Abstract:
The Jews of northern France were expelled in 1306; many settled in nearby countries - e.g. Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain. Queries why they did not develop a specific culture and identity of their own, as did the Ashkenazim and the Sephardim. Contends that the Jewish communities in northern France did not have strong ties with each other before the expulsion, nor did they have their own set of rites and rituals. Therefore, they integrated with the ways of the communities in the countries to which they migrated. Discusses differences in the functioning of the rabbinical authorities in northern France in comparison to the Sephardim and Ashkenazim. In Spain, southern France (largely Sephardim) and Germany the rabbis united the various communities through continuous contacts; in northern France each rabbi functioned for himself - there was no cohesive unity.
