Abstract:
Medieval commentary on the Bible is best studied within its historical context, in light of the multiple connections between interpretations, mentalities and religious beliefs current in contemporary contexts. Rashi’s attitude to and interpretation of geographical issues in the Bible should be investigated in greater depth. Did geographical information beyond the Bible itself and rabbinic sources influence Rashi? This article compares the cartographical information that existed in early medieval Europe with geographical aspects of Rashi’s commentary along with Rash’s maps. My conclusion is that while Rashi was influenced to an extent by geographical and cartographic knowledge prevalent in Europe in his time, for the most part, Rashi’s interpretations and maps rely on the geographical information contained in biblical verses. In addition, we note Rashi’s religious and pedagogical motivations for engaging with geographical theory of the Land of Israel, to inspire a stronger connection between the Jewish people and their ancient homeland.
