Abstract:
Critical reactions to Lyotard's book noted the tension between the author's own aims and his portrayal of "the jews", and argued that French postmodern philosophy was guilty of reducing "the Jew" to a dehistoricized and essentialized trope for "the Other". Reexamines this issue through a reading of "Heidegger and 'the jews'" that takes into account its relationship to some of Lyotard's other major works. Argues that the above-mentioned tension may in fact be a productive dynamic built into the text, a self-critical mechanism that not only derails any attempt to define, determine or represent the nature of "the Jew" but also initiates a critique of the very politics of identity that motivated much of the original reaction to Lyotard's text.
