Abstract:
The literary force of Psalm 58 is achieved through a rapid transition between images throughout the psalm. In no other psalm are there so many exuberant images compressed into so few lines. The images in the psalm are dramatic and conveyed in robust and original language. These coalesce around the figure of the wicked – from a sharp condemnation of his actions (verses 2–6) to a firm appeal for his prosecution (verses 7–12).Further division into sections has been suggested based on parallels in content and language between various parts of the psalm. However, these parallels are not consistent throughout the entirety of the structure, and their significance for understanding the psalm’s main burden is unclear. In this article, we propose a new symmetrical structure for the psalm, showing how the recurring expressions and synonyms used in the psalm lend it a consistent and systematic structure that reveals its meaning.
