision of the redeemed community that revelation and redemption engender; second, the religious community of prayer; third, the Jewish blood-community and the »community of silence« nourished by the Jewish holy days; and fourth, the vision of a world-empire consisting of religious and national communities, an alternative to the nation-state. The last section of this paper examines Rosenzweig's concept of community as developed in his later works and explores his educational vision of a learning community.

Abstract: The paper delineates Rosenzweig’s theory of autonomous art against the background of his understanding of metaphysics and systematicity, which evolved around his conception of love. The first part discusses Rosenzweig’s critical understanding of traditional metaphysics and the resulting task of reconfiguring systematic philosophy. The second part reconstructs Rosenzweig’s account of creation as the threshold toward revelation and, thus, as the negative argument for ascribing love such a pivotal role within the overall project of the Star. Part three delineates Rosenzweig’s theory of love as divine calling against the background of both his non-necessitarian yet systematic philosophy and his theory of redemption. The fourth and final part further illuminates Rosenzweig’s theory of love through the juxtaposition between the divine and the artistic calling and/or between revelatory and artistic communication, simultaneously elucidating Rosenzweig’s claim that autonomous art is a necessary yet episodic stage toward religious and religion-inspired social practices.

Abstract: This article examines the fate of Franz Rosenzweig’s private library which is today part of the National Library of Tunisia. With the German-Jewish philosopher’s death in 1929, the collection passed to his son Rafael, who fled Germany for Palestine in 1939. The library with about 3,000 volumes was to follow him, but the cargo ship was diverted to Tunis during the Second World War. The article sheds light on the context of the collection’s origin and significance in the life of Franz Rosenzweig and his environment, the odyssey of the books to Tunisia and the aftermath of the collection until today.

Abstract: The place of interfaith dialogue in Orthodox Judaism has been the subject of extensive discussion. This article offers a reading of Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik's and Rabbi Irving Greenberg's stances on interfaith dialogue that situates them in a Jewish philosophical context. Some scholars have argued that Soloveitchik's refusal to engage in Jewish-Christian theological dialogue must be understood historically; others have argued that his opposition to such dialogue must be understood halakhically. This article, building upon the view articulated by Daniel Rynhold in his 2003 article that Soloveitchik's stance on interfaith dialogue must be understood philosophically, posits that in order for Soloveitchik's stance on interfaith dialogue to be fully understood, it should be studied bearing in mind the influence of Hermann Cohen upon Soloveitchik's religious philosophy. This article, which demonstrates the direct influence of Franz Rosenzweig upon aspects of Greenberg's thought, further argues that in order for Greenberg's stance on interfaith dialogue—as well as his interfaith theology—to be completely grasped, his positions upon these theological matters must be studied with the awareness of Franz Rosenzweig's influence upon his thought. The reading offered in this article of Cohen and Soloveitchik and of Rosenzweig and Greenberg does not purport to minimize the irreconcilable differences between these thinkers; nonetheless, it believes that the substantial resemblances—and, in the case of Rosenzweig and Greenberg, the direct influence—between the views of Christianity held by these pairs of figures are significant and suggest a reconsideration of the role of philosophy in the story of American Jewish theology.

Abstract: As a student in Berlin, Franz Rosenzweig studied under the Swiss art historian Heinrich Wölfflin. This essay describes a number of convergences between Rosenzweig's and Wölfflin's thought. Rosenzweig's early view of history is indebted to Wölfflin's cyclical view of the history of style. The aesthetics of Rosenzweig's Star of Redemption unfolds within a Wölfflinian dialectic of the classic and baroque. Most significantly, Wölfflin's perceptual theory provides an interpretive key to the optical terminology of the Star. Rosenzweig's understanding of Jewish life as a mode of visual intuition (Anschauung) is read in light of Wölfflin's notion of seeing as a historically conditioned mode of perception that creatively configures the visible world. The Star employs Wölfflinian optics to differentiate between Jewish and Christian views of religious truth and to configure the knowledge of revelation.

Abstract: This article examines the three « grammatical analyses » at the heart of Franz Rosenzweig's The Star of Redemption (1921). In these fragments of exegesis associated with the study of the notions of Creation, Revelation and Redemption, Rosenzweig gives himself to a singular reading of the Hebrew Bible, which seems to obey above all a philosophical purpose. After ascertaining the guiding principles of this exegetical practice, we show how the grammatical analyses offer a variation on traditional methods of interpretation, without abandoning concern for the letter or denying fidelity to the primary meaning of the text. The relation between the philosophical subject and the sacred text then appears as a form of translation, thanks to which the « new thinking » called for by Rosenzweig finds its own language. A grammar guided by philosophical principles therefore assumes the task of preparing us to receive the testimony of the sacred text.

Abstract: This paper investigates a sibling metaphor central to Rosenzweig’s reading of the Song of Songs in The Star of Redemption, in which the lovers yearn to be united in societal fraternity. His interpretation is marked by fraternal tropes and the subsequent effacement of gender. Rosenzweig transposes the erotic energy in the Song from a celebration of difference to a longing for sameness, a move that has exegetical, philosophical, and theological implications. Ultimately, the erotic sphere of revelation is surpassed by neighborly “brotherliness” in communal redemption.

Abstract: The Wirkungsgeschichte of the well-known arable of the prodigal son has strong repercussions upon Jewish-Christian relations. Tertullian denies this application and identifies Christianity with he prodigal son only when coming from paganism. Augustine applies the prodigal son to Christianity, but tries to blame the eldest son although he is identified with Jews loyal to Gods law. The Jewish philosopher Rosenzweig derives from the same parable his conviction of separate tasks of Judaism (staying with the Father) and Christianity (coming to the Father).

Abstract: Since Emmanuel Levinas declared in Totality and Infinity (1961) that Franz Rosenzweig’s The Star of Redemption is “too often present” in his own work “to be cited,” an uninterrupted affinity between the two authors has been assumed. Nevertheless, throughout his æuvre, Levinas frequently underlines the philosophical differences marking his and Rosenzweig’s thought. In this article, I endeavor to demonstrate that the concept of redemption and salvation are wholly incompatible in Rosenzweig’s and Levinas’s philosophies. Whereas Rosenzweig pleads for a Jewish redemptive model that turns towards Judaism’s past, Levinas seeks to mobilize Judaism’s salvific potential in the name of a common human future. It is this conjunction between salvation and futurity that allows Levinas to establish a notion of the Kingdom of God that can redeem humanity from its own catastrophe after the Shoah.

Abstract: Starting with theoretical considerations on redemption in Rosenzweig’s Der Stern der Erlösung, this paper highlights the connection between redemption and choral form in Church music (e.g. in Bach’s Passions and in musical mass).Therefore, according to Rosenzweig, one can clearly distinguish between sacred/religious (geistlich) and spiritual/intellectual (geistig) music. Rosenzweig also writes about renewing Jewish worship through Bach’s vocal music, but we are given scant hints about this. “Bach in die Synagogen!” is nevertheless important, not only as an example for interreligious dialogue, but above all as an invitation to think about redemption in the postmodern condition

Abstract: Redemption in Judaism is typically thought of as an historical andeschatological category: God has redeemed Israel in the past and will do so againin the future. Although this dipolar understanding of redemption has beendominant in Judaism, forms of actualized redemption have also found expressionin which Jews, either individually or communally, secure a positive redemptivestatus in the present. This article focuses on the peculiar fact that Franz Rose-nzweig and Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik both include an actualized componentwithin their theories of redemption. After brief consideration of Kierkegaard as apotential source for their accounts of actualized redemption, I explore how actu-alized redemption fits into Rosenzweig’s and Soloveitchik’s larger thought andconsider their philosophical and theological motivations for conceiving ofredemption as achievable. In the concluding section of the paper, I critiqueRosenzweig’s and Solovetchik’s accounts of actualized redemption and suggestthat Abraham Joshua Heschel’s and Eliezer Berkovits’alternative theological an-thropologies that emphasize the cultivation of holiness circumvent some of theproblems I associate with actualized redemption.

Abstract: In the early decades of the 20th century, the concept of community (Gemeinschaft) was associated with an ideal society or polity. A host of figures conceived of redemption as the creation and development of community. In this paper, I briefly discuss how this ideal was appropriated by Martin Buber and how genuine community came to mean, for him, a society organized in terms of a collection of I-Thou oriented relationships. I then consider how the same ideal might help us to understand the social and historical ideal which Franz Rosenzweig takes to be the redemptive ideal of Judaism and the Jewish people.

Abstract: This paper explores Franz Rosenzweig's theory of repetition in The Star of Redemption and its revolutionary insight into the logic of time and eternity. The argument focuses on the role of the cycles of the weeks and the years in the temporal orientation of the Jewish people. Against previous attempts to read Rosenzweig's theory of repetition according to the mythical return of the same, I suggest that repetition constituted dialectical relations of the Jewish people with time: repetition alienated the Jewish people from history, while presenting the dynamic nature of time. I discuss Rosenzweig's radical vision of time in the context of modern philosophical works on repetition, especially Søren Kierkegaard's Repetition, to show how Rosenzweig's view of the world of becoming informs his understanding of repetition. The paper demonstrates how Rosenzweig's theory of history, in focusing on the social and liturgical dimensions of repetition, adds valuable insight into modern philosophy of repetition.

Abstract: Franz Rosenzweig's Star of Redemption culminates in an aesthetic configuration of simultaneous presences: world, man, God, creation, revelation, and redemption are viewed in a metahistorical side-by-side, connected by the "factualizing power of the And". But the idea of simultaneity, which is central to Rosenzweig's configurative thinking, belongs to the historical imagination as much as it belongs to the theological "breaking through the shackles of time". Rosenzweig's "and" belongs to both a tradition of cosmic-aesthetic historicism (Meinecke) and the philosophical reconstitution of time as a simultaneous perception. In the co-presence of all historical moments, history's hidden Gestalt, which only a people that is at once old and young can envision, connects the "and" of history with what Hegel considered history's end - its ultimate self-recognition. Eternity, then, means neither flight from, nor resistance to, history's naked fact, but the recognition of history's Gestalt as an image that "does not tolerate epochs".
